*Separately mention all the assumptions/equations/symbols used

Problem 1
Check and state whether the signals are periodic or not. If periodic determine the period.
1. sin (− πx + 1)
2. 2 · sin (3πx) cos (3πx + π) + 5
3. exp (− πx + 1)
4. 2 cos2 (− 2πx) + 5

Problem 2
1. Give an example(mathematical representation) for each of the following and draw the
same functions.
(a) odd symmetric function
(b) even symmetric function
(c) even half wave symmetric function
2. Derive fourier series coefficients of an odd half wave symmetric function f(t).

Problem 3
Sketch and compute Fourier series coefficients for the following functions
(a) Periodic function with period T: F (t) = AT
t f or 0 < t < T
(b) Periodic function with period 2: f (t) = −2 |t − .5| + 1 f or − .5 ≤ t ≤ 1.5

spectra i.e,

(a) plot the coefficients w.r.t ak

(b) plot the coefficients w.r.t bk

Problem 5
Suppose we have a an inverting switch for DC-AC conversion working at 60Hz. The DC
input has power A2 . The output signal has no sinusoidal coefficients(bk ) and average
value of the signal is zero. The cosine coefficients(ak = 4A sin(kπ/2)

, k 6= 0.

(a) Draw the AC output

(b) Compute the first 2 term, 3 term, 4 term approximation error. You can give the
MSE value w.r.t. original signal.
(c) Where you see maximum errors between the original signal and the FS approxi-
mation?

(a) Compute the Fourier series representation of the signal.

(b) Compute the Fourier series representation using (a) if you move the signal by 1
in horizontal direction .
(c) Compute the Fourier series representation using (a) if you make shift the origin
upward by .5.

*Hint: horizontal shift by replace t by t+shift and vertical shift changes average value.
