CE 512-Reinforced Concrete 2

PLATE NO.1

1. What is the difference between a non-prestressed concrete and prestressed concrete?

- Prestressed concrete is that the concrete in which internal stresses of suitable magnitude are
introduced so that the stresses resulting from the external loadings can be counteracted to a
desired degree it is done by tensioning the reinforcement. While, non-prestressed concrete the
compressive stresses are taken up by concrete and tensile stresses by steel alone.

2. What is the difference between the working stress design and strength design?
- Working stress design is a method in which the reinforced concrete are assumed to be within
the elastic limits, where stresses are proportional to strains. While, Strength design is a method
in which the stress in the material is restrained to its yield limit.
