Habi
Habi Footwear's story begins in 2012, in an urban poor
community in Quezon City. Janine Mikaella Chiong, the
company's president and co-founder was on an
immersion trip and had spent considerable time with the
mothers of the community.
Company Profile
Habi promotes responsible fashion, Pinoy pride and social
involvement through 100% Filipino-made, environment-
friendly lifestyle accessories. Since 2011, its wide range of
products competes in the ethical fashion and lifestyle
industry under Sosyal Revolution, Inc., managed by three
social entrepreneurs, Janine Chiong, Paola Savillo, and
Bernadee Uy.

President and CEO and Head of Sales & Marketing for
Habi Footwear. Prior to reestablishing Habi after

urban poor youth.
Bernadee Uy

She also worked as Social Enterprise Manager at the
British Council of Manila and took a part-time teaching
post at her alma mater, the Ateneo de Manila
University (which also conferred on her a Bachelor of
Science in Management). At present, she is part of the
team that handles sales operations and program
management in PayMaya, the digital financial unit of
Smart Communications. Berns enjoys writing,
traveling, scuba diving and reading.
Bernadee Uy
Social Entrepreneurs
Heads Product Development for Habi Footwear - an
apt position given that during Habi’s thesis days, it was
she who had had the idea of turning woven cloth into
shoes. Creativity is Paola’s strong suit, which also
reflects in her interest in digital marketing - her first
job was as a marketing officer at SM’s malls division,
where she was also a powerful force in the digital
development of its Shopmag; currently, she is
Associate Marketing Manager at Plains & Prints.

Vision
AKABA Ltd. Design Co. is envisioned to
be at the forefront in the movement to
create global Filipino brands that do not
leave the poor behind. Joining us in
achieving this vision is GKonomics, a
social enterprise development
platform of Gawad Kalinga, and HABI:
The Philippine Textile Council.
Mission
Our company was founded in 2014 to provide
an avenue for designers and local artisans to
collaborate in the creation of timeless, high
quality and high value travel bags. Each piece
is designed to highlight the beauty and
practical use of handwoven textiles, and the
Filipino values of dedicated craftsmanship
and hard work. Beyond the local market, our
goal is to showcase the best of the Philippines
to the rest of the world.
Social Problems Addressed by Akaba
Akaba answers two main social problems
here in the Philippines: The
preservation of indigenous Philippine
culture and fair trade amongst employed
artisans. Akaba hopes to empower
Philippine innovation and promote the
craftsmanship of local artisans by
bringing local textiles, fabrics, and
design into the contemporary market.
Business Model
AKABA’s business model/policy is simple: if the
material exists locally, they will get it locally.
They have decided to source all their leather
from small, subsistence farmers in the
Philippines instead. For them, the essence of
their business is to promote Filipino innovation,
and encouraging the local economy is a priority.
AKABA works with the artisans from their
partner communities to hand make the bags
using traditional weaving techniques.
