STANDARDS

IPTV is Ready to Bridge the Chasm

All dates are intended for planning purposes only and are subject to change.
Industry Standards

ƒ Fully Specified
• All components necessary for two parties to interoperate
ƒ Developed by an open process

ƒ Supported by Interoperability and Testing activities

• Test Plans
• Certification, etc.

ƒ Provides “Best of Breed” Solutions for Majority

Adoption
• Standards allow efficient markets for system components
All dates are intended for planning purposes only and are subject to change.
IPTV and Standardization

ƒ IPTV uses Standards

• MPEG2, MPEG4/H.264, MPEG2-TS IP, UDP, RTP, TCP, etc.
• ADSL2+, VDSL, DHCP, PPPoE, ATM, 64/65 coding, VLANs, DSCP, …
• WT-101, ETSI TS 102 034 v1.1.1, …
• Java, J2EE, EAS, CableLabs 1.1, …
• Y.1540/1541, WT-126, …

ƒ Sometimes there are holes

• DRM
• V-Model

ƒ Sometimes its just a matter of picking which one!

All dates are intended for planning purposes only and are subject to change.
About the IIF

ƒ Established after ATIS BoD directed investigation

found need for focus on IPTV standards
• Identify IPTV ‘ecosystem’ requirements
• Identify specifications for interfaces/components
– Pick which standards to use
– Develop specifications or request the development of specifications
where they do not exist
• Establish test plans for interoperability testing

ƒ Initial meeting September 2005

ƒ Current membership includes (44 companies):
• Service Providers
• Equipment Suppliers (Access, Aggregation, Video,
Testing)
• Software Vendors (Middleware, Service Assurance)
All dates are intended for planning purposes only and are subject to change.

IIF Goals

Long-Term: to fully specify all appropriate interfaces in the

IPTV architecture, and to identify and specify metrics
that are appropriate to measure the quality of IPTV
service across those interfaces.

Near-Term: Work from Top-Down:

1. Develop Architecture Requirements and Reference Model
2. Address Interoperability issues in Content Security (DRM)
3. Identify QoS Measurement Points, Metrics and Methods

ƒ Organized in Task Forces aligned with near-term goals

ƒ Issue Oriented – can take on new issues
ƒ Working with other SDOs to coordinate efforts
All dates are intended for planning purposes only and are subject to change.
Task Force Work Areas

ƒ Architecture
• Requirements (Scope) and Roadmap – March/April 2006
– Roadmap schedules future specification work
• Architecture Specifications (Target October 2006)
ƒ Digital Rights Management
• Content Security Requirements (March/April 2006)
ƒ Quality of Service Metrics (Target October 2006)
• End to End Metrics
• E-model equivalent (V-model)
• Quality of Experience
ƒ Testing work to Follow

Network Evolution to Packet

ƒ Two key drivers for service providers

• Increase revenue
– New video opportunities
– Expanded broadband opportunities
• Decrease operational cost
– Eliminate multiple redundant networks
– Optimize service delivery

ADTRAN and IPTV
ƒ ADTRAN’s Focus is Access
• Electrical and Optical Access Equipment
• Wireless Access Infrastructure
• IPTV is one of several applications enabled by access equipment

ƒ ADTRAN Involvement in IPTV service initiatives

• Experience both as IPTV lead and a component vendor
• In both cases, lack of standards has caused difficulties
– Increased system integration time -- SI has to provide specs
– Reduced choice in system components
– Lack of component level testing/certification leads to “finger-pointing”

ƒ Looking for IIF work to provide a standard for IPTV

• Allows the industry to coalesce around a single architecture
• Increased choice of components
• Specification and testing for components allows reduced system integration time
• Provides scale and cost reduction needed for IPTV to bridge the “chasm” and become
a mainstream application

IPTV Interoperability Forum (IIF)

Mission Statement: The IIF enables the interoperability,

interconnection, and implementation of IPTV systems/services
by developing ATIS standards and facilitating related technical
activities. This forum places an emphasis on North American
and ATIS Member Company needs in coordination with other
regional and international standards development
organizations.

The scope of the work in the IIF includes the following areas:
ƒ Coordinate standards activities that relate to IPTV technologies. This includes
providing a liaison function between the various Standards Development
Organizations (SDOs) and Industry Forums that are each working on important
components of IPTV, but may not have visibility to other aspects of the application.
ƒ Develop interoperability agreements, technical reports, or other types of ATIS
standards where appropriate.
ƒ Provide a venue for interoperability activities.
ƒ Provide a venue for the assessment of IPTV issues in the context of NGN directions
All dates are intended for planning purposes only and are subject to change.
