ਇਹ ਪਰਤੀਤਤ ਗੋਤ ਿੰ ਦ ਕੀ ਜਤਪ ਹਤਰ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
This faith in the Lord of the Universe, and peace, are found by
meditating on the Lord.
ਅਤਿਕ ਬਾਤਾ ਸਤਿ ਕਤਰ ਰਹੇ ਗੁਰੁ ਘਤਰ ਲੈ ਆਇਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Everyone is speaking in various ways, but the Guru has brought the
Lord into the home of my self. ||1||Pause||
ਤ ਣੁ ਸਤਤਗੁਰ ਪਰਤੀਤਤ ਿ ਆ ਈ ਿਾਤਿ ਿ ਲਾਗੋ ਿਾਉ ॥
Without the True Guru, faith does not come, and love for the Naam is
not embraced.
ਸੁਪਿੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਿ ਪਾ ਈ ਦੁਖ ਿਤਹ ਸ ੈ ਸਿਾਇ ॥੨॥
Even in dreams, they find no peace; they sleep immersed in pain. ||2||
We lack faith because of our ego.
ਤਕਤੁ ਤਕਤੁ ਤਬਤਿ ਜਗੁ ਉਪਜੈ ਪੁਰਖਾ ਤਕਤੁ ਤਕਤੁ ਦੁਤਖ ਤਬਿਤਸ ਜਾਈ ॥
How, in what way, was the world formed, O man? And what disaster will end it?
ਹਉਿੈ ਤ ਤਿ ਜਗੁ ਉਪਜੈ ਪੁਰਖਾ ਿਾਤਿ ਤ ਸਤਰਐ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਈ ॥
In egotism, the world was formed, O man; forgetting the Naam, it suffers and dies.
ਗੁਰਿੁਤਖ ਹੋ ੈ ਸੁ ਤਗਆਿੁ ਤਤੁ ਬੀਿਾਰੈ ਹਉਿੈ ਸਬਤਦ ਜਲਾਏ ॥
One who becomes Gurmukh contemplates the essence of spiritual wisdom;
through the Shabad, he burns away his egotism.
ਤਿੁ ਿਿੁ ਤਿਰਿਲੁ ਤਿਰਿਲ ਬਾਣੀ ਸਾਿੈ ਰਹੈ ਸਿਾਏ ॥
His body and mind become immaculate, through the Immaculate Bani of the Word.
He remains absorbed in Truth.
ਿਾਿੇ ਿਾਤਿ ਰਹੈ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ਸਾਿੁ ਰਤਖਆ ਉਤਰ ਿਾਰੇ ॥
Through the Naam, the Name of the Lord, he remains detached; he enshrines the
True Name in his heart.
ਿਾਿਕ ਤਬਿੁ ਿਾ ੈ ਜੋਗੁ ਕਦੇ ਿ ਹੋ ੈ ਦੇਖਹੁ ਤਰਦੈ ਬੀਿਾਰੇ ॥੬੮॥
O Nanak, without the Name, Yoga is never attained; reflect upon this in your heart,
and see. ||68||
Do you worship for a reward or for seva?
ਆਪਣੀ ਆਤਪ ਕਰੇ ਪਰਤੀਤਤ ਆਪੇ ਸੇ ਘਾਲੀਅਿੁ ॥
He Himself inspires us to place our faith in Him. Thus He performs His
Own Service.
ਕਹੁ ਿਾਿਕ ਿਤਿ ਿਈ ਪਰਤੀਤਤ ॥
Says Nanak, faith comes into the mind of His servant,
ਤਿਰਿਲ ਜਸੁ ਪੀ ਤਹ ਜਿ ਿੀਤਤ ॥੪॥੭੩॥੧੪੨॥
who continually drinks in the Immaculate Praises of the Lord.
||4||73||142|
The qualities of a Servant.
ਠਾਕੁਰ ਕਾ ਸੇ ਕੁ ਆਤਗਆਕਾਰੀ ॥ The servant is obedient to his Lord and Master.
ਠਾਕੁਰ ਕਾ ਸੇ ਕੁ ਸਦਾ ਪੂਜਾਰੀ ॥ The servant worships his Lord and Master forever.
ਠਾਕੁਰ ਕੇ ਸੇ ਕ ਕੈ ਿਤਿ ਪਰਤੀਤਤ ॥ The servant of the Lord Master has faith in his
mind.
ਠਾਕੁਰ ਕੇ ਸੇ ਕ ਕੀ ਤਿਰਿਲ ਰੀਤਤ ॥ The servant of the Lord Master lives a pure
lifestyle.
ਠਾਕੁਰ ਕਉ ਸੇ ਕੁ ਜਾਿੈ ਸਿੰ ਤਗ ॥ The servant of the Lord Master knows that the Lord
is with him.
ਪਰਿ ਕਾ ਸੇ ਕੁ ਿਾਿ ਕੈ ਰਿੰ ਤਗ ॥ God's servant is attuned to the Naam, the Name of
the Lord.
ਸੇ ਕ ਕਉ ਪਰਿ ਪਾਲਿਹਾਰਾ ॥ God is the Cherisher of His servant.
ਸੇ ਕ ਕੀ ਰਾਖੈ ਤਿਰਿੰ ਕਾਰਾ ॥ The Formless Lord preserves His servant.
ਸੋ ਸੇ ਕੁ ਤਜਸੁ ਦਇਆ ਪਰਿੁ ਿਾਰੈ ॥ Unto His servant, God bestows His Mercy.
ਿਾਿਕ ਸੋ ਸੇ ਕੁ ਸਾਤਸ ਸਾਤਸ ਸਿਾਰੈ ॥੩॥ O Nanak, that servant remembers Him with
each and every breath. ||3|
No other motives.
ਿਿਿੁਖਾ ਿੋ ਪਰਤੀਤਤ ਿ ਆ ੀ ਅਿੰ ਤਤਰ ਲੋ ਿ ਸੁਆਉ ॥
The self-willed manmukhs have no faith; they are filled with greed and
self-interest.
ਗੁਰਿੁਤਖ ਤਹਰਦੈ ਸਬਦੁ ਿ ਿੇਤਦਓ ਹਤਰ ਿਾਤਿ ਿ ਲਾਗਾ ਿਾਉ ॥
They are not Gurmukh - they do not understand the Word of the Shabad
in their hearts; they do not love the Naam, the Name of the Lord.
ਕੂੜ ਕਪਟ ਪਾਜੁ ਲਤਹ ਜਾਸੀ ਿਿਿੁਖ ਫੀਕਾ ਅਲਾਉ ॥੩॥
Their masks of falsehood and hypocrisy shall fall off; the self-willed
manmukhs speak with insipid words. ||3|
How devoted should you be.
ਕਰ ਤੁ ਿਲਾ ਿ ਕਰ ਟ ਤੇਰੀ ॥
I would rather be cut apart by a saw, than have You turn Your back on me.
ਲਾਗੁ ਗਲੇ ਸੁਿੁ ਤਬਿਤੀ ਿੇਰੀ ॥੧॥
Hug me close, and listen to my prayer. ||1||
ਹਉ ਾਰੀ ਿੁਖੁ ਫੇਤਰ ਤਪਆਰੇ ॥
I am a sacrifice to You - please, turn Your face to me, O Beloved Lord.
ਕਰ ਟੁ ਦੇ ਿੋ ਕਉ ਕਾਹੇ ਕਉ ਿਾਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Why have You turned Your back to me? Why have You killed me? ||1||Pause||
ਜਉ ਤਿੁ ਿੀਰਤਹ ਅਿੰ ਗੁ ਿ ਿੋਰਉ ॥
Even if You cut my body apart, I shall not pull my limbs away from You.
ਤਪਿੰ ਡੁ ਪਰੈ ਤਉ ਪਰੀਤਤ ਿ ਤੋਰਉ ॥੨॥
Even if my body falls, I shall not break my bonds of love with You. ||2||
ਹਿ ਤੁਿ ਬੀਿੁ ਿਇਓ ਿਹੀ ਕੋਈ ॥
Between You and I, there is no other.
ਤੁਿਤਹ ਸੁ ਕਿੰ ਤ ਿਾਤਰ ਹਿ ਸੋਈ ॥੩॥
You are the Husband Lord, and I am the soul-bride. ||3||
ਕਹਤੁ ਕਬੀਰੁ ਸੁਿਹੁ ਰੇ ਲੋ ਈ ॥
Says Kabeer, listen, O people:
ਅਬ ਤੁਿਰੀ ਪਰਤੀਤਤ ਿ ਹੋਈ ॥੪॥੨॥੩੫॥
now, I place no reliance in you. ||4||2||35||
Lets look at our behavior.
ਦਸ ਬਸਤੂ ਲੇ ਪਾਛੈ ਪਾ ੈ ॥ He obtains ten things, and puts them behind him;
ਏਕ ਬਸਤੁ ਕਾਰਤਿ ਤਬਖੋਤਟ ਗ ਾ ੈ ॥ for the sake of one thing withheld, he forfeits his faith.
ਏਕ ਿੀ ਿ ਦੇਇ ਦਸ ਿੀ ਤਹਤਰ ਲੇ ਇ ॥ But what if that one thing were not given, and the ten were taken away?
ਤਉ ਿੂੜਾ ਕਹੁ ਕਹਾ ਕਰੇਇ ॥ Then, what could the fool say or do?
ਤਜਸੁ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਤਸਉ ਿਾਹੀ ਿਾਰਾ ॥ Our Lord and Master cannot be moved by force.
ਤਾ ਕਉ ਕੀਜੈ ਸਦ ਿਿਸਕਾਰਾ ॥ Unto Him, bow forever in adoration.
ਜਾ ਕੈ ਿਤਿ ਲਾਗਾ ਪਰਿੁ ਿੀਠਾ ॥ That one, unto whose mind God seems sweet -
ਸਰਬ ਸੂਖ ਤਾਹੂ ਿਤਿ ੂਠਾ ॥ all pleasures come to abide in his mind.
ਤਜਸੁ ਜਿ ਅਪਿਾ ਹੁਕਿੁ ਿਿਾਇਆ ॥ One who abides by the Lord's Will,
ਸਰਬ ਥੋਕ ਿਾਿਕ ਤਤਤਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੧॥ O Nanak, obtains all things. ||1||
ਅਗਿਤ ਸਾਹੁ ਅਪਿੀ ਦੇ ਰਾਤਸ ॥ God the Banker gives endless capital to the mortal,
ਖਾਤ ਪੀਤ ਬਰਤੈ ਅਿਦ ਉਲਾਤਸ ॥ who eats, drinks and expends it with pleasure and joy.
ਅਪੁਿੀ ਅਿਾਿ ਕਛੁ ਬਹੁਤਰ ਸਾਹੁ ਲੇ ਇ ॥ If some of this capital is later taken back by the Banker,
ਅਤਗਆਿੀ ਿਤਿ ਰੋਸੁ ਕਰੇਇ ॥ the ignorant person shows his anger.
ਅਪਿੀ ਪਰਤੀਤਤ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਖੋ ੈ ॥ He himself destroys his own credibility,
ਬਹੁਤਰ ਉਸ ਕਾ ਤਬਸਵਾਸੁ ਿ ਹੋ ੈ ॥ and he shall not again be trusted.
ਤਜਸ ਕੀ ਬਸਤੁ ਤਤਸੁ ਆਗੈ ਰਾਖੈ ॥ When one offers to the Lord, that which belongs to the Lord,
ਪਰਿ ਕੀ ਆਤਗਆ ਿਾਿੈ ਿਾਥੈ ॥ and willingly abides by the Will of God's Order,
ਉਸ ਤੇ ਿਉਗੁਿ ਕਰੈ ਤਿਹਾਲੁ ॥ the Lord will make him happy four times over.
ਿਾਿਕ ਸਾਤਹਬੁ ਸਦਾ ਦਇਆਲੁ ॥੨॥ O Nanak, our Lord and Master is merciful forever. ||2||
Take advice from those who have faith.
ਪਰਥਾਇ ਸਾਖੀ ਿਹਾ ਪੁਰਖ ਬੋਲਦੇ ਸਾਝੀ ਸਗਲ ਜਹਾਿੈ ॥
Great men speak the teachings by relating them to individual
situations, but the whole world shares in them.
ਗੁਰਿੁਤਖ ਹੋਇ ਸੁ ਿਉ ਕਰੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥
One who becomes Gurmukh knows the Fear of God, and realizes his
own self.
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਜੀ ਤੁ ਿਰੈ ਤਾ ਿਿ ਹੀ ਤੇ ਿਿੁ ਿਾਿੈ ॥
If, by Guru's Grace, one remains dead while yet alive, the mind
becomes content in itself.
ਤਜਿ ਕਉ ਿਿ ਕੀ ਪਰਤੀਤਤ ਿਾਹੀ ਿਾਿਕ ਸੇ ਤਕਆ ਕਥਤਹ ਤਗਆਿੈ ॥੧॥
Those who have no faith in their own minds, O Nanak - how can they
speak of spiritual wisdom? ||1||
ਜਗਦੀਸ ਸੇ ਉ ਿੈ ਅ ਰੁ ਿ ਕਾਜਾ ॥ I serve the Lord of the Universe; I have no
other work to do.
ਅਿਤਦਿੁ ਅਿਦੁ ਹੋ ੈ ਿਤਿ ਿੇਰੈ ਗੁਰਿੁਤਖ ਿਾਗਉ ਤੇਰਾ ਿਾਿੁ ਤਿ ਾਜਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ Night
and day, my mind is in ecstasy; as Gurmukh, I beg for the bliss-giving Naam.
||1||Pause||
ਿਿ ਕੀ ਪਰਤੀਤਤ ਿਿ ਤੇ ਪਾਈ ॥ From the mind itself, mental faith is obtained.
ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਸਬਤਦ ਬੁਝਾਈ ॥ Through the Guru, I have realized the Shabad.
ਜੀ ਣ ਿਰਣੁ ਕੋ ਸਿਸਤਰ ੇਖੈ ॥ How rare is that person, who looks upon life and
death alike.
ਬਹੁਤੜ ਿ ਿਰੈ ਿਾ ਜਿੁ ਪੇਖੈ ॥੨॥ She shall never die again, and shall not have to
see the Messenger of Death. ||2|
In Serving Waheguru you will get everything.
ਤਜਸ ਕਉ ਰਾਖੈ ਤਸਰਜਿਹਾਰੁ ॥ One who is protected by the Creator Lord,
ਝਖ ਿਾਰਉ ਸਗਲ ਸਿੰ ਸਾਰੁ ॥੩॥ cannot be harmed, no matter how much the
whole world may try. ||3||
ਪਰਿ ਅਪਿੇ ਕਾ ਿਇਆ ਤਬਸਾਸੁ ॥ I place my faith in my God.
ਜੀਉ ਤਪਿੰ ਡੁ ਸਿੁ ਤਤਸ ਕੀ ਰਾਤਸ ॥ My soul and body all belong to Him.
ਿਾਿਕ ਕਉ ਉਪਜੀ ਪਰਤੀਤਤ ॥ This is the faith which inspires Nanak:
ਿਿਿੁਖ ਹਾਰ ਗੁਰਿੁਖ ਸਦ ਜੀਤਤ ॥੪॥੧੬॥੧੮॥ the self-willed manmukhs will
fail, while the Gurmukhs will always win. ||4||16||18|
