What is UDL?

6
What is UDL?
Universal Design for
Learning, or UDL, is a
framework that helps
teachers plan and
deliver programmes
with all students in mind
from the outset.

7
UDL is...
▷ a teaching and learning framework based on the
understanding that students learn in diverse ways
▷ based on wide research into how the brain works and
how students learn
▷ acknowledges that some student variability can be
predicted and can be planned for in advance
▷ helps educators identify barriers and challenges to
learning and create flexible learning environments

so plan for variability.”

Engagement - hooking students in...
➢ Do students know the
purpose of their learning?
➢ Are we presenting students
with a range of options to
sustain their interests,
motivation and resilience?
➢ Are we being culturally
responsive and working
closely with the community?
➢ Where can we offer useful
choice and autonomy?

15
Representation
➢ How are we providing
access to the content of
the curriculum?
➢ What resources should
we choose and why?

16
Action and Expression

➢ How will they plan and

organise what they know?
➢ How will students
demonstrate what they
have learnt?

Personal reflection
Give a score between 1 and 10 in response to the statements below. (1 = not at all, 10 = yes completely)

1. I present information in a range of ways, 5. I offer choice to students about how they
eg through books, digital text, video, graphic present their work / understandings eg write an
organisers, speeches, drama and images. essay, make a video, use a graphic organiser,
draw a picture or give a speech.

2. When planning a lesson/ unit, I consider 6. I allow students to choose whether to work
potential barriers to learning and how they independently or in groups.
can be removed or minimised.

3. I take my time to know my learners (what 7. I investigate and use a range of digital tools
interests them, how they learn best, what and software to remove barriers and assist
they find difficult). students’ learning.

4. I use visuals frequently, for example, to

communicate the class timetable or to give

instructions.

UDL principle into a
current unit of work.
