Theme/ Brief:

1. As given in the brief there are two categories MICRO and MACRO. Should the teams work on both
micro and macro (or) choosing one from micro and macro is enough?

Working on both micro and macro is compulsory for a complete submission

For further details please visit our website and download the brief:

http://ethosindia.in/events/igbc/index.php

2. What is the criteria for site selection?

You are supposed to select an informal/slum/basti kind of settlement in a city that you are familiar
with. Typically such a settlement would have a poor living standard, inadequate services and housing
the urban poor.

You are supposed to select two sites. As mentioned in the brief both Micro and Macro interventions
are needed for submission:

A. Micro: Community Intervention: Add to the Commons

Site of not more than 200 sq.m

B. Macro: Housing Design

Identify a residential area of 50-150 households. You can demarcate the area accordingly, mentioning
the number of households and area coverage in your sheets.

3. Can we choose a village as the site?

A rural setting will not qualify. But if the selected settlement is an urban village that is unorganised
and qualifies under the PMAY scheme, it can be taken.

Applicability of PMAY is a must.

4. Can we propose both the interventions on the same site?

The two interventions needed are of different nature: one is residential and the other is related to
community. They can be within the same settlement for sure. If your site is big enough to propose
both the interventions together and fulfills all mentioned requirements, you can do so.

5. What aspect of PMAY should we pick for 500 words critique? Should it be on what
we study under PMAY that is insitu rehabilitation or on the entire PMAY scheme and policies?

You may identify any part or aspect of the PMAY policy and examine its repercussions in
implementation of slum-dwellers rehabilitation

6. The adaptive spaces should be considered for anganwadi or something else also?

The community spaces can be for any public function that is a pressing issue for the community.
Anganwadi, Healthcare Centre, Night School, Vocational Training Centre are all examples of the kinds
of interventions possible.

7. Is a detailed BOQ expected as part of the submission? Or the mentioned figure of 2 lakh is an
approximate value to consider?

A detailed BOQ is not expected. But the design and concept presented should be such that it seems
feasible to execute in more or less Rs. 2 lakhs budget.

8. Do we need to include the ‘community intervention' design in the 'Housing design' part or it is a
separate design?

For the Macro part- your site cannot be more than 200 sq.m and should focus on one core public
function. If you are designing the space for more than one function/usage, that is fine as long as you
stick to area and cost constraints mentioned in the brief.

For the Micro part- You are free to decide the number of/need for community spaces along with the
housing.

9. The site we have chosen is not directly a slum, but comes under a special isolated category which
is a listed site and qualifies the 4th component of my city’s PMAY scheme. Can we proceed with the
site?

If the site qualifies as urban and under PMAY you are more than welcome to select the same. Kindly
add a reference to the relevant PMAY document in your submission for the jury's reference.

10. Can incremental space grow upward only or can it be done horizontal also?

There are no restrictions on the design for incrementality. Please choose whatever option is most
suitable to your site and community, with the given constraints of land area, revenue etc.

11. What if we want to design for people who don't fall under any specific category
of PMAY or those who don't need typical family houses?

Applicability of PMAY is a must when you are choosing your site. Identify the category of users it is
closest to in the relevant PMAY policy document. If you decide to not design typical family houses,
you should be able to justify your decisions in the sheets.

12. What are the minimum sizes of the different spaces of a dwelling unit?

Please refer the guidelines under the National Building code of India which sets out the standard space
requirements of various parts of a building and those of light and ventilation.
