POLICE ADVISORY
The Association has been advised by the Unlicensed Money Lending Strike Force of the Criminal Investigation
Department, Singapore Police Force to caution printing companies from printing flyers for money lending companies.

The Police have advised PMAS that they have come across many cases of printing companies printing flyers for
unlicensed money lending companies. Even licensed money lending companies are not allowed to advertise their
services via fliers.

Members are advised to take note of the Police Advisory and to comply with the law.

From 16 June 2014, KMlink Pte Ltd will be a subsidiary of Komori Corporation Japan. The new company will be called Komori
Southeast Asia Pte Ltd (KSA).

Komori chose Singapore as the hub of Asia due to the strategic position in Southeast Asia where we will be bringing Komori closer
to our Southeast Asia customers. The aim of the new company is to provide total solutions in the print industry include post press
equipment and quality consumable products.

Although there is a change of ownership of KMlink Pte Ltd, there will be no changes in the management and operation level support.

Tucked in a relatively unknown corner of
Sims Avenue, Drummond Printing is one
of the printing companies in Singapore
to tap on SPRING Singapore’s
Collaborative Industry Project (CIP) grant
for the implementation of Management
Information Systems (MIS).
Established since 1978, Drummond
Printing came a long way by first starting
out with single colour Heidelberg and
Ryobi press machines. Since then
Drummond Printing’s Chief Executive
Officer, Mr. Goh Chong Sing, single
handedly grew the business into a
reliable and reputable print provider well-
recognised by its customers.

Three decades on, Mr. Goh groomed
his son, Mr. Damien Goh, to be the
next leader of the business. Mr. Damien
recalled, “I used to be very curious
when I was young, and I always enjoyed
helping my father because I can learn
from him.” He continued, “That was also
when I first started to get myself involved
in this trade by helping out with simple
tasks like collating, inserting, helping with
deliveries etc.”
Despite starting out with no print
experience, Mr. Damien started his own
printing business during his three years
of studies to get hands on experience
in the printing industry. He took on
the challenge with a can-do attitude
and went into Drummond Printing
right after he completed his studies.
Today, he grew the business from a
traditional printing company into one
that embraces technology to uplift its
printing standards. He also expanded its
services to provide graphic designing,
digital printing, large format printing,
letter shopping and mailing.
Seeing the print volume in the market
becoming smaller and the increasing
need for more customised print jobs,
Mr. Damien expanded its digital printing
facilities by purchasing two units of Fuji
Xerox’s C1000 Press, and 700i Digital
Colour Press. These investments help
to complement its existing setup of
offset presses and large format printing
machines.
Nonetheless, with the expansion plans
ongoing, Mr. Damien also realized
the difficulty in managing operational
processes to achieve the level of speed,
cost-effectiveness and service required
to remain competitive in Singapore.
It also creates additional stress in the

work environment where everyone is
trying to fulfill their roles and to meet the
deadlines put forth by their customers.
After much thought, Mr. Damien decided
that it was time for him to put in place a
MIS solution. Co-incidentally, the Print &
Media Association of Singapore (PMAS)
and SPRING Singapore worked together
to promote the Collaborative Industry
Project (CIP) for the print industry.
Approved projects will be eligible for up
to 70% funding support for qualifying
development and adoption costs.
Fortunately for Quote & Print, SPRING
has approved it to be a vendor in this
pilot project for the printing industry.
Shortlisted by Mr. Damien to be
one of the print MIS providers in his
consideration set, he finally decided that
Quote & Print is the right solution for his
business.
Mr. Damien said, “Quote & Print’s track
records in Singapore gave me greater
confidence that the software is suitable
for my company. Their familiarity with
the printing industry means I have one
less concern to worry about. Together
with the assistance of the SPRING CIP
grant, it definitely helps to defray the
costs of investment and provides the
push-factor for SMEs like us to transform
and adopt productivity solutions. The
implementation of Quote & Print will
help us speed up our estimating, and
also better manage our production
floor to further improve efficiency and
profitability. It is definitely a much needed
change to keep us sustainable in a costly
business environment like Singapore.”

Postpress plays a particularly important
role in determining the quality of the
end product and creative suppliers can
harness special applications to boost their
productivity significantly. That is why more
than 200 customers from around the world
accepted an invitation from Heidelberg
to attend the “Postpress Special Folding
Days” at the Ludwigsburg site in early
June. During the events, they encountered
a huge range of special solutions based on
Stahlfolder folding machines.
NEW STAHLFOLDER BH/CH
FOLDING MACHINE SERIES
SUPPORTS ENTRY INTO THE
PROFESSIONAL FOLDING
MARKET
Taking centre stage were innovative
options for the production of direct mail
and several different folding machine
variants and options for the kinds of small
folds used in the packaging inserts that
accompany pharmaceutical products.
On show to the public for the first time
was the new Stahlfolder BH/CH folding
machine series, which delivers professional
folding production at an attractive price-
performance ratio.
“Events such as these bring together the
creativity of our customers and the vast
application know-how of our product

A clear trend is developing in industrialized
nations toward ever more productive
solutions. Due to continuing consolidation,
capacities are moving more and more
toward higher productivity and larger
print formats. In the emerging markets,
however, investment decisions are
primarily dominated by economic factors
such as low wage costs. That is why
Heidelberg is using the Special Folding
Days to present both special machines
and a realigned portfolio of folding
machines that responds to the various
different customer requirements.
When it comes to industrial high-
performance production, the Stahlfolder
TX 82 folding system and the versatile
Stahlfolder KH 82 combination
folding machine with the innovative PFX
(Pallet Feeder eXtended) stream feeder
highlight two key features of cost-effective
modern postpress operations - maximum
production output and application flexibility
with short makeready times. These special
systems can help to boost productivity
by up to 50 percent compared to
conventional production processes.
Heidelberg also launched a completely
new folding machine for cost-effective
standard production at the start of
this year - the Stahlfolder BH/CH
machines in the 50 x 70 centimeter
(19.69 x 27.56 inch) and 70 x 100
centimeter (27.56 x 39.37 inch) formats.
Print shops can use these versatile folding
machines as a low-cost entry-level option
for in-house postpress operations and
as a cost-effective means of expanding

capacities. Thanks to their end-to-end
MCT (Modular Control Technology)
control systems, they are fully compatible
with all Stahlfolder folding machines,
deliveries, and accessories.
To meet the wide range of requirements
and investment budgets of customers

Expoprint Latin America, the most
important graphic arts trade fair in South
America, will open its doors from 16 to 22
July in the Transamérica Expo Centre in
São Paulo. Together with sales company
Koenig & Bauer do Brasil, KBA and its
cooperation partner MBO will be manning
a stand in Hall C. Print experts from Brazil
and neighbouring countries will be treated
to live cutting-edge sheetfed offset
printing on a Rapida 105 in connection
with an M80 combi folding machine.
KBA RAPIDA 105 PRINTS WITH
DRIP-OFF EFFECTS
A six-colour version equipped with coater
and extended delivery of the rapida 105
with a sheet format of 740 x 1,050mm
(29.1 x 41.5in) and a maximum output
of 16,000sph will be on display printing
high-quality posters. Some of the print
samples will feature matt-gloss finishing
effects based on the drip-off technique.
The Rapida 105 on show will be furnished
with an additional package for handling
board and raised by 450mm (17.7in). It is
based on the same technological platform
as the Rapida 106 makeready champion.

PREMIERE OF MBO M80
FOLDING SYSTEM IN BRAZIL
The presentation of the M80 folder in
Brazil is the next step in the global rollout
of this innovative folding system for flexible
finishing. A key feature of the M80 is its
numerous modular add-ons which can be
retrofitted years after the initial purchase.
For example, there is the option of adding
two further buckle plates to the existing
four or to retrofit a patented slitter shaft
cassette. The subsequent automation
and conversion from a buckle folding
machine to a combi folding version is
also possible. 16-page signatures in A4
format will be produced live on the M80
at the trade fair.
MBO subsidiary Herzog+Heymann will
also unveil the new KL45 small folding
unit in Brazil. The machine is available in
defined configurations and can be delivered
as 8.4, 6.4 and 6.6. Printers can choose
between flat pile and round-pile feeders. At
Expoprint a KL45 with round-pile feeder, 1st
folder T8, 2nd folder T6 and vertical delivery
will process 40g (25lbs) paper to package
inserts for pharmaceutical products. Along
with products for the pharmaceutical
industry, a raft of special folding solutions
for packaging and mailings form the core of
Herzog+Heymann’s business.
In September 2013 KBA opened its own
sales and service subsidiary in Brazil
operating under the name Koenig & Bauer
do Brasil. The company which originated
from former sales agency Deltagraf
Representações Comerciais ltda. in São
Paulo, Brazil, generated pleasing sales
of KBA sheetfed and web presses in the
past and expanded its customer service
offerings further in the growth market Brazil.
This KBA subsidiary is also a sales partner
of MBO in Latin America’s largest market. In
the future Koenig & Bauer do Brasil aims to
takeover service activities for KBA users in
Argentina, Uruguay, Chile and Paraguay.

Lasertryk.dk has installed a Kodak Magnus 800 Quantum
Platesetter imaging Kodak Sonora XP Process Free Plates to
increase productivity and raise its environmental credentials.
The Danish company and its sister companies Lasertryk.dk
and ScandinavianBook comprise one of the largest commercial
print production organizations in the Nordic region. Based in
Aarhus, Denmark and with an impressive multiproduct offering,
Lasertryk.dk fronts the operation offering a digital and offset
printing service online.
Established in 2005, Lasertryk.dk provides a portfolio of
offset print services with a wide array of finishing whilst
ScandinavianBook covers the digital book production market.
Each sister company specializes in short runs and a fast
turnaround time. The company is seeing a growth rate of 20%
year on year.
Mads Bindslev, Pre-Press Manager at Lasertryk.dk says,

CTP IN ACTION – UTILIZING THE SONORA XP PLATE
“We are now using the Kodak Sonora XP Process Free Plate
on both devices,” explains Mads Bindslev. “Kodak examined
our business model and at first advised us to continue using
our original Kodak CTP – the Lotem Platesetter - but with
Sonora XP Plates thus having a backup option without adding
extra developer. But we decided in unison to opt for the
Kodak Sonora XP Plates on both CTPs and therefore simplify
logistics. With the Lotem Platesetter and the new Magnus 800
Platestetter working in harness we can achieve 80 plates per
hour – 60 on the Magnus Platestetter and 20 on the Lotem
Platesetter.
These production levels are changing our business and
raising the bar. There is of course the additional benefit of
being completely chemistry free in an environmentally clean
production space. By taking out the variable (the developer) in
prepress, we have even better process control and can maintain
stability and reliability in full plate production.”

daily business at Lasertryk.dk. The plate makers are now
reporting how pleased they are with the choice of the new plate.
“The plate and press minders were very hesitant at first as it is
new technology to them,” continues Mads Bindslev. “They have
had to adapt to a new routine but now they find it easy. We had
to show our staff the benefits, but once they could see that the
Kodak Sonora XP Plate is robust and reliable and works like any
other plate, they are more than delighted with the results.”

to align colour across the devices. This gives us integrated colour

saving ink consumption while keeping the integrity of the images.”

Lighting, heating and recycling are all addressed as part of the
company’s environmental policy. The prepress and printing house
is at the forefront of technology and decreasing its environmental
footprint in production. Now employing 28 staff, Lasertryk.dk has
recently moved to a new site doubling its square footage and
capacity to meet the region’s significant increase in demand for
short run on demand high quality print.

A Simple Guide for Closely Held and Family Businesses

Often the prime focus of business
succession is the business and
maximising its sale value, followed
closely by minimising tax. Building capital
value is a critical element of effective

succession as is optimum tax planning,
however neither serves any purpose if
value is destroyed by family disputes.
In this article we expand the
consideration of family and succession
by examining the appointment of a new
CEO and family governance.
You may have chosen a succession
path that involves the transfer of the
business through to your children or
other family members. Your choice may
be the outright sale of the business or
possibly even holding the business and
establishing an external management
team. Whichever succession path you
have chosen, sooner or later you will
need to release day to day control and
appoint a new CEO. Sooner is probably
the better answer and careful planning,
selection and feedback is the key to
sustaining and growing capital value.
THE NEW CEO
It should not matter whether the business
is remaining in the family or changing
hands, the answer as to who should be
the next CEO is always the same; who
is best qualified to ensure the future
success of the business? If we pause

for a moment and consider succession
within the family, we know that at times
the position of CEO will flow as a matter of
birth right. We also know that this is not
necessarily the best business decision,
however family is family.
If you know that your business and its
management will pass along family lines,
then as part of the succession process
you must train and develop its future
leaders and surround them with the best
people possible.
Families will often require children to
work outside the family business for
a number of years to gain valuable
experience that may be infused into the
family business in the future. Ensuring
children gain outside experience is to
protect against the business becoming
too insular and faltering with an
inadequate level of knowledge.
Families will often rotate children through
various roles to ensure they are exposed
to all aspects of the business from the
ground up and do not simply walk in at
the top.
Testing the capability and suitability of
children to the role by providing them
with a series of challenges or allowing
them to manage one aspect of the
business is also recommended. It not
only permits them an opportunity to
decide if the life of a CEO is for them,
it allows you the opportunity to see
whether they have the capability and
what level of support they may require.
If there are several children who could
possibly assume the CEO role, then
permitting each one a chance of proving
their merits can be an equitable way of
finding the right role in the business for
each family member.
Whoever your CEO is going to be, you
must decide in advance what traits and
competencies they should possess
and what results they will be required
to deliver before selecting them. This is
where a robust strategic business plan
that carefully considers the future path of
the business is critical. What has made
your business successful for the last 40
years may not be what will make that
same business successful for the next
40 years. The business that has evolved
over the last 40 years will continue to
evolve over the next 40 years.
The points here are simple but are often
ignored:
• How can you select the best CEO for
your business if you have not carefully
considered the path along which they
must steer the business? What skills
will they need, what challenges will
they face and what type of leader will
they need to be?

• Would any decent CEO accept a
position in a business without having
a clear understanding of the strength
of the business, its competitive future
and the expectations of its owners?
• Can either party agree to work
with the other if there is not a clear
understanding and commitment to
achieving agreed results including
expected profit, dividends, debt
levels, family equity, investment in new
businesses etc.?
Your strategic business plan will allow
you to form and articulate each of these
aspects:

The next most important decision will
relate to the governance structure placed
around the new CEO. A key aspect
of the Family Charter (discussed in
the last edition) is the separation of the
dealings of family and business, and
ensures each has confidence in the role
and responsibilities of the other.

The governance structure must allow the
new CEO to focus clearly on growing the

must be in place and utilised. Importantly,
they must also be protected from family
matters and not seek to respond to family
demands whilst balancing these with
business imperatives.
The future success of your business
will depend on the CEO you choose
and the governance structure you place
around them. Choose very carefully and
do everything possible to underpin and
support their success.

The Association held its 76th Annual General Meeting on
Friday 20th June 2014 at the premises of the Employment
& Employability Institute (e2i) – 80 Jurong East Street 21. 45
member firms were represented at the meeting. The Honorary
Secretary, Mr. Loh Wee Hiang called the meeting to order at
7:30 pm as there was a quorum present.
The President, Mr. Lim Geok Khoon thanked members for their
strong support to the Association during 2013/2014. In particular
he expressed his appreciation to the sponsors of the various
events – especially Hewlett-Packard Singapore, Acacia I.T.
Services and TIPPS for sponsoring the PMAS Golf Tournament
2014/PMAS Chinese New Year Members’ Networking Dinner
held on 24th January 2014 at the Singapore Island Country

Mr. Lim Geok Khoon said that membership of the Association
had increased from 124 in June 2013 to 145 in June 2014. The
Printers in the Print Media Hub had joined the Association as
members. Singapore Press Holdings had also re-joined as a
member. This constituted a 17% increase in membership over
the last twelve months. PMAS now represents 80% of the
printing industry output in Singapore.
Mr. Lim Geok Khoon explained that he was proposing to increase
the size of the Management Committee from thirteen to fifteen
and to cap the number of Suppliers to five. This change will

give more opportunities for representatives from Printers and
Suppliers to come forward and serve the Association. Two
separate resolutions had been proposed to achieve this purpose.
Mr. Lim said that more Suppliers should be encouraged to serve
in the Management Committee as they will be able to contribute
to the Association. Suppliers tend to move around more and
thus are more aware of developments in the printing industry
and through regular updates from their headquarters. Mr. Lim
urged Members to support the two resolutions and to elect
fifteen persons to the Management Committee 2014/2016 from
the twenty - two nominations received.
Mr. Lim thanked the out - going Management Committee for
2012/2014 and the staff of the PMAS secretariat for their effort
and contributions over the last two years.
The Honorary Secretary, Mr. Loh Wee Hiang reviewed the major
events and activities in 2013/2014 which included the tour to
China Print 2013 last May, the Study Tour to Europe in October/
November 2013, Print Conference 2013 in November 2013
and the PMAS Golf Tournament 2014 cum Chinese New Year
Members’ Networking Dinner held on 24th January 2014 at the
Singapore Island Country Club. Mr. Loh reminded Members of

Print Conference 2014 which will be held on 25th July 2014 at
the e2i premises.
The Honorary Treasurer, Ms. Genevieve Chua reviewed the
Financial Statements for 2013/2014. She explained that the
Association had incurred a loss of $29, 307 in 2013/2014. This
was due to higher operating costs.
Ms. Chua said that more companies had joined as members
over the last twelve months (increase of 17%) resulting in an
increase in Members’ entrance and subscription fees (increase
of 16.46%). Advertisement revenue in the PRINT Singapore
publication had also seen an increase of 55.91 %. The
Association had also decided to publish the Singapore Printing
Industry Directory in-house from 2014. This will result in higher
advertisement revenue in the next financial year. She said that
the Association will be in a much better financial position in
2014/2015.
The Members approved the minutes of the last Annual General
Meeting held on 21st June 2013 and the Annual Report for
2013/2014 (including the Financial Statements for 2013/2014).

Meng & Co as the External Auditor for
2014/2015.

The Members noted that Mr. Herbert

Cheong (Cyber), Mr. Chua Chen How
(Fancy Papers Supplier) and Mr. Sunny
Yong (Sunway Trading) remained as
Trustees of the Association.

The Members voted to elect the

Management Committee for 2014/2016
by secret ballot from the twenty-two
nominations received.

The Annual General Meeting ended at

9.30 pm after the results of the elections
for the new Management Committee for
2014/2016 were announced. A buffet
dinner was served for all participants.

The newly elected Management

Committee met immediately after the
Annual General Meeting to elect the
Office-Bearers.

PMAS SIGNS
LETTER OF
COLLABORATION
WITH ITE
PMAS has signed a Letter of Collaboration (LOC) with the
Institute of Technical Education (ITE). The objectives of the
collaboration are:
1. To promote authentic learning by giving ITE students an
opportunity for real work and by sponsoring awards for top
students.
2. To develop student capabilities through participation in joint
industry projects.
3. To develop staff competencies through joint ICT projects
and event organisation.
A signing ceremony was held on 3rd June 2014 at ITE West.
PMAS President, Mr. Lim Geok Khoon signed for PMAS and ITE
West Principal Dr. Yek Tiew Ming signed for ITE.
ITE West had undertaken a revamp of the PMAS website using
their expertise and resources. The revamped website became
operational in June and was officially launched during the PMAS
76th Annual General Meeting on 20th June 2014.

per year. In addition PMAS will sponsor student awards for
outstanding ITE students which will be presented at the annual
graduation ceremonies.
PMAS and ITE will collaborate on mutually agreed projects like
competitions, public seminars, forums and workshops. ITE will if
requested by PMAS undertake consultancy services or projects
and will grant access to its facilities if there is a need.

CYBER OPENS
TECHNOLOGY CENTRE
IN SENAI, JOHOR
Cyber has opened a new 4,000 square metre Technology Centre in Senai, Johor.
The officially opening ceremony was held on Thursday 5th June 2014.

The Guest-of-Honour was Mr. Hiroshi
Urakami, Chairman of the Ryobi Ltd
Group. The other Special Guests were
Mr. Akira Urakami, Chairman of the
Ryobi MHI Graphic Technology Ltd and
Mr. Eijiro Hori, President and CEO of
Horizon International, Inc.
The nearly 200 invited guests toured the
Cyber Technology Centre which houses
nearly twenty state-of-the art printing
equipment before the official opening
and ribbon-cutting.
To round off the celebrations a
commemorative dinner was held in the
evening at the Le Grandeur Palm Resort.
Mr. Herbert Cheong, Chairman of Cyber
(Pte) Ltd said that the opening of the new
Cyber Technology Centre in Senai, Johor
is testimony to Cyber’s confidence in the
future of the printing industry and the
commitment to its business partners and
customers.
Meanwhile Cyber (Pte) Ltd has
announced that its corporate HQ is
moving back to 16/18 Jalan Kilang Barat,
Singapore 159358 from July 2014.
