“Global Citezenship”
Title of the Article

1. Difficult Concepts (What concepts did you find difficult to understand?)

i. North-South dichotomy
ii. “Less pretention, more ambition”
iii. Communautarist Citizenship Theory

2. Insights (What new insights or learning did you gain in discussion/ activity?)

i. Before reading the article, I thought that development can only be achieved
through building infrastructures and creating different organizations that aims
to have economic growth within the state, that the only authorized people to
handle are the people who works in government. However, reading the
article, I now think that the nation of a state itself has the ability to do great
things that will help a country experience development. It is by means of
global citizenship. Authorities need to shift their focus on raising awareness to
the people. Because of this, people will become more knowledgeable about
their actions and will experience behavioral change making them active and
responsible citizen of a state. To be honest, it indeed a good investment since
it will last a lifetime. People who were taught to act accordingly will sooner
teach the next generation to act the same to. Thus, the desire to develop in
that particular country would never stop.

ii. Before reading the article, I thought that the idea of giving the people the
notion of them being the actors to achieve a sustainable development
would be much easier and definitely applicable to every country. Anything
would be possible if each citizen is doing their roles to promote sustainable
development. However, reading the article, I now realized that by doing this,
a country might face different problems and challenges. What if the
government fails to shape the behavior of its citizens? For example, in South
Sudan which has 73.0% adult illiteracy according to an article written by
Kiden (2017). How would a nation work together and follow their rules if most
of them are unable to read and write which are skills needed to possess to
conduct a particular task. Another example, in our country, the Philippines,
which practices democracy since President Marcos lost to President Corazon
Aquino. This democracy enabled Filipinos to establish their own beliefs and
principles and allows them to express their thoughts to the public. Sadly, some
of us abused our democratic power and eventually become hardheaded.
Investing for the global citizenship here in the Philippines would give a huge
challenge to the government as people cannot change their behaviors that
quick.

iii. Before reading the article, I thought that the tragedy, failures, and the
changes we’ve experienced like climate change, 9/11 terrorism, etc., are the
reasons why we were unable to develop. However, reading the article, I now
realize these as their rocket fuel to soar higher. These are the reasons together
with the positive ones why we are experiencing growth in todays world. I
never thought that these fall downs were used by the people as their
inspiration to create the world a better place. Because of these, the world
experienced growth in terms of trading goods and services, technologies
continue to become more innovative making our communications way a lot
easier. It really helps the people especially those who used to live in poverty
since economic growth became more evident to them.

3. Questions (What questions would you want answers for? Or vague areas you
want more explanations about?
i. What are the other methods to encourage a nation to embrace global
citizenship?
ii. I want to learn more about the different citizenship theories since in the
article, each only has a brief explanation.
iii. Could global citizenship be considered as a failure if a country fails to
meet the needs of one of its focus?
