Calculus Applications Project:

AnalyzingAgevs.NumberofJobsheld
For this project, you will collect data relating
age and # of jobs held. You will try several
mathematical models for curve fitting, and takethe
first and second derivatives ofthesemodels. You
will provide a graph foreachmodel. Thenyouwill
select the model that you think is the bestfit.

The due datewillbeOct. 23 .

I. Collectdata
You will interview at least 12 or more people
ranging in age from 18to65. Ask each of them
how many jobs they have held so far.
Displaythedata in a chart where x represents
age and y represents the number of jobs held.
II. Usethatdataand enter it in the website:
https://planetcalc.com/5992/
Use the age for the x input and number of jobs for
the y input.
If you use the website I provided you will have a
display similar to the one below; you will need to
go through and enter your own data. Enter ages for
the x data and the number of jobs for the y data.
Remember, you are entering pairs. For example, if
your data were (30,2), (20,4), (53,1) the you would
list for the x

30 20 53 notice there is a space for each point.

And for y

2 4 1  notice that you have to list them in order

to match the way the x values are listed.
In the next part you select which regressions you
want to do; select the first three.

You will want only the first three items checked.

When you hit the orange Calculate button on the

right you will see something similar to this:
The only information you need from this are the
three equations generated from linear, quadratic and
cubic regressions.

Following this you will see the graph of these

generated curves:
III. To turn in: the report

1. Create a table to show your data with x in

order of age one column and the corresponding y
in the other:
I have collected data on the basis of
interviewing around 15 people and collected the
following data -
X Y
18 4
20 3
25 4
36 9
48 10
22 5
25 9
54 10
26 7
65 12
38 9
33 8
26 3
21 3
37 8

2. List the linear regression equation you got

from the website. Explain what the slope means
in terms of age and number of jobs.Explain what
the y intercept means in terms of the number of
jobs when the age is zero.
Answer -

Linear regression equation that is obtained from the website is expressed as

below-

y=0.1870x+0.7739

Here the slope is 0.1870, which means quantum of change in y, due to 1 unit
of change in x. For our data, we can say that the relationship between y and x
are expressed on the basis of slope, which is equals to 0.187. It means that if
age is increased by 1 year, the change in number of job held so far will get
increased by 0.1870.

We have a intercept of 0.7739. Interpreting the intercept in a regression

model. The intercept, which is also termed as constant in interpreted as the
expected mean value of Y(no. of job held) when all X(age of person) = 0, i.e.
if sometime X = 0, the intercept is simply the expected mean value of Y.
However, if X can never be = 0, there won't be any interest in the intercept,
i.e. in that case intercept won't tell you anything about the relationship
between X and Y. So, in this case intercept of 0.7739 is the mean value of no.
of jobs held when the age of person is 0.

3. Then take the derivative. Set it equal to zero

and find the critical points; if it does not
exist then state that. Take the second
derivative.
Our equation is
y=0.1870x+0.7739

So, f'(y) = 0.187, i.e. no critical points exist in

this case, since it's a linear regression equation.
Linear regression equation just have a slope and no
critical points. So, in our case, slope = 0.1870
without any critical points.
Second derivative of linear regression equation -
f''(y) = 0
4. For the quadratic and cubic equations list the
equations, take their first and second
derivatives.

Equations are shown as below for and cubic equations-

Quadratic regression
y=−0.0035x^2+0.4635x+−3.9510
Equation i written into simplified form

First derivatives for quadratic regression-

Second derivatives for quadratic regression-

Cubic regression
y=0.0001x^3+−0.0171x^2+0.9757x+−9.7864

The equation is re-written in simplified form-

First derivative of Cubic regression -

Second Derivative of Cubic regression -

5. For the quadratic only find the critical points
for both derivatives. For the cubic find the
critical points only for the second derivative.

Critical points are the points, where the function is defined and its derivative is set
to zero or undefined.

We have our first derivative for Quadratic equation-

= 927/2000 - 7x/1000
or, -0.007x + 0.4635

Setting our first derivative = 0

We get,
-0.007x+0.4635=0

Therefore,

X = 0.4365/0.007 = 66.21

We have our second derivative for Quadratic equation-

= -7/1000

6. Include a graph of all three original

regression equations. For the quadratic, look
at the critical approximate location of the
critical point from the first derivative. Write
about what you think the graph is doing there
(just a sentence or two). Now find the
approximate location of the critical point for
the second derivative and state what you think
the graph is doing there. Finally, do the same
thing for the second derivative of the cubic
graph.
7. State which of the three equations you have,
linear, quadratic or cubic, best fits the
original data and why you think this.
8. Look under the Project button in Canvas to
submit the project.
