Q1. Derive the equations of motion for the Trailer-Compound pendulum system shown in figure 1 using
Lagrange’s equation. 14 M

Q3. Two railway cars of masses 𝒎𝟏 and 𝒎𝟐 are connected by a spring of stiffness 𝒌 as shown in figure 2
below. Determine the responses of the two cars using Laplace transform method if the car of mass 𝒎𝟏
is subjected to a an impulse of 𝑭𝟎 𝜹(𝒕). System is undergoing forced vibration due to the force 𝑭𝟎 𝜹(𝒕)
applied to car of mass 𝒎𝟏 with zero initial conditions. 20 M

Q4. Determine the free vibration frequencies of the three story building shown in figure 3 due to side
way motion as shown. The three floors are each of mass 𝒎 and has 𝟏𝟐 identical elastic columns of each
‘𝑳’ length. Bending stiffness of each column is 𝑬𝑰. If each column is two cantilevers joined at the centre

Q5. (a) A 𝟏𝟎 𝒌𝒈 mass is attached to the end of a 𝟏 𝒎 long catlever beam of rectangular cross section

when the forcing frequency is 𝟑 𝒄𝒑𝒔. Determine the young’s modules for the material of the beam. 6 M

(b) A sensor and actuator are attached to a mechanical system in an effort to control any vibrations
