SECTION 1 INTRODUCTION
The HiRIDE Eductor/Mixing Hopper is unique in the industry due to its multi-zone
mixer design TMD Diffuser. It is offered in three models ranging from a rigidly
mounted eductor to a fully adjustable model whose design permits the eductor
assembly 360 degrees of rotation and 3-inches (7.5 cm.) of vertical travel using
grooved couplings. As a result, it can be placed virtually anywhere near the mixing
area with no hard piping or hot work required. It can easily be installed, de-rigged,
moved and reinstalled by two service personnel.
There are three models of HiRIDE available:
Model Description Main

The MPD Nozzle, developed using CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) modeling,
utilizes a converging body-throat design to generate a fluid jet and vacuum below the
inlet hopper. The geometry ensures proper operation with inlet pressures as low as
20 psi reducing both pump loads and pumping costs. The efficient nozzle design
converts the pressure head to velocity head generating a near perfect vacuum of
26.8 in Hg (90.8 KPa.) at the solids/liquids induction interface. In this void space, first
stage mixing occurs as the induced product is entrained in the motive fluid.
The TMD Diffuser, also developed using CFD modeling, uses unique internal
geometry to create the optimum mixing environment. This is done by creating
multiple low pressure volumes that cause jet degradation and create vortex mixing.

NOTE:
SECTION 3 DESCRIPTION
As noted previously, there are three versions of the HiRIDE Eductor unit. The most
basic configuration is the eductor unit assembly Model 175-EA. This unit is
comprised of a 6-inch fluid eductor with the required inserts, a 4-inch nozzle inlet for
solids induction and a 2 inch nozzle inlet for fluids induction (see figure 3). The two
other configurations couple a mixing hopper and table with the eductor assembly and
are referred to as: model 175-SE (Standard Eductor) and model 175-FE (Flexible
Eductor). Each of these two Eductor/Mixing Hopper assemblies consists of a
stainless steel table surface and hopper mated to the Eductor assembly. The eductor
piping assembly consists of a 4-inch (10 cm.) Butterfly Valve to isolate the solids inlet
along with an MPD Nozzle and TMD Diffuser inserted into a 6-inch pipe section. The
connections are generally made using grooved couplings for ease of access and
maintenance.
The HiRIDE Model 175-EA eductor assembly can be easily installed into a pipeline
with grooved couplings. It can be installed at the outlet to equipment like a Big Bag
Unit, a Sack Slitter, a Surge Tank or other equipment that may supply bulk powdered
chemicals to the system.
The HiRIDE Model 175-SE mixing hopper adds a table and hopper to the eductor
described above. This unit can be used with a simple sack induction system to add
powdered chemicals from the sacks into the drilling fluid stream via the integral
hopper. The piping for this eductor unit is fixed to the table structure and fully
supported by the table itself. This table can be placed inline with the 6 inch drilling
fluid line using 2 grooved couplings as shown. Please note the direction of flow in
this diagram is from right to left.
The HiRIDE Model 175 FE Mixing hopper is the most flexible table assembly on the
market. It allows the eductor to be rotated 360 degrees and has a 3-inch (7.5 cm.)
built-in slip joint for height adjustment as shown in the figure below. This flexibility
allows the Eductor/Mixing Hopper unit to be placed in almost any orientation without
the need to cut and weld on the location. Note: In this case the eductor assembly
is supported by the customers piping and is not directly supported by the
Mixing Hopper table.
Models 175-SE and 175-FE tables measure 39¼-inches high x 29½-inches wide and
42¾-inches long
(99.7 cm. high x 74.9 cm. wide x 108.6 cm. long). The hopper bowl is 24½-inches
(62 cm.) in diameter narrowing to an outlet diameter of 3½ -inches (9 cm.) at a depth
of 15-inches (38 cm.) from the top of the table. The Hopper bowl has a volume of 2
3 3
ft (0.06 m ).
The MPD nozzle constricts the flow from the 6-inch (15 cm.) line to a 1¾-inch (4.4
cm.) diameter outlet orifice in the nozzle via a downstream, inwardly sloping conical
shape. The flow exits the downstream side of the MPD nozzle at high velocity into a
void space. Both the Mixing Hopper and a 2-inch liquid induction line, connect to this
void space through manually operated valves. With either valve open, the high
velocity fluid jet creates a zone of relative low pressure, creating suction and drawing
chemicals into the fluid jet.
Powdered or liquid chemicals drawn into the void space are carried by the high
velocity jet into the TMD diffuser where the geometry promotes turbulence and
generates mixing. Contact between the fluid jet and the inward sloping mouth of the
diffuser creates turbulence in the flow (zones of re-circulation), which facilitate mixing
The HiRIDE unit is to be shipped to the client fully assembled and includes the
following components depending on model selected:
• Table/hopper Assembly
• Mixer body/Vertical Assembly and Butterfly Valve (Details Depend on Model-
Type)
• MPD Nozzle and Nozzle Backing Pipe
• TMD Diffuser and Pipe Body
• Pressure and vacuum gauges (packed loose).
Tools Required:
• One 1¼-inch Wrench or Pneumatic Impact Gun with 1¼-inch Socket
• One 1¼ -inch combination wrench
• One 12-inch Adjustable wrench
Personnel Required:
• Single technician (if forklift/lifting device supplied)
• Two technicians (if forklift/lifting device not supplied)
The HiRIDE Model 175-EA Eductor Assembly can be installed in a 6-inch (15 cm.)
drilling fluid flowline. It is a pipe spool that requires approximately 42.2 inches between
two opposing flanges or grooved couplings.
• Mudflow should be into mouth of MPD nozzle discharging through the smaller
orifice. Confirm flow direction prior to installation.
• MPD nozzle pipe section and outlet of TMD pipe section to be connected to rig
hard pipe via grooved coupling or 150# flanges. Ensure rig survey information
includes type of rig hard pipe connection.
• Ensure all nuts on grooved couplings and flange connections are properly
torqued prior to leak tests.
Note: Alternatively the eductor piping may be fitted with grooved to Flange
adaptors and then the unit may be bolted between flanges. All flanges, if used,
must be installed with gaskets. Each gasket should be lubricated with copper
based lubricant to prevent adhesion of gasket to face of flange.
HiRIDE Model 175-SE unit is requires an opening in the Drilling Fluids line of
approximately 42.2 inches with the two ends grooved to fit grooved couplings.
Drilling fluids piping should be approximately 8-inches from centerline to the
bottom of the table mounting pads. Any variations in height can be
accommodated by adding shims to raise the table assembly.
• It is expected the table will be mounted on a level surface and oriented to
the correct fluid flow direction, as indicated in the drawing (Figure 4).
• Inlet of the MPD nozzle should be oriented downstream of main drilling
fluids line connection (indicated by arrows). Mudflow should be directed
into the 5½-inch (14 cm.) mouth of MPD nozzle discharging through 1¾-
inch (5 cm.) orifice. Confirm flow direction prior to installation.
• The MPD nozzle and TMD diffuser pipe sections are connected to rig hard
pipe via 6-inch (15 cm.) grooved couplings or 150# flanges. Ensure rig
survey information includes type of rig hard pipe connection required.
• Ensure all grooved couplings and flange connections are properly torqued
prior to leak tests and that the nuts are easily accessible with a wrench.
• Check access to the table top to ensure it is ergonomically suitable to the
personnel who will be dumping sacks into the hopper.
HiRIDE Model 175-FE unit is requires an opening in the Drilling Fluids line of
approximately 42.2 inches with the two ends grooved to fit grooved couplings.
The piping centerline elevation can be between 5 and 8-inches from the bottom
of the table mounting pads. Any excess variation with this height can be
accommodated by adding shims to raise the table assembly.
• It is expected the table will be mounted on a level surface. The eductor
piping assembly may be rotated and elevated as necessary to
• Located at the bottom of the Hopper is a 4-inch (10 cm.) butterfly valve
attached via grooved coupling quick connect, Type 78.
• Find the Mixer Body. It will have 5-inch and 2-inch diameter pipe nozzles
protruding. Install the MPD Nozzle by sliding it into the Mixer Body as
shown above. Once fully seated, the MPD nozzle should align flush with
the leading edge of the 5-inch riser pipe and the lip of the nozzle should
be flush with the end of the 6-inch pipe. NOTE: THIS IS THE UPSTREAM
END OF THE EDUCTOR.
• Take a gasket from one of the 6-inch grooved couplings, visually check for
damage and lubricate the gasket. Install it over the 6-inch pipe where you
have just installed the MPD nozzle. Select the Nozzle Backing Pipe - a 6-
inch pipe with a ½-inch coupling welded to the middle. Position the
• The TMD diffuser is cast inside a 6-inch pipe with a 2-inch piece of orange
polyurethane diffuser protruding. Take a gasket from another one of the 6-
inch grooved couplings, visually check it for damage and then lubricate it.
Install the gasket over the 6-inch pipe where you have found the TMD
Diffuser. Slide the polyurethane protrusion into the remaining 6-inch
opening on the mixer body and slide the gasket in place then connect the
grooved coupling. Torque as required.
• Take the gaskets out of the 2 quick connect couplings, 4-inch type 78.
Visually check the gaskets and lubricate them for installation. Slide one
gasket over the 4-inch (10 cm.) inlet to the Mixer Body. Slide the other
gasket over the 4-inch outlet from the hopper on bottom of the table.
• Position the 4-inch (10 cm.) Butterfly Valve to the face of the 4-inch (10
cm.) pipe extending from the hopper. Rotate the valve for handle access.
Slide the gasket in place and attach the 4-inch (10 cm.) grooved quick
connect coupling.
(NOTE: YOU WILL NEED SOME ASSISTANCE WITH THE NEXT FEW
ASSEMBLY STEPS AS THE PIPING IS FAIRLY HEAVY. YOU WILL NEED
EITHER A CO-WORKER OR A MECHANICAL JACKING DEVICE)
M-I SWACO Project groups may be approached for applications in which HiRIDE
mixing hopper tables may be equipped with automatically controlled valves
and/or electronic instrumentation.

ATTENTION!
The HiRIDE Mixing Hopper is constructed of durable and corrosion resistant stainless
steel. The legs of the unit are constructed of HSS and coated with corrosion resistant
paint. The pipe sections are constructed of mild steel and coated in corrosion resistant
paint. The MPD nozzle and TMD diffuser are constructed of abrasion resistant
urethane. All components have been designed for extended, rugged offshore use.
Proper maintenance will ensure long lifespan. Regular maintenance should include:
• All connections should be manually checked before and after each mixing cycle.
• Any visible buildup in the Eductor assembly should be cleared manually or
removed using high-pressure water. At no time should any hands or manual
devices be placed into the orifice at the bottom of the hopper bowl while
the unit is in operation. Considerable vacuum is present and this creates a
potential serious injury hazard.
• The MPD nozzle and TMD diffuser are constructed of abrasion resistant
polyurethane MPD and TMD pipe sections should be removed once every six (6)
months for visual inspection, cleaning and replacement if required to maintain
optimum performance.
• Damage to surface coatings should be repaired regularly with corrosion resistant
paint.
• All non metal surfaces such as the polyurethane MPD nozzle and TMD diffuser
are non corroding and do not require surface protection.
• If used in cold weather climates where extended sub-zero temperatures are
possible, the Eductor assembly should be disassembled if dormant for an
extended period of time and a protective coating of WD40 or LPS applied.
• Before applying protective coating and storing, wash all components with warm
soapy water and allowed to dry before applying protective coating.
