“They’re the same model of iPhone,
just used differently…”
Do algorithms exist within our iPhone data that tailor the
smoothness of updating the iOS depending on the
supposed tech-savviness of the user? My iPhone, that
regularly browses tech-related sites and is well used
across all of the native apps and features, updated to
iOS 13 just fine. My daughter’s on the other hand, that
mainly launches social media apps and online shopping
sites, didn’t. They’re the same model of iPhone, just
used differently, and upon her device becoming what
can only be described as right royally buggered up, her
first thought was to buy a new iPhone – as luck would
have it a whole new range of which has just been
launched! Thankfully, super-dad here managed to get
her unresponsive, erratic iPhone into Device Firmware
Upgrade (DFU) mode and restore and update it
relatively smoothly. But this is a tricky, cumbersome
process that others with large, disposable incomes may
not favour. If you do manage to update to iOS 13 then

The global market has
dwindled, and with it the
urge to upgrade every 12 to 24 months.
Customers are more savvy than ever,
preferring to keep handsets for longer
– you can easily get three or four years’
life out of a premium smartphone these
days – moving onto SIM only contracts or
buying devices outright. Major new rivals
in the Far East have challenged Apple’s
stranglehold on the market too. So, all our
eyes were on Apple’s September keynote
to see what Tim Cook’s response would
be. Would we see a radically different
iPhone or would Apple stick to its well-
trodden path of evolution over revolution?
We were treated to three new iPhones –
iPhone 11, 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max. Here’s
a guide of what you can expect.

Triple-camera system
First up, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro
Max. “iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro
Max are the most powerful and advanced
smartphones we have ever made. They
are packed with sophisticated technology
that pros can count on to get their work
done, and for anyone who wants the very
best device made, even if they are not
a pro,” said Phil Schiller, Apple’s senior
vice president of Worldwide Marketing,
at the keynote. “iPhone 11 Pro has the
first triple-camera system in iPhone and
is far and away the best camera we’ve
ever made, it provides our customers
with a great range of creative control and
advanced photo and video editing features
in iOS 13. The Super Retina XDR is the
brightest and most advanced display in
iPhone and the A13 Bionic chip sets a
new bar for smartphone performance and
power efficiency.”

person to comment – but anyone who has
used Portrait mode before is going to love
this new option. It’s going to make a huge
difference to zooming in on subjects too.
Battery life is another major improvement,
with Apple claiming an extra six hours
of juice compared to the Xs Max. There’s
even a fast charging adapter in the box
as standard.
Pro performance does mean a pro price.
The iPhone 11 Pro starts at £999/$999 and
the 11 Pro Max comes in at £1,099/$1,099.
But if your budget does not stretch to
those figures, the entry-level – and that
isn’t doing it any justice – iPhone 11 packs
an almighty punch and starts at a more
wallet-friendly £699/$699.

customers. We think people will love it.”
It’s hard to argue with Phil here. It
comes with a 6.1-inch all-screen Liquid
Retina display, has better water resistance
and a vibrant new colour selection. The
A13 Bionic chip is a 20% improvement
over last year’s model, Face ID is 30%
quicker and Apple is promising all-day
battery life too. The camera system is
a dual-system only, so you don’t get
the Pro option of a Telephoto lens. It’s
fair to say the iPhone 11 will be the
most popular iPhone in the coming 12
months, following in the footsteps of the
successful iPhone XR.
If Apple sticks to its naming
conventions, next year will see the 11s
released. For those of us desperate to see a
radically different iPhone, it could be 2021
before that happens. In the meantime,
rest safe in the knowledge that Apple’s
strategy of evolution is still making the
best smartphones in the world. The choice
for buyers has never been better. We can’t
wait to put them to the test for you soon.

Apple Arcade
is out now Apple Arcade
For $4.99/£4.99 a month, users get unlimited
access to the entire catalogue of over 100 new,
exclusive games, all playable across iPhone,
iPad, iPod touch, Mac and Apple TV. Apple Arcade
games can all be played offline, and a single subscription
includes access for up to six family members with Family
Sharing. “We think customers of all ages are going to
be delighted that a single subscription gives the whole
family unlimited access to the full catalogue of amazing
Apple Arcade games, all without any ads or additional
purchases,” says Phil Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president
of Worldwide Marketing.

Apple TV+ launches in November Apple TV+

Apple’s long-awaited Netflix rival Apple TV+ launches on
November 1 in 100 countries and will cost $4.99/£4.99. The
streaming service will come with a free seven-day trial period,
but it will also be free for a year with any new iPhone, iPad or Apple TV.
Apple TV+ will be the first streaming service to launch with only original
content. “With Apple TV+, we are presenting all-original stories from the
best, brightest and most creative minds, and we know viewers will find
their new favourite show or movie on our service,” says Zack Van Amburg,
Apple’s head of Worldwide Video.

in iOS 13 is easy because Apple
ensures that they receive the
attention and marketing that they deserve.
This is not the whole story, however,
because in every new iOS release there are
many changes in the background that go to
make up a complete release.
A lot of the changes are not hidden
in any way and you will likely find them
at some point, but it will help to know
where they are early so that you can take

go through all of the secrets, but that would
take forever and some do not merit close
attention. It is, however, these perceptively
tiny changes that highlight the care and
attention Apple puts into iOS. Anything
from tiny pixel moves to minimal alignment
tweaks are dotted throughout iOS 13
alongside the more obvious changes and
we will try to highlight all that will provide

3 The minor details
It is the small stuff that will help you to
create a big powerful look. Eyebrows and
face shape may not seem important, but

There is a much cleaner and better
organised profile screen in the Health app
which lets you get to what you need to
see more efficiently. This is on top of all of
the other changes to Health which come
together to make complex daily health
tracking as simple as can be.

In a Messages conversation tap the
Memoji icon and then the ‘…’ option. Now
tap ‘New Memoji’ to start the process of
using the extra Memoji variety in iOS 13.
4 Memoji stickers
A set of stickers will immediately be
created to use in future conversations.
These are likely to be the new feature you
use most often going forwards.
Reading Goals
Books now has a new feature called
Reading Goals. You can set a daily goal
which is measured in minutes and also a
long-term goal for the number of books
you want to read. It’s an unobtrusive
feature that could spur you on to read a
little more each day.
2 Time to stylise
You will now be presented with
hairstyle options, of which there are now
many available. Take your time to choose
the closest style to your current look.
5 New Animojis
As a bonus there are three new
Animojis to play with. You can now play
with a mouse, an octopus and a cow.

New share suggestions
The new share suggestions in the share
panel add a lot of colour and extra options
for when you want to communicate with
others or send data to apps, but you need
to spend time setting it up properly so that
the panel does not take too long to use
each time.

Smaller improvements
There are so many smaller changes in iOS 13 that will make you
wonder why they were not always in place, but for most of us they
would not have even been thought about. It is only when Apple
changes them that we notice what has been improved which is a
serious strongpoint of the brand.

1 Minimal volume slider

Gone is the big and bulky volume
notification block that used to sit in the
middle of the screen. It has been replaced
with a smaller slider to the left.
2 Share your folders
You can now share an entire folder from
within the Files app to other people. This is a
step towards offering Dropbox-like capability
from an iPhone or iPad.
3 External storage
This change is potentially huge. With
the right adaptor you can now explore the
content or external drives and memory
cards using your iOS device.

4 Your own fonts

Up until now you have had to use third-
party apps to mimic font customisation, but
iOS 13 allows you to install your own fonts
for use anywhere.
5 Maps collections
The new collections feature in Maps
lets you save items such as restaurants and
businesses in easy to manage lists that can
be accessed in seconds.
6 Hearing health
As a prime sense it is important to look
after your hearing. Apple now caters for this
through the Health app and also through an
Apple Watch connected to iOS 13.

Apple has taken the previously somewhat
simplistic photo editing tools to a new level in
iOS 13 and given the majority of people all of
the tools they will need to make their snaps
perfect. They work very naturally on an iPad or
iPhone and the end results can be stunning if
you take a little bit of time.

You can zoom in a long way to
ensure that the adjustments you
are making will actually bring
benefits to the image. It feels like a
professional editing suite of tools
in the palm of your hand.

is a real needle in a haystack task, but not
so with iOS 13. You can now use multiple
search terms, separated by commas, to
focus in on an exact photo and you will
likely be stunned by the results. Just two

iPhone grows
The new ‘Find My’ app cleverly
combines Find my iPhone and Find
my Friends into one app which makes
perfect sense. It is easy and obvious to
use and will feel familiar the first time
you fire it up. There is, however, one
feature that feels like magic in how it
helps you find your device.

The ‘Devices’ tab lets you find any
device that is connected to your iCloud

In Settings>iTunes & App Store you can
scroll down to ‘App Downloads’ and select

8 Add remaining clips
Add clips 5-7 to the timeline. Retime clip 5
to 8x. Retime clip 6 to 4x so that the character
begins to decelerate. Add Trails to clips 5 and

hink about how your favourite songs make
you feel. The very best ones tend to evoke
an emotional response, be it uplifting
or melancholy and everything between. This is
achieved in no singular way, of course, but most
often through changing key. GarageBand projects
start in the key of C major by default, however a
feature called the Transposition track allows us to

At a new project start, if we know it, we
tend to set the key. Defaulting to C major, it is
switched by clicking the key display within the
LCD and choosing via the pop-up.
2 Adding music
As you go on to add music regions to
project tracks, they follow that set key. So for
example, Apple Loops will switch to adopt this
base key that we will transpose from.
3 Show track
With a subsequent project then populated
with tracks and regions, show the Transposition
track by navigating to Track>Show

4 Transposition track

transpose pitch away from the central key.

7 Editing points
Clicking and dragging any single point
up or downwards will transpose key pitch by
increments. These range an octave either way,
so zero to +12 or zero to -12 respectively.
8 Point positioning
Drag a point left or right along the line to
position where you want the transposition to
occur. You can also copy points by using alt-
drag and remove with the Delete key.
9 Preview changes
The best way to evaluate key changes is to
preview project playback (Space). Toggling on
the Cycle area (C) over where the transposition
occurs can be useful here.

Step-by-step View and edit EXIF metadata

1 Browse photos
Install Exif Viewer Lite from the App Store
and open it. Photos are shown as cards and
brief EXIF details are displayed on them. Tap
the heart icon to mark your favourites.
2 Flip the card
Swipe over a photo card to flip it over and
basic camera settings are displayed like the
aperture, ISO sensitivity, focal length, flash and
star rating. Tap it to continue.
3 View all data
All the EXIF data is displayed. Swipe up
to see a long list of the camera settings used
to take the photo. A toolbar appears at the
bottom to edit or remove exif info.

4 Remove EXIF info

Tap the ‘Remove Location’ or ‘Remove
EXIF’ button to strip it out of the photo. Tap
‘Modify’ to overwrite the original. We’ll see later
how to save a copy and keep the original.
5 Location information
Back at the EXIF display (Step 3) swipe up
to get to the bottom and see where the photo
was taken, unless you removed the info. Tap
‘Open in Map App’ to see a larger version.
6 Share a photo
Tap the Share button in the top-right
corner and before the usual iOS sharing
options appear, you can choose to share with
or without EXIF information. Select an option.

to flip it over and the thumbnail

photo files, but why? Changing camera

are pointless, but there are more useful
items like Caption, Title, Copyright and
Headline. At least fill in the Copyright

is better than no ownership.
9 Save photo copies
Tap the arrow in the bottom-right corner
in Step 3 and turn off both switches. Modified
photos are saved to two albums Exif Edited
and Exif Removed, keeping the originals.

or Files tab, find an image, select the ‘…’ icon next to the
filename and select ‘Save As Scan’. Dropbox lets you scan documents in-app and upload them
straight to your online storage for safe-keeping

1 Create a file
Update and launch the Dropbox app
and you can make use of the new quick-scan
feature. It will appear in the top-right corner of

your Dropbox account when you’re online, however.
5 Name the scan
Tap ‘Next’ if you’re satisfied with the
scanned image (edit by pressing the middle
slider icon). Tap and change the file name,

1 Open the app

After adding people to the Find My Friends
app on your iPhone (see the opposite page),

2 Find a friend
The entries give a single-line indication of
a friend’s whereabouts. If you’ve added more
than one friend, cycle through them by turning
the Digital Crown on your Watch.
3 Tap an entry
When you select a friend, you’ll be shown
a map of their location, complete with an
orange marker. Use the Digital Crown or your
finger to scroll and you’ll see an address.

4 Get directions
If you’d like to navigate to the location of

5 Contact your friend
To the right of the car icon is a contact
button. By pressing this you can choose to get
in touch with your friend either via a phone call
or by sending a quick message.

1 Wear your Watch

Download What3Words from the App
Store and ensure it is installed on your Watch.
To check, open the My Watch app go to ‘My

With the What3Words app on your Watch,
go ahead and tap the icon on your Watch
screen. The Watch app will open but it will take
a brief moment to establish your location.
3 Sort a problem
If the screen continues to show the app
is searching for a location, then there’s a good
chance you do not have Location Services
enabled on your iPhone. Grab your phone.

Still getting no joy? Then you’ll need to
check What3Words is allowing your location to

WOW – THE AXA35 IS A good-
looking beast. Unboxing it for the
first time, we fell in love with its
minimal frontage, sleek dimensions,
dark grey finish and, when you place
it down, the way it just seems to float
like a Landspeeder permanently
parked at Mos Eisley. This optical
illusion is created by a set-back
wedge on the underside that is neatly
obscured by the shadow of the unit
itself, and the result certainly garners
instant admiration.
Beneath a dot-matrix display on
the front panel of the AXA35 are
small buttons to select the input (A1
AUX, A2, A3, A4 and Phono), and
spread wider to the sides are sockets
for headphones (6.35mm) and AUX-in
(3.5mm), the power button and the
volume control knob. We were slightly
disappointed that the turning action
for the volume felt a little too indexed
as we would have felt that a smoother,
friction motion would have been more
befitting of the overall style of the
piece – but that’s just us.

the ground compared to the cheap and cheerful

Bleak Sword. The good news is that there’s plenty
of gaming styles on display so you’ll certainly
find something that you enjoy, and the library is
constantly swelling, which makes us optimistic
for the future.
Unless you spend a lot of time playing games on
your iOS device then we’d recommend holding fast
on subscribing for another month or two until the
content really takes off as it’s currently too patchy
to offer bang for your buck.
