CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Education plays an essential role in human life, it brings us knowledge on the

things we need in order to survive in the contemporary world, it also helps us

understand how life goes and how we should interact with the people around us. As

time pass by, there had been many changes in how humans live and how our education

system works. In order to cope up with the endless evolution of technology and

innovation the education machine should also evolve, one key solution that the

government sees is the implementation of K-12 Curriculum. The implementation of the

K-12 program had been an issue in the Philippines, Filipino citizens, teachers, students,

young and old, employed and unemployed, had their own opinions and perspectives

with regards to this education reform.

K–12 program was introduced last 2012 by the Department of Education under

the administration of President Benigno Simeon Aquino III. This includes

institutionalizing kindergarten and introducing two more years of high school to the basic

education process. It covers kindergarten and 12 years of basic education to provide

sufficient time for mastery of concepts and skills, develop lifelong learners, and prepare

graduates for tertiary education, middle-level skills development, employment, and

entrepreneurship (Education in the Philippines, 2019).

Academic tracks may affect the student’s educational tasks as it is for senior high

school students who pursue higher and intellectual studies. Every academic strand has

a different curriculum and specialization which would either be a fulfillment or

dissatisfaction to the expectations of the students. Students are having made a firm

decision, that has chosen their desired strand as they know their strengths already

through their studies. This helps them feel less complication and feel more satisfaction

throughout college.

Senior High School, as part of the K to 12 Basic Curriculum, differs in areas of

specializations consisting of three tracks: Academic (GAS, HUMSS, STEM, ABM),

Technical-Vocational (HE, IA, ICT), and Sports and Technology. Following the shift of

the curriculum, subjects that have been taken up in Basic Education will be removed

from the College General Education curriculum and will only have fewer units

(Education in the Philippines, 2019).

Technology has played an important role in the everyday life of people. Science,

Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM) is one of the strands of the academic

track for those who are interested in pursuing a college or university education in the

fields of basic and applied sciences, biological sciences, physical sciences, laboratory

sciences, nutrition, and allied medicine, mathematics, and engineering. Senior high

school taking up this strand would have these major subjects: Pre-Calculus, Basic

Calculus, Chemistry, Biology, and Physics. According to PPerezThe STEM strand is

transdisciplinary and multidisciplinary. One of the challenges of being a STEM student

in SHS is the amount of workload and information one has to process. Science and

Math have always been considered difficult subjects, which means having a strand that

is focused on the two is difficult as well.

This study is all about the K-12 curriculum’s effectiveness among senior high

school students of the University of San Carlos Talamban Campus taking up STEM

which is measured not only by their perceptions but also by their academic excellence

and educational level of satisfaction. According to Shi, Drzymalski, Guo (2014), being in

a school with complete facilities, determined teachers, good administration services,

and a positive environment helps fulfill one 's self-satisfaction.

This study deals with the senior high school students from the University

of San Carlos Talamban Campus taking up the STEM strand strongly emphasize one’s

cognition to the level of their educational satisfaction.

Statement of the Problem

The purpose of this proposed study is to determine the k-12 curriculum's effectiveness

among senior high school students of the University of San Carlos Talamban Campus
taking up Stem. What are the strengths and weaknesses of the existing

curriculum in relation to the state of the art or best practices in education?

Purpose of the Study

The K-12 curriculum of the STEM strand was meant for senior high school

students who want to pursue higher studies. The effectiveness of their curriculum is

defined by their academic excellence as senior high school students.

The focus of this study is to gather the level of how effective is the k-12

curriculum among STEM students of the University of San Carlos Talamban Campus.

By studying the process of how the senior high school students satisfaction and the

effectiveness of the k-12 curriculum. It is hoped that we can analyze a survey of student

educational satisfaction levels with different aspects.

Significance of the Study

This study will determine the K-12 Curriculum’s Effectiveness Among Senior

High School Students of University of San Carlos Talamban Campus

Taking up STEM with the aspiration that the outcomes and evaluation be

significant to whoever it may be proven as useful for the following:

The DepEd. That they would use this study as their basis in evaluating quality

satisfaction through conducting seminars for the upcoming senior students and

teachers to define more effective in educating young learners and also for the

teacher to be knowledgeable and conscious enough on their student's

curriculum.

Educational Institutions. To prioritize the well-being of their learners by giving

them enough satisfaction in their curriculum.

Educational Distributors. To remind and help them come up to better

educational materials such as books for the senior high school STEM-strand

curriculums.

The Teachers. To be able to understand how the students feel about choosing

the academic strand, STEM, to be able to take action to their students’ needs

and to be able to understand how students learn and are satisfied with the

lessons efficiently.
The Parents. To guide their children by diminishing their weaknesses and

develop their strengths not only on their children’s academic performance but

also their contentment to their chosen academic track.

Students. For them to be provided of this conducted study, that they would use

this study’s findings in their chance to understand another fellow senior high

school students’ experiences with their STEM strand and to be satisfied with the

curriculum that helps to improve their skills and their academic performance that

would, later on, be useful to their future.

CHAPTER II
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

The K -12 Basic Education Program is the flagship program of the Department

of Education in its desire to offer a curriculum that is attuned to the 21st century. The

Enhanced K-12 Basic Education Program is a DepEd program that will improve the

standard of education and give more opportunities for graduating students (Mohammad,

2016).

According to the evaluation of the Department of Education, there is an

insufficient mastery of basic competencies due to the congested curriculum. Their

findings show that for every 100 freshmen only two are able to have a complete mastery

of what they have learned in their high school (Department of Education, 2010).

The K-12 curriculum is standards- and competence-based. It is inclusive and built

around the needs of learners and the community. The curriculum is done and is

available on the DepEd website. It is the first time in history that the entire curriculum is

digitized and made accessible to the public (Official Gazette, n.d.)

The K-12 curriculum is designed to enable graduates to join the workforce after high

school, and suitably prepare those who want to pursue higher education. The new

curriculum will also support college graduates who seek to work abroad. Developed

countries; according to the Department of Education(DepEd) briefer, view the ten years

education cycle as insufficient. (The Asianparent Philippines)

Education for students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics

(STEM) has received increasing attention over the past decade with calls both for

greater emphasis on these fields and for improvements in the quality of curricula and

instruction. In response, numerous new instructional materials, programs, and

specialized schools are emerging. While most of these initiatives address one or more

of the STEM subjects separately, there are increasing calls for emphasizing

connections between and among the subjects (Honey, Pearson, Schweingruber, 2014).

Advocates of more integrated approaches to K–12 STEM education argue that

teaching STEM in a more connected manner, especially in the context of real-world

issues, can make the STEM subjects more relevant to students and teachers. This, in

turn, can enhance motivation for learning and improve student interest, achievement,

and persistence. And these outcomes, advocates assert, will help address calls for

greater workplace and college readiness as well as increase the number of students

who consider a career in a STEM-related field (Honey, Pearson, Schweingruber, 2014).

Level of Satisfaction

A student satisfaction survey was made to collect empirical data and a factorial

experiment was designed to further analyze the interactions among different student

attributes as well as the main effects on overall satisfaction level.
