See me ride a Scooter!

October 2019 Teacher Liz

Tim, when we went outside today, I observed you as you attempted to ride the
scooter.
As I watched u could see you were challenged physically as your foot pushed, the
other foot moved too and then you struggled with the balance. I saw the intense
concentration you have for this task. I watched you as you tried over & over to cor-
rect your balance. You knew what you needed to do and knew what it looked like
but it just wasn't working for you. I cam along beside you and tried show you how to
place you feet and push off one foot, I even pushed you with both feet on the scoot-
er for a bit so you could feel the balance and movement. I Rode the scooter for you
so you could again see an example of how one foot stays on the scooter and one
pushes on the ground.
 Strong muscles to push yourself around
 Balance
 Crossing midlines
 Spatial awareness—of where the scooter will & wont fit.
 Force & motion working theories—just like how you discovered that its faster
on a slope
 Sharing and other relationship skills
 Dramatic play scenes– negotiation of rules, communication, making links to
adults world
 Independence
 Determination
 Achievement
 Assessing your own development—being proud of your achievement, showing
us what is important to you
Tim, you didn't quite achieve your goal of riding a scooter independently today, but
you learned about setting yourself a goal, sourcing help and about balance and
movement. I love that you remained calm even though it can be frustrating when
you want to do something & its not working! I love that you showed patience as the
children and I showed you how to ride the scooter. Tim I will keep observing you
and helping you with the scooter, achieving goals can be a long process and I know
that you were self motivated and you will revisit this and in no time you will be off
and zooming around the playground!
Marsha Allah Tim!
