Habi
Habi Footwear's story begins in 2012, in an urban poor

involvement through 100% Filipino-made, environment-

industry under Sosyal Revolution, Inc., managed by three
social entrepreneurs, Janine Chiong, Paola Savillo, and
Bernadee Uy.
Company Profile

President and CEO and Head of Sales & Marketing for
Habi Footwear. Prior to reestablishing Habi after
university, she briefly worked as a Marketing
Assistant in GlaxoSmithKline Philippines, and in her
time in university was President of Musmos, a sector-
based organization that works with empowering the
urban poor youth.

Janine Mikaella Chiong

Social Entrepreneurs
Her love for our less fortunate brothers and sisters was
what led her to pursue the Social Entrepreneurship
track for her business thesis, which led to her journey
with Habi Footwear. She holds a Bachelor of Science in
Management from the Ateneo de Manila University,
and besides Habi is into financial investments through
insurance, stocks, and foreign currency. Outside of
work, she likes traveling, cooking and baking, writing,
photography, biking, and yoga.

Janine Mikaella Chiong

Social Entrepreneurs
Heads Finance and Community Development for Habi
Footwear. Like Nin, Berns was heavily involved in
social development since her school days, having
served as Executive Vice-President of Alay ni Ignacio
(ANI), which offers academic and leadership programs
to deserving public high school students with the aim
of enabling access to higher education and developing
grassroots leaders. After university, she took on a full-
time job at Accenture Philippines, consulting for
organizations such as ABS-CBN and Gawad Kalinga.

Bernadee Uy
Social Entrepreneurs
She also worked as Social Enterprise Manager at the
British Council of Manila and took a part-time teaching
post at her alma mater, the Ateneo de Manila
University (which also conferred on her a Bachelor of
Science in Management). At present, she is part of the
team that handles sales operations and program
management in PayMaya, the digital financial unit of
Smart Communications. Berns enjoys writing,
traveling, scuba diving and reading.

Bernadee Uy

apt position given that during Habi’s thesis days, it was
she who had had the idea of turning woven cloth into
shoes. Creativity is Paola’s strong suit, which also
reflects in her interest in digital marketing - her first
job was as a marketing officer at SM’s malls division,
where she was also a powerful force in the digital
development of its Shopmag; currently, she is
Associate Marketing Manager at Plains & Prints.

Maria Paulina Savillo

Social Entrepreneurs
Her other talents and passions were also evident in her
university days, when she headed the choir of her
home organization, the Ateneo MACA (Management
in Applied Chemistry Association - hence her Bachelor
of Science in said course), and also represented the
country for World Youth Day 2008 on behalf of Opus
Dei, where she is also an active member to this day.
Besides digital marketing and designing, she also likes
exercising and staying fit.

Akaba
Our company is built around the principle of
“bayanihan.” Simply put, our success and growth
go hand-in-hand with the improvement of the
lives of our weavers. Our commitment towards
our social impact is geared for sustainable
change through long-term engagements.

Company Profile
Bridging cultural heritage with urban sensibilities
is done by understanding the values and
experiences shared by our weavers and
customers. Together, we weave a story of hard
work and resilience, and create a product
that truly represents what it is to be Filipino.

Company Profile
Vision
AKABA Ltd. Design Co. is envisioned to
be at the forefront in the movement to
create global Filipino brands that do not
leave the poor behind. Joining us in
achieving this vision is GKonomics, a
social enterprise development
platform of Gawad Kalinga, and HABI:
The Philippine Textile Council.
Mission
Our company was founded in 2014 to provide
an avenue for designers and local artisans to
collaborate in the creation of timeless, high
quality and high value travel bags. Each piece
is designed to highlight the beauty and
practical use of handwoven textiles, and the
Filipino values of dedicated craftsmanship
and hard work. Beyond the local market, our
goal is to showcase the best of the Philippines
to the rest of the world.
Social Problems Addressed by Akaba
Akaba answers two main social problems
here in the Philippines: The
preservation of indigenous Philippine
culture and fair trade amongst employed
artisans. Akaba hopes to empower
Philippine innovation and promote the
craftsmanship of local artisans by
bringing local textiles, fabrics, and
design into the contemporary market.
Business Model
AKABA’s business model/policy is simple: if the
material exists locally, they will get it locally.
They have decided to source all their leather
from small, subsistence farmers in the
Philippines instead. For them, the essence of
their business is to promote Filipino innovation,
and encouraging the local economy is a priority.
AKABA works with the artisans from their
partner communities to hand make the bags
using traditional weaving techniques.

farmers. They believe in giving real dairy nourishment for all, helping create

Company Profile
Social Entrepreneur
She is a corporate-woman-turned-social-
entrepreneur who partners with farmers
in the Gawad Kalinga Enchanted Farm
(GKEF) and the nearby community to
create dairy products from carabao milk.
Her past experience in the corporate
world left her questioning her personal
role in society. She knew she had to do
something to help address social
problems.

Erika Valerie Ng Wong

Social Entrepreneur
That was also when she discovered the
Social Business Summit in GKEF, which
talked about how a new breed of
businesses called social enterprises.
Through GKEF, she thought of making
dairy products out of carabao’s milk since
she discovered that the carabao’s milk has
richer nutrients compared to cow’s milk.

Erika Valerie Ng Wong

Social Entrepreneur
With the help of local farmers who are
familiar with the carabao’s milk, she
wanted to use it as the main ingredient of
her business with a vision of being the
supplier and processor of carabao milk.
From there, she eventually created a
full line of dairy products.
