Overview
Together, we’ll be reading and discussing a number of works of literature, along with
supplementary materials including essays and articles. We’ll also be honing our writing skills,
working to better organize our thoughts and express them clearly in written form.

Class Structure and Materials

We will meet for 8 hours each week, with 5 of these hours focused on your reading
comprehension and analysis skills and 3 hours devoted specifically to your composition skills.

You need to bring 2 notebooks to class--one for notes, and one for written work. If you don’t
bring these notebooks, you will lose points for both participation and homework.

You also need to bring your kindles to class each day. Take good care of your kindles. I will be
checking to make sure you are bringing your own kindle to class, and that it is in good condition.

Over the course of the year, will be reading and discussing the following books (selection and
order subject to change):

Fahrenheit 451
The Odyssey
Nervous Conditions
Malcolm X
Of Mice and Men
Animal Farm

Grading
Your overall grade in this class will be determined by the quality of your written work, your quiz
and exam scores, and your participation in class. Reading quizzes will be scored as homework.
Below, you can see how each grading category is weighted:

Homework 15%
Participation 10%
Exams 25%
Essays25%
Journal 25%
Expectations
You are expected to arrive to class each day prepared and on time. To be prepared for class,
you need to have completed all assigned reading and homework and bring all required
materials.

Failure to arrive on time for class will result in a drop in your participation grade.

If you do not complete your assigned reading and homework for class, you will lose both
participation and homework points.

Homework assignments which are not completed and handed in on time will receive a score of
0. Essays which are not handed in on time will be docked a full letter grade (10%) for not
making the deadline, and an additional letter grade for each day they are late thereafter. If a
major essay is not handed in within 72 hours of the deadline, it will receive a grade of 0.

In our class, respect will be shown to all members of the class at all times. Be considerate to
others when they are speaking by waiting for them to finish before you offer your own thoughts.
In a large group setting, make sure to raise your hand and wait to be called on.

I should not see any phones being used in class. Any phone that makes an appearance will be
confiscated.

Cheating and Plagiarism

Academic integrity is critical to your success as a student and as a person. Any student caught
cheating on any assignment, quiz, exam or essay will receive a zero on the work in question
and have the incident recorded in their permanent disciplinary record. Consequences for
cheating may also include suspension or expulsion from school.

If you receive help on an assignment, you must indicate this on the assignment. If there is no
indication of outside help when outside help is given, all students involved will be considered as
having cheated. As an example, if one student arranges for another student to complete their
homework, both students are guilty of cheating, and both will be held accountable.

Plagiarism, which includes using others’ ideas without proper citation, is a form of cheating, and
will be dealt with accordingly. We will discuss plagiarism in greater detail in class.
