Robert L. May was the creator of Rudolph. Robert May grew up in a secular and
affluent Jewish home in New Rochelle, New York. May's parents were hard hit by the
Great Depression and they lost their wealth. Sometime in the 1930s, May moved to
Chicago and took a job as an underpaid internal copywriter for Montgomery Ward. In
early 1939, May's boss at Montgomery Ward asked him to write a "merry" Christmas book
for shoppers and suggested that an animal be the star of the book.
Evelyn, May's wife, had contracted cancer in 1937 and was quite ill when she began
reading the book in early 1939. May "was inspired by the memories of her own painfully
shy childhood when she created her Rudolph stories." He decided to turn a reindeer into
the central character of the book because his 4-year-old daughter, Barbara, loved the
deer at the Chicago Zoo. He ran verses and chapters of Barbara Rudolph's poem to
make sure they entertained the children. The final version of the poem was read for the
first time to Barbara and the parents of his wife. Evelyn May died in July 1939 .. Her boss
offered to remove him from book assignments in light of his wife's death. May rejected
and completed the poem in August 1939. The pamphlet of Rudolph's poem was first
distributed during the holiday season of 1939. Buyers loved the poem and 2.4 million
copies were distributed. The wartime restrictions on the use of paper prevented it from
being reissued until 1946. In that year, another 3.6 million copies were distributed among
Montgomery Ward buyers.

In 1946, May received an offer from a company that wanted to make a record of the
spoken word of the poem. May could not give his approval (and receive compensation)
because Montgomery Ward had the rights to the poem. In late 1946 or early 1947, Sewell
Avery, the company's president, granted the copyright to the poem to May, free of
charge. The spoken version of the poem was a great sales success.
While watching the thick fog that had strayed from Lake Michigan, May came up with
the idea of a misfit and isolated reindeer due to its luminescent nose that used its physical
abnormality to guide Santa's sleigh and save Christmas. Searching for an alliterative
name, May scrawled possibilities on a piece of paper (Rollo, Reginald, Rodney and
Romeo were among the options) before circling her favorite. Rudolph.

Summary
Once upon a time there was a reindeer named Rudolph who, because he was born with
a curious and peculiar red nose, big and bright, walked alone in the world. The other
reindeers made fun of Rudolph all the time, with phrases like 'you look like a clown', 'you
have an apple in the nose' ... Rudolph felt very ashamed and every day he walked away
from people. His family felt very sorry for him.
The jokes about Rudolph's nose were so annoying and constant that Rudolph ended up
moving away from everyone. Live sad, locked in his house, extremely depressed. With the
support of his parents, Rudolph decided to leave the town where he lived and began to
walk aimlessly for days, months, years ...
Christmas was coming and Rudolph was still alone on his way. But one night, on
Christmas Eve, when the stars shone more brightly than on other days in the sky, Santa
Claus prepared his sleigh, like every year. He counted and lined up the 8 reindeer that
pull their sleigh to bring gifts to all the children of the world. Santa Claus had everything
ready when suddenly a huge and thick fog covered the whole earth.
Disoriented and frightened, Santa wondered how they would manage to fly the sled if
they could not see anything. How would they find the chimneys? Where would they
leave the gifts? In the distance, Santa Claus saw a bright red light and began to follow
her with his sleigh and reindeer. He could not know what it was about, but as they got
closer, they would have a huge surprise. It was reindeer Rudolph! Surprised and happy,
Santa asked Rudolph to pull him also from his sleigh. The reindeer could not believe it.
He accepted it immediately and with his nose he illuminated and guided Santa through
all the houses with children of the world.
And that is how Santa Claus managed to deliver all the gifts on Christmas night, thanks
to the effort and collaboration of Rudolph the reindeer. Without their red nose, children
would be without gifts until today. Rudolph became the most beloved and most
admired reindeer of all. A true hero!
