Making soap out of guava leaf extract

Abstract

Guava leaves in the Myrtle family which contains about one hundred species of shrubs.
Nowadays, people are focusing in herbal plants especially those who are common in the
environment. Guava plant (psidium guajava Linn) is good for treating and healing wounds and
other skin infections. This experiment aims to make a healthy and effective soap out of guava
leaf extract, and to prove that herbal plants like guava leaves can cure skin disorders like acne
that is irritating for the skin. The the study of guava leaves and getting their extract is often
useful. It has the ability to treat, cure, and disinfect skin disorders and capable of being a herbal
plant for acnes. When the experiment has done, some respondents tested the efficacy of using
the herbal soap in treating acnes, it has a good result on them. I could conclude that the guava
leaf extracted soap can reduce acnes and other skin impurities after several weeks of using it. I
can say that they must continue to use it regularly so that they will achieve their desired result
in using the product. The experiment was done through the use of the materials and procedures
that is needed to perform it.

Introduction

This do it yourself soap will have a smell of guava and even has health benefits for the
skin. Guava plants in the myrtle family which contains about 100 species as tropical properties.
Nowadays people are focusing in herbal plants especially those who are common in the
environment, and one example of it is the guava plant (Psidium Guajava Linn). Guava leaves
contain phytochemicals that are astringent, allowing them to tone and tighten the skin. Guava
leaves can also protect skin against ultraviolent radiation, a major environmental factor in skin
wrinkle formation and hyperpigmentation. There are even research found out that guava leaves'
anti-inflammatory properties can be helpful in treating acne.

Objectives:

 To make a healthy bathing soap infused with guava leaf extract ;and
 To prove that herbal plants like guava leaves can cure or treat skin disorders like acne
that is irritating for the skin.

Hypotheses
Null Hypothesis

The soap can't be effective in treating acne.

Alternative Hypothesis

The extract of the guava leaves can be used in making soaps and can treat acne and other
skin problems or infections because of the antioxidants that the soap contains.

Definition of terms

Anti-inflammatory - used to control or reduce inflammation.

Antioxidant - a substance that is added to food and other products to prevent harmful chemical
reactions in which oxygen is combined with other substances.

Antiseptic - a substance that prevents infection in a wound by killing bacteria.

Astringent - antiseptic properties

Hyperpigmentation - exessively or extremely coloring of people, animal, or plant.

Phytochemicals - a chemical compound (such as beta carotene) occuring naturally in plants.

Methodology

Materials

 One half cup vegetable oil or cooking oil (approximately 300 ml)
 3 tablespoons of NaOH (approximately 15 grams)
 500 ml of water
 250 ml of guava leaf extract
 molder
 beaker
 cloth and
 stirring rod

Procedures
Prepare the stove to be used. Boil guava leaves for 10 minutes (low heat). Separate the
skin from the extract. Put it in a clean container, let it cool and then set aside. Prepare the
sodium hydroxide (NaOH) or lye. Put it in a container. You must use rubber gloves and masks in
dealing with lye and other chemical substances. Put some oil (3 tbsp.) and water (3tbsp.) Mix it
thoroughly. Put the extract of the fruits to the mixture (1/2 tbsp.) Stir the mixture continuously
in a single direction. (Make sure the mixture is viscous).

Results and discussion

The following table shows the results, and ratings of some people who tries to use and observe
this product (Guava leaves extract soap for treating acne).

The eight respondents has different ratings about the result brought by them upon using the
guava leaf extracted soap. Only four of them said that using this soap has an effective result on
them after three weeks, and also four of them said that it is good.

Conclusion

I, therefore conclude that the guava extract soap can reduce acne and other skin impurities.
This is shown in the results by the ratings of the respondents in using the product. The product
really has positive effect on treating acne after how many weeks of using it. Even though some
of the respondents looks dissatisfied but we can say that it has an effect. They just need to
maintain using it regularly to achieve their desired result.

Recommendation

For the researcher, they must keep on improving the product so that they could engage
more people to use it. For the users, they must continue to use the product regularly so that
they will achieved their desired result in using it.
