Silkworms have played an important agricultural role in supporting Japan's modernization, and

traditionally, Japan has led the world as a repository of silkworm bioresources. The silkworm is a
small and highly domesticated insect, which is ideal as a laboratory tool, although it is a
bioresource that is relatively infrequently used in experiments at present. In this review, we
describe the potential for silkworm resources to contribute to life sciences.

There is a huge importance of silkworm on the economics, and these are very much profit
making and essential for the market of garments, and cloths. It is responsible for making a huge
amount of business, by extracting silk, as a raw one, and processing it and selling it.

It is also a source of livelihood, for the people who are engaged in processing of agriculture of
silkworms.
Silkworm have a large role in rural life in many countries being an insect of economic
importance. Silkworm produces silk as high quality fiber and silk fabrics are highly attractive.
There are different lines and strains for silk production.

Importance of silk:

1. Silk is used in the preparation of garments.


2. Silk is used in the preparation of parachute cords.
3. Preparation of fishing line and elastic webs.
4. In preparation of race tyres of cars and two wheelers.
5. In insulation coils for telephone and wireless receivers.

Silkworm eggs are available year-round as they are farm raised. In the past, silkworm eggs could
only be used in classrooms in the spring or fall when live mulberry leaves, a silkworms’ main
diet, was available. Nowadays, an artificial media can be used, making raising silkworms a year-
round activity.
