IBPS PO/RRB Bank Exams - Tips to solve Arrangement based

Puzzles
Arrangement based Puzzles are a staple diet of the Reasoning Ability section in every Bank PO Exam. The IBPS RRB Of ce
Assistant Prelims has one or two puzzles while the IBPS RRB Of cer Scale 1 Prelims Exam has seen four puzzles last year. IBPS PO
Prelims Exam also has up to four puzzles.

Puzzles are those high risk - high reward questions. You get the logic correct and you get all the ve questions related to the
puzzle correct. However, if you get entangled in the puzzles, you are likely to have spent 10 minutes on the puzzle with very little
to show for the effort at the end of it. Most students end up falling into the second category. And in an exam with duration of only
45 minutes to 1 hour, 10 minutes can become a very costly investment.

Take a Free IBPS Online Mock Test (/component/users/?view=registration&from=btrial)

In this blog article, I shall help you identify the right puzzles to attempt and tricks to get these puzzles correct in the shortest
possible time.
We have covered these puzzles in lot much more detail in our Online Live Classes. In case you have missed out our Live Sessions
on different kinds of reasoning puzzles that appear in the Bank Exams, you can nd them on our YouTube Channel.

Puzzles can come in different varieties - Arrangement based Puzzles, Table based Puzzles, Games & Tournament based Puzzles,
Truth & Lie (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iXE4769BsQI)  and Graph-based Puzzles
h ilec.oor
(tps/:wwwc.onduraionn m/) Decision Making
(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-2YxglkqB20) and Input-Output and Cube & Dice based Puzzles.

First and foremost, understand that you will not have time to attempt all the puzzles in the exam. You will need to choose the
right puzzles to attempt. But for that, you need to know which puzzles are easier and which ones are dif cult. If you have taken a
few Full-Length Tests on Conduira Online, the analysis would help you identify the variety of puzzles you are good with. That is a
good place to start. For example, I am generally good with Arrangement and Table Based Puzzles but not very good with Truth &
Lie Based puzzles. Understanding this will help you choose the right kind of puzzles for YOU to attempt.

But that is only the rst step. Even within the set of puzzles that you are good at, you need to be able to understand the dif culty
level and gure out if you can crack the puzzle in less than 7 to 10 minutes. That is the maximum time you would be able to invest
in a single puzzle in the exam. But how do you whether a puzzle is easy or dif cult before you even start the puzzle? Let me help
you with that. Following are a few tips which are thumb rules (i.e., they are mostly true but not always true) that could help you to
quickly identify the dif culty of a puzzle.

Tip 1 - More the positive information, easier the puzzle is

If a lot of clues given in the puzzle are positive - i.e., Ram is wearing a blue shirt instead of negative - Ram is NOT wearing a blue
shirt, then the puzzle could take lesser time. Negative information often leads to multiple possibilities and you might end up
ignoring some of them and therefore go wrong.

b Tip 2 - If the puzzle is long and gives you a lot of information, it is most likely not very dif cult

c At a very basic level, Puzzles are about nding out some information which is not given basis the information given to you.
Therefore, if a lot of information is already available, it becomes easier for you to identify the missing information.
a
Tip 3 - If there are multiple parameters in the puzzle, the dif culty generally goes up
g
In a linear arrangement puzzle consisting of 10 people sitting in a line, if I also include the colour of their shirts and then tell you
m that they are also related and give you information about how they are related to each other - chances are likely that you might
(mailto:?
subject=CONDUIRA's:7
not be able to solve the puzzle in 10 minutes. The dif culty of a puzzle is not just dependent on the logical dif culty but also the
amount of time you need to invest into the puzzle.

Tip 4 - If there are numerical parameters, trust me, the puzzle is dif cult

If the puzzle is about 8 people sitting in a circle and their ages are also given with clues saying that the difference of ages of A and
B is equal to the sum of the ages of C and D, you can safely decide not to attempt that puzzle. There are scenarios where the hints
tell you that of the 8 ages, three are prime numbers and the others are not. It is better to stay away from these puzzles as they are
major time-suckers.

Tip 5 - If there is additional information being given in the questions, the puzzle could be time taking

Additional information being given in the individual questions suggests that the information given in the puzzle is incomplete and
therefore multiple possibilities exist. Further, every question might require you to take the additional information and solve the
puzzle again. It is just not worth your time. In some cases, you can identify these puzzles by looking for Cannot be Determined as
one of the options. As a rule, a puzzle with incomplete information leading to multiple possibilities is generally bad news and you
should avoid attempting it.

Tip 6 - Multiple Directions, Shortest Path etc.

A circular arrangement based puzzle with few people facing the center of the circle and other facing away or a linear arrangement
based puzzle where people are facing different directions - these are slightly dif cult puzzles. Given the recent increase in the
dif culty levels of the puzzles seen in the Banking exams, you might have to end up attempting these puzzles. However, in
addition to the direction, if one more additional parameter is given, it might increase the dif culty of the puzzle further and you
might not be able to solve it in less than 10 minutes.
Tip 7 - New Pattern /New Model Puzzles

You might come across puzzles that you might not have seen commonly in the practice tests - Truth / Lie, Graph-based or even
Games & Tournament based Puzzles are not the most common kind of varieties that you might expect to see in the Banking
Exams. If you come across one of these varieties and if you have not seen such models earlier, h(tpdon't ilecbe
s/:wwwc.onduraionn .om/) an Einstein and start
researching the puzzles in the exam. Ignore that puzzle and search for an easier puzzle to attempt.

Bottom line - Every exam consists of both dif cult and easy puzzles. Our Job is to ensure that we are staying away from the
dif cult ones. The faster you can identify a puzzle is dif cult, better are your chances of doing well. Even during your practice
sessions, keep asking yourself if you have been able to identify all the easy puzzles in the test. You can make two kinds of mistakes
- either you ended up attempting a puzzle you SHOULD NOT have attempted or you ended up NOT attempting a puzzle that you
SHOULD have attempted - both of them are avoidable mistakes if you put in the right kind of effort into your practice sessions. At
Conduira Online, we ensure that our analysis helps you to identify these kinds of mistakes.

These are a few tips that will ensure that you are choosing the right puzzles to attempt. To reiterate, in an exam where the focus is
on speed, identifying the right puzzles to attempt can make all the difference between success and failure.
