Answer the Following:

Q1. Derive the equation of motion for a particle in cylindrical coordinates using Lagrange’s
equation (only). 12 M

Q2. A machine part of mass 50 Kg is supported by a spring of rate 30 N/m and a viscous
damper of effect 22% of the critical value. Determine the damping constant of the
damper. What are the values of critical damping rate and damping factor? Determine also
the frequencies of free damped and undamped vibrations. What is the value of the
logarithm decrement? Find out the time taken to complete six cycles and the amplitude of
vibration at the sixth cycle, if the initial amplitude is 40 mm. 5M

Q3. Using D’’ Alembert’s principle and principle of Virtual work determine the equation of
motion and natural frequency of vibration assuming pure rolling for the system shown in
figure Q3. 7M

Q4. Determine the equivalent system hence determine the equation of motion and also
the natural time period for the system shown in figure Q4. Assume same modulus of
elasticity for the bar and rod supporting the mass of E. 10 M

Q5. Determine the equivalent mass of the three lumped mass system shown in figure Q5
at the point B. 6M
