Improving the 10th Grade Students’ Reading Comprehension

Achievement by Using Listen – Read – Discuss (L - R – D) Strategy
At SMAN 1 GENTENG

CHAPTER 1
Introduction

1.1 THE RESEARCH BACKGROUND

Although many students can read, reading and reading comprehension are two
different things. While reading involves translating and decoding text into sounds and
spoken words, reading comprehension involves taking what was just read and
deriving meaning from those words. In simpler terms, reading comprehension is the
ability to read, understand, process, and recall what was just read. Having excellent
reading comprehension skills is crucial. It increases the enjoyment and effectiveness
of reading and helps not only academically, but professionally, and in a person's
personal life. Imagine being given a document by your boss. You can read the
document, but you cannot understand what it is fully asking, or maybe you are
applying to jobs and do not understand a question that is being asked. Being able to
understand the meaning behind the text helps children develop intellectually, socially,
and professionally. In a school environment, it is crucial children have excellent
comprehension skills. As mentioned earlier, reading comprehension is used in other
subjects such as science, math, and history.

According to the English teacher at SMAN 1 GENTENG, the students’

reading comprehension are still low, Because most of the student does not have a
interest in reading a text, plus if the text is use English as the language the difficulties
will increase, so this problem will make problem for teacher because in learning
English reading comprehension is the very important ability that must be mastered by
the students.

Based on that problem the teacher must find some another alternative way to
attract the student’s reading interest, the teacher can use the strategy called Listen-
Read-Discuss (L-R-D) this strategy is quite unique because before do the reading
activity first the teacher will deliver some lecture of certain interesting topic so the
student will be attracted and they will show the interest to listen and then teacher will
give the text that similar to the topic and they will read it and for the last step after
they read the text they will discuss the topic in small group and discuss the text that
they have read before in this section student can stimulate their reading
comprehension through discus the topic they can show the main idea, the purpose of
the text and many aspects that can improve their reading comprehension.
Without comprehension, reading is a frustrating, pointless exercise in word
calling. It is no exaggeration to say that how well students develop the ability to
comprehend what they read has a profound effect on their entire lives. A major goal
of reading comprehension instruction, therefore, is to help students develop the
knowledge, skills, and experiences they must have if they are to become competent
and enthusiastic readers. Based on the background described above the research is
interested in conducting a CAR, entitled “Improving the 10th Grade Students’ Reading
Comprehension Achievement by Using Listen – Read – Discuss (L - R – D) Strategy
at SMAN 1 GENTENG”.

– Read- Discuss (L-R-D) Strategy at SMAN 1 GENTENG.

1.3.2 To improve the students’ reading comprehension achievement by using Listen – Read
– Discuss (L-R-D) Strategy at SMAN 1 GENTENG.

1.4 THE RESEARCH CONTRIBUTION

1.4.1 Practical Contribution.

- For the English teacher : Explain the contribution as input or inform, to apply
Listen-Read-Discuss (L-R-D) Strategy in the teaching of English to improve the
students’ Reading comprehension achievement.

- Other Researcher : A reference to conduct a further research with the

same design dealing with the similar problem to improve reading comprehension
achievement by using Listen – Read – Discuss (L-R-D) Strategy or different
design such as the experimental research with different participants & different
school.

1.4.2 Empirical Contribution.

- The action given to the students will be useful for them to give the experiences in
learning English by using Listen-Read-Discuss (L-R-D) Strategy to improve their
Reading comprehension achievement.
