The speech pathologist will be required to participate in clinical, educational and


administrative activities that are required to provide an efficient and effective speech
Purpose Of Position : pathology service to children with communication difficulties living in the local
community (Northern Sector of SESLHD).

• Assess, manage and treat children with communication disorders • Act as a speech
and language consultant • Attend case conferences and clinics relevant to the individual
caseload • Prepare programs/plans for management of children in the community.
These programs are for use at home and school. • Any other clinical duties as directed
by the Speech Pathology Manager.

Service Directors/Department Heads:

Implement and review Work Health and Safety policies and procedures ensuring
compliance with legislation resulting in Ministry of Health Audit Improvement
Consult with workers via agreed arrangements. Work Health and Safety is a
standard agenda item on team meetings. Support local health and safety
committees and health and safety representatives.
Follow the risk management process to ensure any workplace hazards are
identified, assessed, controlled and reviewed. This includes conducting regular
workplace inspections.
Ensure all incidents and near misses are reported, investigated and control
measures are implemented and monitored.
Actively participate and have up to date knowledge of your workplace including
hazards, risks, serious incidents and Safework NSW activity.
Supervise workers to ensure compliance with Work Health and Safety policies
and procedures.
Ensure workers attend education and training.
Ensure Work Health and Safety objectives are included and reviewed in business
plans as outlined in the Work Health and Safety Policy.
Work Health and Safety responsibilities are to be included in performance
agreements.

Key Accountabilities :

Be familiar with SCHN Child Protection Policy and Procedures. Report all allegations of
suspected child abuse and neglect by a health employee. Be familiar with the process of
assessing and reporting suspected cases of child abuse and neglect to the Department
of Community Services.

Complete Departmental Orientation
Complete (or provide evidence of compliance with) all Mandatory Training
requirements within the Orientation and Induction time frames shown in HETI
Online. This will include completion of the 12 requirements for All Staff and
additional ones required for specific roles.
Complete the ongoing mandatory training requirements including yearly
attendance at Fire Training practical and completion of eLearning and other
repeated training requirements.
Complete professional updates at regular intervals
Adhere to SCHN and Ministry of Health policies, procedures and guidelines.
Abide by NSW Health CORE values, Code of Conduct and Workplace Culture
Framework, demonstrating effective teamwork, maintaining respectful staff
relations and promoting a positive work environment.

RISK MANAGEMENT

Employees at all levels have a role to play in managing risk. The SCHN

process. Employees are expected to proactively contribute to the identification,
reporting and minimisation of risks.
Department Heads and Supervisors must: Accept accountability for
identifying, minimising and managing organisational risks by applying risk
management principles outlined in the Risk Management Policy. Develop a risk
conscious work-place by educating and supporting staff in proactively
identifying, reporting and mitigating risks. Ensure that plans are developed to
identify, assess and treat risks. Contribute to the development, maintenance

Department Heads and Supervisors:

Promote and coordinate continuous quality improvement activities, patient safety and
family-centred care within the department, facility and network. Develop key
performance indicators that provide outcome measures. Include continuous quality
improvement, patient safety and consumer partnership/ patient experience as standard
agenda items at department meetings. Include consumers in the evaluation and
planning of services. Ensure timely and accurate reporting and management of near
misses, actual incidents or patient safety concerns.

Employees:

Understand and practice patient safety and family-centred care. Participate in


continuous quality improvement activities. Work in partnership with consumers on
improving and evaluating the delivery of services with a focus on the patient

The speech pathologist will be required to meet regularly with the Manager of the
speech pathology department and with senior clinicians for supervision and discussion.
The aim of this position is to provide speech pathology services to children on the
community waiting list using the speech pathology guidelines adopted by the
department. This position may be based at two different sites and the speech

pathologist will be required to manage individual caseloads on both sites. The speech

evaluation of therapy and help with the management of the waiting list. The speech
pathologist will also participate in regular departmental activities (eg statistics, quality
projects, planning and education).

The speech pathologist will be required to communicate professionally with colleagues,


other health professionals, teahers and families. A high level of oral and written

The speech pathologist will be responsible for individual client management issues but
will follow the departmental guidelines for outpatient management. General clinical
Decision Making : decisions will be made in consultation with senior clinicians within the department.
Professional issues will be discussed in supervision with the Speech Pathology Manager.

2. Relevant graduate clinical experience with community health centre paediatric
caseloads and demonstrated ability to manage a busy and varied caseload

5. Experience providing lectures/training to speech pathology students, parents or
professional groups.
