I welcome you to the first edition of Andhra Pradesh Journeys, the tourism
magazine of the sunrise state of Andhra Pradesh.

Andhra Pradesh is one of the most naturally endowed and culturally rich
parts of India which has got a large number of high-potential tourism
destinations with multifarious possibilities of experiential enrichment.

Andhra Pradesh Journeys is a beautifully packaged magazine and you will

discover Andhra Pradesh differently after going through the contents of
this well-presented documentation of tourism possibilities in the state.
This magazine with its extremely informative content will be useful for
domestic and international tourists both in terms of providing abundant

1 CAVING IN ANDHRA PRADESH

The Belum caves are the largest cave system
open to the public in India. Steeped in mystery,
the caves descend deep underground with a
rippling stream flowing through serenely. The
hanging stalactite deposits give the caves an
eerie beauty. Many years ago, these caves were
used by Buddhist and Jain monks for meditation.
A 40-foot statue of Lord Buddha has been
installed outside the caves in commemoration of
their legacy. If you’re a history buff or a caving
enthusiast, this is the destination for you!

2 SRISAILAM TIGER RESERVE

The Nagarjunsagar—Srisailam Tiger
Reserve is the largest tiger reserve in
India and spreads over five districts. In
addition to tigers, the sanctuary is home
to panthers, leopards and crocodiles. The
Krishna river flows through the sanctuary,
adding a touch of blue to the lush
greenery of the area’s winding gorges
and rugged hills.

Every year, this region enjoys colourful festivities
during Mahasivrati. The main attraction of the
festival is a 60- to 70-foot Prabhalu, a tower-like
structure made out of bamboo and decorated

structures are hoisted onto bullock carts and
drawn up the hill. The shining colours and the
beautiful temple make the Kotappakonda fair
an ideal destination for spiritual travellers.

8 BIRDWATCHING AT PULICAT
Hugging the sea on the southern border of
Andhra Pradesh, the Pulicat lake is the second
largest brackish water ecosystem in India. The large
number of flamingoes and other rare birds that
travel here during winter, make the place a haven for
birdwatchers and wildlife photographers. The lake
is a perfect getaway for those who love birds, water,
and the serenity of nature.

Lambasingi is just about your only chance to witness snowfall in South
India! A delightful getaway throughout the year, this small village in
the Chintapalli Mandal of Visakhapatnam experiences sub-zero degree
temperatures and chilly winds in winter, with occasional snow in
January. Located 1000 metres above sea level and amidst thick forests,

NOVEMBER 3-5
Believed to be the
biggest craft event in
South India, this event
was planned to create
awareness on Andhra’s
rich legacy in handicrafts

a platform to renowned
designers and artisans
to discuss trends and
create opportunities.

were glittering fashion

HOT AIR BALLOON FESTIVAL, ARAKU VALLEY | NOVEMBER 14-16

The grey skies of Araku Valley embraced colours in
November, as hot air balloons from around the world
floated over the valley. The first Araku Balloon Festival
hosted experienced pilots from 13 countries. Along with
flights and tethers, the festival helped tourists visit Borra
caves, Tribal Museum, and Chaparai and other picturesque
waterfalls of Andhra Pradesh. .

ocated on the banks of the river
Varaha, a hill stream that makes a
stunning descent from the Eastern
Ghats, Etikoppaka may seem
like a sleepy little town at first glance.
Unlike its image, the hamlet boasts a
flourishing cottage industry with almost
250 artisan families busy producing
wooden toys that have recently earned
the coveted Geographical Indication
(GI) status. The GI tag means that
only those residing inside the specified
geographic territory are allowed to
use the popular product name, in this
case—Etikoppaka toys. In plain words,
this means that the exclusivity of the
local craftsmen is maintained, and
the 400-year-old art form has earned
enough recognition for it to continue

flourishing despite modern-day
competition.
THE BEAUTY
Etikoppaka toys may be described as
wooden toys with a smooth finish and
earthy colours. Although they don’t
usually display intricate carvings,
their beauty lies in the simplicity
of their design. The most popular
traditional designs include the veena—
the musical instrument, figurines of a
mother and child, various birds and, of
course, Hindu deities, especially Lord
Ganesha. Utility items such as boxes,
a set of play size cooking utensils,
candle stands, vermilion boxes, small
tops and table lamps have also been
very much in demand.
THE PROCESS
As with anything else, seeing the
process of creation enhances its appeal
as well as value for the beholder. We
were mesmerised with the way small
pieces of locally available softwood,
Ankudi Karra, are carved into varying
sizes of oval, round and even spiral
pieces, smoothened along with
the process of carving, and almost
simultaneously filled in with lacquer
coloured with natural dyes, making
these toys completely eco-friendly.
Lac, the colourless resinous secretion
of insects, is blended with natural dyes

The final finish includes assembling
the various parts of the toy and some

decorative paint work to achieve the
desired look.
CONTEMPORARY DESIGNS
The traditional simple, smooth
finish lends itself very well to these
contemporary creations. National
Institute of Fashion Technology and the
National Institute of Design have been
involved in designing and developing
Etikoppaka toys for a larger market.
The recent years have, thus, seen
newer designs such as Buddha seated
in a meditative pose, Pinocchio-type
keychains, ear rings, bangles and
Christmas ornaments. The Santa Claus
and snowman made in Etikopakka style
are particularly attractive.
NATIONAL RECOGNITION
The outstanding skills of artists like
S. Chinnayachari have further added
value to the heritage toy-making
industry of Andhra Pradesh. Recipient
of the National Award for Lacquer
Work in 2005, Chinnayachari excels
in miniature craftsmanship; his
micro-miniatures are amongst the
world’s smallest and not always for
sale. His creations such as the 1.2 mm
miniature wooden chessboard or
the 1.2 mm artwork of Ram Sita
Pattabhishekam set on half a poppy
seed are absolutely stunning.

Despite the effort that goes into
creating these beautiful toys, they are
very nominally priced with a starting
range of `50, going up to around
`3,000. Not only do they make great
souvenirs and gifts to carry back, but
also artefacts to adorn your home.

KONDAPALLI TOYS
When you visit the 14th century
Kondapalli Fort, located on a
hill top in the Eastern Ghats, you
will certainly notice a few shops
selling locally produced wooden
toys. These toys are made in the
Kondapalli village and exported
to various parts of the globe. At
the village, one can see craftsmen
carving softwood, locally known
as Tella Poniki, using techniques
that are passed down through
generations. Although some
modern designs are visible in the
shops, the traditional ones are the
real gems. Dashavtara, representing
the ten incarnations of Lord Vishnu,
is one of the most popular designs.
Other hot sellers are bullock carts
laden with paddy-filled sacks,
figurines of local villagers, as
well as a beautifully carved
marriage procession.

The Godavari, also known as Dakshin Ganga, merges with the
Krishna river at Ibrahimpatnam, on the outskirts of Vijayawada.
This confluence is known as Pavitra Sangamam, and the area
has recently been developed with a beautiful ghat and a floating
platform where priests offer not one but nine aartis. The
25-minute religious ritual starts with Pancha aarti and proceeds
to Chandra aarti, Surya aarti, Simha aarti, Kumbha aarti,
Nakshatra aarti, Nandi aarti, Naaga aarti and Omkaara aarti.
The unobstructed view of the river, reverberating chants of the
priests combined with the beautifully decked platform lit with

destiny. Proof of such strident ingenuity can be found in any
one of the 58 tunnels or 84 bridges you’ll cross en route to

Whether you trace the tracks of the rail or find your way
by road, all routes to Araku lead you to a valley of many great
possibilities with many a valley fold or brook still waiting
to be explored. Surrounded by the forests of Anantagiri and
Sunkrimetta, the verdant valley is watched over by the vast
hues of plum of the Raktkonda, Chitamogondi and Galikonda
mountains. A little chill in the air and the sleepy hamlet curls
up inside the yellow blanket of niger flowers with patchworks
magical experience, transforming Araku into a mystical land,
its tincture the aroma of coffee, the scent of wild flowers and
the sod of damp earth.
 The coffee plantations, rich and fecund, have
been harvested by the tribal farmers for almost
70 years. It’s what the valley has become known
for, its reputation as a gourmet coffee brand
percolating its strong flavours all the way to the
pavement cafes of Paris. 
But it’s not all there is to sample in this lush
valley and once you’ve had your caffeine hit, you
could do worse than make a beeline for the local
aperies and sample some of the nectar rich honey.
Burn off the sugars underground at the close by
Borra Caves—a complex of 150-million-year-old
stunning stalagmite and stalactite caves that
are the biggest, and most impressive, in India.
Once you’re done with subterranea, head up to
Galikondalu—it’s Visakhapatnam’s highest viewing
point at 5,000 metres and wedged firmly into the
Ananthagiri range. On the snaking ride back down,
there’s a host of picturesque waterfalls that line

the hills and valleys and feed the streams. 

Apart from the splendid natural beauty, a factor
that ensures tourist numbers to Araku all year
long is its ethnic tribal culture. With 19 indigenous
tribes, including the Porga, Bagat, Gadaba, Jatapa,
Mali, Savara and Valmiki still living in the vicinity,
the valley retains its centuries-old traditions and
folklore. Traditional dance forms like Dhimsa
and Mayuri, performed by 10-odd tribal women
(mostly), celebrate almost everything from the
onset of monsoon to the simple toils of daily life. 
The Araku Tribal Museum is the perfect
destination for an insight into tribal life, including
intricate jewellery displays and production
techniques, a look at the exquisite clothing designs
that are unique to the tribes, plus a close up look at the
simplicity of their daily lives. 
A ‘must do’, is to indulge in some of the delicious local
cuisine, most especially the legendary bamboo chicken, a
dish you’ll find steaming away at most roadsides. 
With such rich pickings on its doorstep it’s no surprise
that Araku is fast becoming a haven as a glamping (luxury
camping) retreat with a calendar of new and exciting events
luring thrill-seekers and nature lovers alike. None could be
more apt a way of summarising the future of Araku, than its
hot air balloon festival.

ARAKU BALLOON FESTIVAL

Organised by Andhra Pradesh Tourism, in association with
Sky Waltz and E Factor, the first edition of the Araku Balloon
Festival took place from November 14-16, 2017. The three-day
extravaganza saw 16 balloons from 13 different countries take
passengers on silent, cloud-bound journeys across the
majesty of the valley. Those lucky enough to attend were
treated to luxury tents pitched in the valley for a unique
glamping experience, local food, and culture of the
unexplored region.

Andhra Pradesh has some of the oldest
and most intricately carved temples,
pristine waterfalls, diverse wildlife and
clear sandy beaches. The state is famous
for the great Tirupathi temple, so that’s
the one place I would recommend
travellers to visit. In fact, whatever I am
today, I owe it to Lord Venkateshwara.
The temple’s majestic appearance and
architectural beauty is captivating and
has an aura of piousness. If travellers are
short on time, they may opt for special
entry darshan or Seeghra Darshanam
and even book tickets online.

If you are travelling to Andhra Pradesh,
do not miss Narsipatnam and the
entire Krishna—Godavari belt, which is
mesmerising and culturally rich. If you
drive about 31 kilometres north from
Narsipatnam, there’s a beautiful place
called Lambasingi that is often called
the Kashmir of Andhra Pradesh, as it
experiences snowfall during winter.
Another good location for a trip is Dindi-
By the Godavari. A perfect weekend
getaway, this resort has a scenic location
with beautifully lined up coconut trees
and virgin backwaters.

recommend exploring Andhra Pradesh’s
history and architecture. Begin with
the half-a-dozen forts in the state, like
Kondapalli, Chandragiri and Adoni.
Read about them, go around and
explore, as this won’t take more than
four days. Another interesting chapter
that one must explore is the era of
Krishnadevaraya, an emperor of the
Vijayanagara Empire. The prehistoric
monuments on Pandavulametta hillocks
in Srikakulam is another hidden gem.
