Preface (서문)
I am writing this self-study book for beginners of Korean language who are starting to learn
through the social network service. The most important aspect in learning for beginners is to
learn how to pronounce and write Hangul alphabet in a correct way. Because once beginners
get used to pronouncing and writing in a wrong way, it takes a long time to correct them.
I have met many beginners who try to read and write romanized korean to communicate with
Korean people and other learners. If you are a Korean language learner who rely on
romanization you have to remember two things. First, There is almost no romanized words in
Korean and Korean people will not understand it. Second, You cannot move on to the next level
in grammar, reading or writing with only knowing romanized korean.
Most Korean textbooks, however, spend only one or two chapters in introducing Hangul
consonants and vowels, then move on to the next topics, such as grammar, conversations
or vocabulary. It is hard to find a Korean textbook that explains the exact articulation position
and the sound value of each Hangul letter. These types of textbooks cannot be a good start
for self-studying learners.
This book is designed to help self-studying learners to focus on the pronunciation and writing
of each letter before they move on to the next level of study. The learners will learn How
Hangul Alphabet was created and how to pronounce and write each letter. Then, finally they
will learn about Korean word structures and how to read and write them in the correct way.
I decided to release this e-book for free to all Korean language learners. Each chapter has a QR
code and a URL address that links to the free Teacher Kim's video lessons, allowing learners to
increase their understanding about Hangul and improve listening and pronunciation. And at the

TEACHER KIm’s
end of each chapter, black-and-white-based writing exercises are provided so that learners can
print the pages and practice with their own handwriting.
Please understand that my English explanations may be awkward sometimes as it is my second
language. I am a foreign language learner just like you. I hope this book is a good starting point
in your journey of learning Korean.

We are ready to learn Korean Alphabet that is called Hangul.

“Who created Hangul?” and “How was Hangul created?”.

1. What is Hangeul?
First of all, We need to understand the definition of 한글(Hangul) and 한국어(Hangukeo).
한국어(Hangukeo) is the Korean language that is used in South and North Korea and some provinces
in China. They can understand each other but the accents and intonations are a bit different.

한글 (Hangul) is an Alphabet that Korean people use. There are many Alphabets around the world
like Roman, Greek or Arab Alphabets. All the Alphabets have consonants and vowels. Hangul has
21 vowels and 19 consonants.

Unique Writing
Writing Hangul Characters are different to English ones. English words are written by
ordering the alphabet from left to right. But when we write 한글(Hangeul) we put consonants

and a vowel in one character and words are made by putting these characters together.

Pic 2 - Hello in Hangeul

Sound letters
한글 is sound letters like english. That means each alphabet doesn’t have any meaning but
just a sound. We don’t write 한글 making meaning but expressing the sound. We can express
more than 50,000 sounds with combination of Hangul Alphabet.

2. Who created 한글?

한글 is the only alphabet that the creator is known. 한글 was made by King 세종(Sejong) and
his scholars in 1443. Before 한글 was created, Korean People talked to each other in Korean
but they used Chinese characters for writing which was not suitable. So King 세종(Sejong)
wanted to help his people and decided to create Native Korean Characters that is called
훈민정음(Hun min jeong eum). Now we call it 한글(Hangeul).

6
Pic 3 - King Sejong statue Pic 4 - 훈민정음 해례본(Hangeul Manual)

3. How was Hangul(한글) created?

The Hangul(한글) was created philosophically and scientifically.

Three symbols (ㅣ ㅡ . ) for making Vowels

According to the Korean origins, there are three important elements in the universe : that

TEACHER KIm’s
is Sky, the Earth and human. King 세종 used these symbols in making the Korean vowels.
He used a little Dot to symbolize ‘sky’, the horizontal line for earth and vertical line for
human. All 한글(Hangul) vowels consist of a combination of these three symbols.

2 prop consonants rules
1. As you see the 3rd and 4th Korean consonant structures, the position of the prop consonant is
always at the bottom.

2. There are only 7 prop consonant sounds. That means when some consonants are used as prop
consonants.

Let’s learn each prop consonant.

1. ㄴ
Attach the tip of the tongue to the gum behind
the upper teeth and keep your tongue shape and
release air through the nose only.
The sound of the prop consonant ‘ㄴ’ is the same as
the final ‘n’ sound of the english word ‘noon’.
