DUBE NMT PROJECT ACCELERATES TOWARDS COMPLETION

The Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA), on behalf of the City of Johannesburg, is

implementing the construction of Non-motorised Transport (NMT) Infrastructure at Dube
Station in Soweto.

Construction of the NMT infrastructure is currently underway on Leselinyana Street and

Mncube Drive. Once completed, the upgrades will promote pedestrian mobility and
connectivity, in particular to accessing Dube Station.

The public infrastructure project, which lies in Ward 39, is expected to be completed in
November 2019. Construction commenced on Tuesday, 09 April 2019, after Bophelong
Construction (Pty) Ltd was appointed as the main contractor.

“The non-motorised project is firmly in line with the City’s commitment to creating liveable,
sustainable urban environments, in which residents are able to navigate safely and
efficiently using both public and non-motorised transport,” MMC for Development Planning
Reuben Masango said.

The non-motorised transport project will also;

 Improve sidewalks, crosswalks, paths and networks

 Develop pedestrian oriented land use
 Increase road and path connectivity, with special non motorised shortcuts
 Address security concerns of pedestrians

It is also the objective of the JDA to undertake this public infrastructure project using labour
intensive approaches, in order to provide cost-effective short-term employment opportunities
to unskilled and semi-skilled workers.
A total of 15 emerging sub-contractors have been appointed for the execution of the
portions of the works in the NMT infrastructure project.

The scope of works includes the laying of paving blocks on existing sides, preparation of the
concrete channel and planting of trees and grass, the laying of concrete furniture and the
construction of the stormwater culverts and drainage system.

“This construction showcases how the City’s projects are playing a role in job creation and
skills development by creating employment opportunities to unskilled and semi-skilled
workers. Residents of Dube can look forward to infrastructure which provides improved
pedestrian mobility and connectivity,” MMC Masango said.
