ANDH R A P R A D E S H J O U R N E YS 3
MESSAGE

At the onset of 2018, I would like to introduce all of you to Andhra

Pradesh Journeys—a magazine that embodies the true spirit of Unbound
Tourism. Thanks to the untiring efforts of our dynamic and visionary
Chief Minister, our state has set ambitious goals for developing as a
major tourist hotspot.

Andhra Pradesh has a lot to offer for everyone—be it the millennial

generation traveller seeking an exciting adventure, a family of four
looking for a placid beachside holiday or the retired pensioner on a quest
for some soul searching. Right from sandy beaches on the serene shores
of the Bay of Bengal to the holy Buddhist sites and Hindu temples,
Andhra Pradesh offers a plethora of options to choose from. A jewel to
this crown is the warmth and hospitality you will experience by the
people of my state. Rest assured that in due course of time the question
will move from ‘Why AP?’ to ‘Where in AP?’

The Andhra Pradesh Journeys magazine is, therefore, our attempt to

answer both these questions and help you make an informed choice
about AP as your next holiday destination.

I welcome one and all, from India and abroad, to come and experience
Andhra Pradesh. I am certain that your experience here will leave you
wanting and make you come back for more!

MUST DO
The Ideal If you are in Andhra Pradesh
during the pleasant winter

Holiday season, you must find time

to enjoy the finest travel
experiences the state has to offer.

Destination Illustrated by Pooja Sethi Gautam

1 CAVING IN ANDHRA PRADESH

The Belum caves are the largest cave system
open to the public in India. Steeped in mystery,
the caves descend deep underground with a
rippling stream flowing through serenely. The
hanging stalactite deposits give the caves an
eerie beauty. Many years ago, these caves were
used by Buddhist and Jain monks for meditation.
A 40-foot statue of Lord Buddha has been
installed outside the caves in commemoration of
their legacy. If you’re a history buff or a caving
enthusiast, this is the destination for you!

2 SRISAILAM TIGER RESERVE

The Nagarjunsagar—Srisailam Tiger
Reserve is the largest tiger reserve in
India and spreads over five districts. In
addition to tigers, the sanctuary is home
to panthers, leopards and crocodiles. The
Krishna river flows through the sanctuary,
adding a touch of blue to the lush
greenery of the area’s winding gorges
and rugged hills.

3 RAYALASEEMA CUISINE
Deep in the southwest region
of Andhra Pradesh lies the
culinary haven of Rayalaseema.
The region is famous for its
traditional delicacies that are
an absolute must-have for every
tourist passing through. From
a tasty vada cooked using rice
flour and peanuts to a spicy
curry made of country chicken,
the food of Rayalaseema is a
mouthwatering experience that
you should try this winter.

6 ANDH R A P R A D E S H J O U R N E YS
4 VISTADOME RIDE
Araku is a hill station surrounded by the
thick green forests of the Eastern Ghats. The
Vistadome coach is the latest facility for you to
experience the beauty of its jungles. The luxury
coach has a transparent acrylic ceiling and a
large observation window, allowing you to fully
take in the lush greenery around. Just sit back
and enjoy the picturesque views awaiting you at
every turn. Don’t forget to take pictures.

5 HOUSEBOAT CRUISE AT DINDI

The lush greenery of the Konaseema
region is best enjoyed from the deck of a
luxurious houseboat. Spend a day leisurely
drifting down the Dindi river and enjoying
the picturesque landscape. The bright green
shrubbery on the banks and the serenity
of the river make this a perfect holiday
experience for those looking for a break
from fast-paced city life.

6 SCUBA DIVING IN VIZAG

During the winter, the waters
off Vizag are an ideal place to
experience the thrill of scuba
diving. Through this season, the
sea is calm and clear enabling
you to catch a glimpse of several
exotic marine species such as
electric rays and coral blankets.
There are instructors present
who can train and accompany

divers. This is the perfect holiday
destination if you’re a fun-loving
adventure seeker.
Every year, this region enjoys colourful festivities
during Mahasivrati. The main attraction of the
festival is a 60- to 70-foot Prabhalu, a tower-like
structure made out of bamboo and decorated
with coloured cloth and paper. These bright
structures are hoisted onto bullock carts and
drawn up the hill. The shining colours and the
beautiful temple make the Kotappakonda fair
an ideal destination for spiritual travellers.

8 BIRDWATCHING AT PULICAT
Hugging the sea on the southern border of
Andhra Pradesh, the Pulicat lake is the second
largest brackish water ecosystem in India. The large
number of flamingoes and other rare birds that
travel here during winter, make the place a haven for
birdwatchers and wildlife photographers. The lake
is a perfect getaway for those who love birds, water,
and the serenity of nature.

LAMBASINGI VISAKHAPATNAM
Lambasingi is just about your only chance to witness snowfall in South
India! A delightful getaway throughout the year, this small village in
the Chintapalli Mandal of Visakhapatnam experiences sub-zero degree
temperatures and chilly winds in winter, with occasional snow in
January. Located 1000 metres above sea level and amidst thick forests,
the village offers misty mornings, cloud-kissed coffee, paddy and
pepper fields, picturesque Thajangi reservoir and Kothapally Falls, and
warm, indigenous tribes. A must-to-do here is a walk down the Ghat

A highlight of the evening ritual is the colourful
Kuchipudi performance by young dancers.

An important festival that

takes place at the confluence
is Krishna Pushkaralu
occuring every 12 years.
TRAVEL TIP
Reach the place
at least an hour before the aarti
commences since the spiritual
experience is preceded with music
and dance performances. There is
the Kuchipudi dance by students of
acclaimed teachers, vendors selling
street food and local toys, and
people taking pictures of this
magnificent spectacle.

IT IS A WIDELY KNOWN FACT THAT WE,

THE INDIAN PEOPLE, revere nature. Thus, one finds
evening aartis being performed at many of the scared spots
on major rivers of the country. And so is it in Andhra Pradesh.
The Godavari, also known as Dakshin Ganga, merges with the
Krishna river at Ibrahimpatnam, on the outskirts of Vijayawada.
This confluence is known as Pavitra Sangamam, and the area
has recently been developed with a beautiful ghat and a floating
platform where priests offer not one but nine aartis. The
25-minute religious ritual starts with Pancha aarti and proceeds
to Chandra aarti, Surya aarti, Simha aarti, Kumbha aarti,
Nakshatra aarti, Nandi aarti, Naaga aarti and Omkaara aarti.
The unobstructed view of the river, reverberating chants of the
priests combined with the beautifully decked platform lit with
LED lights makes for a memorable experience. —Shibani Bawa

The coffee plantations, rich and fecund, have
been harvested by the tribal farmers for almost
70 years. It’s what the valley has become known
for, its reputation as a gourmet coffee brand
percolating its strong flavours all the way to the

But it’s not all there is to sample in this lush

Apart from the splendid natural beauty, a factor
that ensures tourist numbers to Araku all year
long is its ethnic tribal culture. With 19 indigenous
tribes, including the Porga, Bagat, Gadaba, Jatapa,
Mali, Savara and Valmiki still living in the vicinity,
the valley retains its centuries-old traditions and
folklore. Traditional dance forms like Dhimsa
and Mayuri, performed by 10-odd tribal women
(mostly), celebrate almost everything from the
onset of monsoon to the simple toils of daily life.
The Araku Tribal Museum is the perfect
destination for an insight into tribal life, including
intricate jewellery displays and production
techniques, a look at the exquisite clothing designs
that are unique to the tribes, plus a close up look at the
simplicity of their daily lives.
A ‘must do’, is to indulge in some of the delicious local
cuisine, most especially the legendary bamboo chicken, a
dish you’ll find steaming away at most roadsides.
With such rich pickings on its doorstep it’s no surprise
that Araku is fast becoming a haven as a glamping (luxury
camping) retreat with a calendar of new and exciting events
luring thrill-seekers and nature lovers alike. None could be
more apt a way of summarising the future of Araku, than its
hot air balloon festival.

ARAKU BALLOON FESTIVAL

Organised by Andhra Pradesh Tourism, in association with
Sky Waltz and E Factor, the first edition of the Araku Balloon
Festival took place from November 14-16, 2017. The three-day
extravaganza saw 16 balloons from 13 different countries take
passengers on silent, cloud-bound journeys across the
majesty of the valley. Those lucky enough to attend were
treated to luxury tents pitched in the valley for a unique
