1 INTRODUCTION

The efficiency of a person depends on two factors, finally, the level of ability to do
a certain work and secondly, the willingness to do a work. So for as the first factor
is concerned it can be acquired by education and training, but the second factor can
be created by motivation. A person may have several needs and desires. It is only
strongly felt needs which motivates become. Thus motivates are a product of needs
and desires motivates are many and keep on changing with time motivates are
invisible and directed towards certain goals.

The word motivation has been derived from motive which means any idea, need or
emotion that prompts a man in to action. Whatever may be the behaviour of man,
there is some stimulus dependents upon the motive of the person concerned. Motive
can be known by studying his needs and desires.

Motivation is the process of steering a person’s inner drives and actions towards
certain goals and committing his energies to achieve these goals. It involves a chain
reaction starting with felt needs, resulting in motives which give rise to tension
which census action towards goals. Employee motivation is the “psychological
forces that determine the direction of a person’s level of persistence”. It is the
process of stimulating people to strive willingly towards the achievement of
organizational goals. Motivation is concerned with how behaviour gets started, is
energized, sustained and directed.

Motivation is the core of management. Motivation is an effective instrument in the


hands of the management in inspiring the work force. It is the major task of every
manager to motivate his subordinate or to create the will to work among the
subordinates. Motivation is an important function which very manager perform for
actuating the people to work for accomplishment of objectives of the organization.
Issuance of well – conceived instructions and orders does not mean that they will
be followed. A manager has to make appropriate use of motivation to encourage
the employees to follow them. Effective motivation succeeds not only in having an
order accepted but also in gaining a determination to see that it is executed and
effectively.

In order to motivate workers to work for the organizational goals, the managers
must determine the motives or needs of the workers and provide an environment in
which appropriate incentives are available for their satisfaction. If the management
is successful in doing so; it will also be successful in increasing the willingness of
the workers to work. This will increase efficiency and effectiveness of the
organization. There will be better utilization of resources and worker’s abilities and
capacities.

The strength of any organization is its dedicated people. If people attended to work
properly they can recognize their talents by developing their capabilities and
utilizing them appropriately, organizations are likely to be dynamic and grow fast.
Managing employee performance is an integral part of the work that all managers
and rating officials perform throughout the year. Ultimately the varieties of tasks in
any organization have to be accomplished by the people. Performance Appraisal

1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The study deals with identifying “Motivation level of employees in Grand Hyatt
cochin Bolgatty. The purpose of this study is to investigate and identify the
specific factors that have great impact on motivation of people working in Grand
Hyatt cochin Bolgatty.. The objectives of the study are, to determine the factors that
increase motivational level of employees in Grand Hyatt cochin Bolgatty to find
out the effects of employee’s motivation on organizational performance.

1.3 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

1. To study the socio-economic and demographic features of employees in Grand


Hyatt cochin Bolgatty.

2. To identify the factors which are needed to motivate the employees in Grand
Hyatt cochin Bolgatty.

3. To identify the employee demotivating factors in Grand Hyatt cochin Bolgatty.

4. To find out the relationship between employees motivation and employees


performance

1.4 RATIONALE OF THE STUDY

The purpose of the study is to get practical knowledge, experience and also to
know the various Motivating factors affecting the employees. The intention behind
choosing this topic is to study the motivation level of employees. The organization
must satisfy the employee’s needs and feeling obtaining their cooperation and their
support. Employees are back bone of every organization. So it is the responsibility
of the management to keep the employees to contribute more.

1.5 METHODOLOGY

Research methodology is a way to systematically solve research problem. Research


methodology is a science that helps studying how research is done in scientifically.
A research design is the arrangement of collection and analysis of data in a manner
that aims to combine the relevance to the research purpose with economy in
procedure. It constitutes the blue print for the collection, measurement and analysis
of data. For this project study descriptive research will undertake with structured
questionnaires. Descriptive research studies are those studies which are concerned
with describing the characteristics of a particular individual or of a group. The
major purpose of this research is the description of state of affairs, as it exists
present.
a) Primary data:

The primary data is collected through a structured questionnaire and observation.

b) Secondary data:

The secondary data is collected from company records, websites, industrial reports
and newspapers.

Research Instrument: The questionnaires will be the tool use for data collection.
Questionnaires are considered as the heart of a survey operation. It is an
instrument which measures responses to the same set of questions presented in the
same way to all participants. This helps to measure the motivation level of
employees and development of the organization more accurately.

Sampling Procedure: Here the research used simple random sampling studies.
Random sampling from a finite population refers to methods of sample selection
which gives each possible combination and equal probability of being picked up
and each item in entire population have an equal chance of being included in the
sample

a. Sample Unit
Sample unit is the employees of Grand Hyatt cochin Bolgatty.

b. Sample Size
As the name indicates, sample size refers to the number of respondents or the
size of the sample, which is to be surveyed. Here the total sample size taken
for the study will be 30 respondents from the unit.

1.7 LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

Though the study conducted to evaluate the motivational level of employees at


Grant Hyatt cochin Bolgatty, there will be some limiting factors pertaining to the
study. They are:
1. Due to the short span of time allotted for this project work intense study was not
possible.
2. Some of the employees did not co-operate with the survey.

3. The study was mainly based on the primary data and it was a limitation to the same.

4. Some data required for the project will be keeping confidential.

5. The organization has a large number work force of but the study will conduct only
for 30 employees.
