CHAPTER I

Introduction to the study

Background of the study

The choice of a course and which school to enter in college is one of the
major decisions faced by graduating maritime student which is an important
element of their learning process. The course and school selection decision will
most likely define their future success. The students must know on what
degree to pursue in college, chosen course must fit to their abilities and
interests so that it will not be hard for them. Choosing a career or education
program that fits your to personality is a vital step toward career well-being
and success–job satisfaction, good grades, and graduating on time. As a
parent, you know that you affect your child's career development and career
choice. You also know that the career choices young people make will affect
their job satisfaction, where they live, how much they earn, and who their
friends are.

Students are very much focused on academic performances but they


never assess themselves because they haven’t explored in Schools/colleges.
Guidance and counseling is the process which helps the students to know their
skills, interests, personality that will help students in further career selection.
Guidance is the process in which person able to know their ability, interest, a
capacity that will help in the encounter of problems faced by them. Guidance is
the process of a dynamic interpersonal relationship that is prepared to
influence the person’s attitude and follow-up behavior. According to McDonald,
The objective of Guidance is to assist students and teachers in making
available desirable qualifications and skills rather than achieving the goals of
educational programs.

The school and faculties take a responsibility of these senior high school
students to help them make a crucial decisions on what courses should they
take in college. Teacher should maximize the learning development of one's
student they must guide in every steps of a way. As a whole, they will be
helpful in formulating systematic goals of the students.
Conceptual Framework of the Study

The conceptual framework of the study is shown in figure 1 below. The


independent variable is the College course preference and the dependent
variable is the chosen career of graduating students of Colegio De La Purisima
Concepcion.

Figure 1 presents the schematic diagram showing the relationship that

exist between the respondents’ College course preference and chosen career.

Statement of the problem

Generally, this study aims to determine the course preference and


chosen career of Grade 12 students of Colegio de la Purisima Concepcion at
Inzo Arnaldo Boulevard, Roxas City for the School Year 2019-2020.

Specifically, it seeks to answer the following questions:

1. What is the college course preference of graduating maritime senior high


school student of Colegio De La Purisima Conception?
2. Is there a college course preference of graduating senior high school
student if classified according to sex, family income?
3. Is there a difference in chosen career of graduating maritime senior high
school student if classified according to sex and family income?
4. Is there a relationship between college course preferences of graduating
maritime senior high school student of Colegio De La Purisima
Concepcion?

Significance of the Study

Students - This will enable a feature that will help every Grandaunt a chance
to choose the perfect course and the skills they would developed and/or obtain
through process. This will also help every graduates to reestablish the skills
they already have in order to choose their future career.

Teachers - This will also help teachers to create a better academic structure in
order to maximize skills of the graduates in their specific choice of course and
future career.

Guidance Counsellor – it will aware them that they do some improvements to


help students in choosing their desired course and chosen career. This also will
help them to assist students in their academics skills.

Future Researchers - This study can serve as basis for future studies
regarding to survey-correlational study of College course preference and chosen
and serve as a reference for further understanding.

Definition of Terms

For purposes of clarity and precisions, important terms which will be


used in this study are defined.

Graduates –a person who has successfully completed a course of study or


training, especially a person who has been awarded an undergraduate
academic degree.

Guidance - advice or information aimed at resolving a problem or difficulty,


especially as given by someone in authority.

Goal - the object of a person's ambition or effort; an aim or desired result.

Scope and Delimitations of the Study

This Case study will aim to determine the relationship between College
course preference and chosen career of grade 12 maritime students.

The study will be conducted during the first semester of school year
2019-2020 among the grade 12 students as a result of satisfied random
sampling of Grade 12 maritime students enrolled during the school year 2019-
2020 in Colegio de la Purisima Concepcion at Inzo Arnaldo Boulevard, Roxas
City.

Data Gathering Procedure

To determine the College course preference and the Chosen career of the
respondents. Data will be gathered using the researchers’ made questionnaire.

In the same way, the personal data information sheet will be used to
gather the students’ personal characteristics.

The independent variable in the study will be the College course


preference of grade 12 students while, the dependent variable will be the
chosen career of graduating senior high school student of Collegio De la
Purisima Concepcion.
