Observing Behavior

I conducted my observation in a grocery store also known as Puregold Guiguinto. I alloted 15

minutes to observe the whole place. There are few people in the place which made it easier to
observe the place. I had a difficult time observing the behavior of people. These are the reasons
why. First, it is because I have no idea what to observe. There are no distinct elaboration of the
task given. It is a vague topic that requires scientific methods to analyze the nature of people’s
behavior. I have meager knowledge regarding the behavior of people. Second, people are
suspiciously looking at me. They are beginning to question my gesture towards their presence. I
was caught up between staring and pretending to purchase any product I pass by. Lastly, I get
paranoid when I am alone in public. I developed a sense of anxiety, thoughts including maybe
someone will grab me violently, maybe someone will steal my belongings, maybe my actions are
inappropriate in the place I am in or maybe will take advantage of my innocence like budol budol
gang.

Nevertheless, I observed the behavior of people according to what I know, what I limited myself
to be in public and what I can. Most of the consumers tend to have their own path in picking up
their list of groceries. There are several behaviors that I discovered. First, when a consumer buys
a product he/she looks at the brand and the price immediately. Then, compare the price of the
product to other brands. Second, a consumer has a written list of what to buy in the store. They
constantly checks if they had put it in their basket already. Third, most of the consumers have
developed a fondness over promos section in the grocery store. They tend to evaluate the discounts
and the brand name of the product. Fourth, some consumers ask the assistance of the staff. They
mostly ask the product they want to find, stocks of product they want to buy or the price of the
product. Fifth, consumers are often fixing their grocery basket. They either try to remember the
things they will purchase or categorizing their grocery basket into sections such as hygiene kits in
the sides and foods in the other sides. Lastly, most of the consumers are hell-bent in analyzing the
ingredients of the products they want to buy. If they have a companion with them, they usually
address their concerns with each other.

Each individual has different ways in purchasing a product. They have unique and strategic ways
in responding to their wants and needs. Thus, there are different reasons why they purchase their
chosen products. However, it requires intensive research. In my observation, people have
numerous ways to deal with a social norm. I did not only learn from the people I observed, I also
learn from the way I reacted to a public place.
