SECTION 1 INTRODUCTION

The HiRIDE Eductor/Mixing Hopper is unique in the industry due to its multi-zone
mixer design TMD Diffuser. It is offered in three models ranging from a rigidly
mounted eductor to a fully adjustable model whose design permits the eductor
assembly 360 degrees of rotation and 3-inches (7.5 cm.) of vertical travel using
grooved couplings. As a result, it can be placed virtually anywhere near the mixing
area with no hard piping or hot work required. It can easily be installed, de-rigged,
moved and reinstalled by two service personnel.
There are three models of HiRIDE available:

liquid induction port. TMD Diffuser

The HiRIDE eductor assembly consists of three parts:

• MPD Nozzle
• Mixer body
• TMD Diffuser
An eductor is a pump with no moving parts that generates a vacuum/suction by
converting a pressure head to a velocity head. Motive fluid passes through a
converging MPD Nozzle increasing the fluid velocity in the confined space and
creates a vacuum. That vacuum is then harnessed to pull either a solid or a liquid
into the motive flow.

4 MANUAL PART # 90-90-641 (REV.--)

The eductor not only creates a vacuum allowing it to draw solid and liquid
components together but also forces a mixing of the various solids or liquids into the
motive liquid. This mixing occurs in areas of turbulence created in the main flow line
by the TMD Diffuser. These areas of turbulence are created when the motive fluid
generates low-pressure areas in the diffuser as it passes through varying geometric
volumes. The low pressure degrades the motive fluid jet boundaries creating
localized vortices and re-circulation zones that improve the mixing action.
Typical induction rates for common solids used in mud formulations are shown in the
figure below. For example, 26,000 lb. (11818 kg.) of bentonite can be added per hour
and can vary depending on source (sack, big bag or tanker).

FIGURE 1. SOLIDS INDUCTION RATE.

The MPD Nozzle, developed using CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) modeling,
utilizes a converging body-throat design to generate a fluid jet and vacuum below the
inlet hopper. The geometry ensures proper operation with inlet pressures as low as
20 psi reducing both pump loads and pumping costs. The efficient nozzle design
converts the pressure head to velocity head generating a near perfect vacuum of
26.8 in Hg (90.8 KPa.) at the solids/liquids induction interface. In this void space, first
stage mixing occurs as the induced product is entrained in the motive fluid.
The TMD Diffuser, also developed using CFD modeling, uses unique internal
geometry to create the optimum mixing environment. This is done by creating
multiple low pressure volumes that cause jet degradation and create vortex mixing.

5 MANUAL PART # 90-90-641 (REV.--)

It’s efficient sloped inlet and throat design, followed by high angle mixing chamber
and discharge throat/diffuser sections create two additional re-circulation/mixing
zones. This is extremely beneficial when dealing with materials that are difficult to
mix. This design ensures that pressure and flow losses are minimized while vacuum
and throughput are optimized. This is achieved while the mixing energy is
3
maintained at 92 kW/m /hr, the lowest of any comparable unit. As a result, pump
requirements and energy consumption are reduced.
The eductor also has a 2-inch (51 mm.) port installed on the inlet of the mixer body
for the addition of liquid products from drum, bulk tank or tanker sources. Liquids
with a viscosity similar to water can be added at a rate of up to 108 USGPM (410 l/m)
under vacuum without a pump. Induction rates will vary depending on:
1. Length of pipe/hose run,
2. Location of inlet, with respect to fluid (elevation)
3. Density and viscosity of fluid added.

SECTION 2 PURPOSE

The HiRIDE Eductor/Mixing Hopper is designed as an improved means of introducing

liquid, powdered or granular additives into the drilling fluid mixture. The Mixing
Hopper facilitates the manual addition of small volumes of material supplied in
individual 50 or 100 lb (22 or 44 kg.) sacks.
Alternatively, the Eductor assembly (without the Mixing Hopper Table) can also be
installed beneath either an automatic sack slitter, surge tank or bulk bag discharge
unit. This facilitates the introduction of larger volumes of powdered or granular
material into the drill fluid mixture at faster rates. This option provides a contained
system that has benefits with respect to Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) and
lends itself to system automation. It reduces manpower requirements by limiting
worker interaction with the equipment. Also, it contributes to a dust free solids
induction system with the significant HSE benefits.

SECTION 3 DESCRIPTION

As noted previously, there are three versions of the HiRIDE Eductor unit. The most
basic configuration is the eductor unit assembly Model 175-EA. This unit is
comprised of a 6-inch fluid eductor with the required inserts, a 4-inch nozzle inlet for
solids induction and a 2 inch nozzle inlet for fluids induction (see figure 3). The two
other configurations couple a mixing hopper and table with the eductor assembly and
are referred to as: model 175-SE (Standard Eductor) and model 175-FE (Flexible
Eductor). Each of these two Eductor/Mixing Hopper assemblies consists of a
stainless steel table surface and hopper mated to the Eductor assembly. The eductor
piping assembly consists of a 4-inch (10 cm.) Butterfly Valve to isolate the solids inlet
along with an MPD Nozzle and TMD Diffuser inserted into a 6-inch pipe section. The
connections are generally made using grooved couplings for ease of access and
maintenance.
The HiRIDE Model 175-EA eductor assembly can be easily installed into a pipeline
with grooved couplings. It can be installed at the outlet to equipment like a Big Bag
Unit, a Sack Slitter, a Surge Tank or other equipment that may supply bulk powdered
chemicals to the system.

FIGURE 3. HIRIDE MODEL 175-EA EDUCTOR ASSEMBLY

The HiRIDE Model 175-SE mixing hopper adds a table and hopper to the eductor
described above. This unit can be used with a simple sack induction system to add
powdered chemicals from the sacks into the drilling fluid stream via the integral
hopper. The piping for this eductor unit is fixed to the table structure and fully
supported by the table itself. This table can be placed inline with the 6 inch drilling
fluid line using 2 grooved couplings as shown. Please note the direction of flow in
this diagram is from right to left.

9 MANUAL PART # 90-90-641 (REV.--)

FIGURE 4. HIRIDE MODEL 175-SE STANDARD EDUCTOR

The HiRIDE Model 175 FE Mixing hopper is the most flexible table assembly on the
market. It allows the eductor to be rotated 360 degrees and has a 3-inch (7.5 cm.)
built-in slip joint for height adjustment as shown in the figure below. This flexibility
allows the Eductor/Mixing Hopper unit to be placed in almost any orientation without
the need to cut and weld on the location. Note: In this case the eductor assembly
is supported by the customers piping and is not directly supported by the
Mixing Hopper table.

10 MANUAL PART # 90-90-641 (REV.--)

FIGURE 5. HIRIDE MODEL 175-FE FLEXIBLE EDUCTOR

Models 175-SE and 175-FE tables measure 39¼-inches high x 29½-inches wide and
42¾-inches long
(99.7 cm. high x 74.9 cm. wide x 108.6 cm. long). The hopper bowl is 24½-inches
(62 cm.) in diameter narrowing to an outlet diameter of 3½ -inches (9 cm.) at a depth
of 15-inches (38 cm.) from the top of the table. The Hopper bowl has a volume of 2
3 3
ft (0.06 m ).
The MPD nozzle constricts the flow from the 6-inch (15 cm.) line to a 1¾-inch (4.4
cm.) diameter outlet orifice in the nozzle via a downstream, inwardly sloping conical
shape. The flow exits the downstream side of the MPD nozzle at high velocity into a
void space. Both the Mixing Hopper and a 2-inch liquid induction line, connect to this
void space through manually operated valves. With either valve open, the high
velocity fluid jet creates a zone of relative low pressure, creating suction and drawing
chemicals into the fluid jet.
Powdered or liquid chemicals drawn into the void space are carried by the high
velocity jet into the TMD diffuser where the geometry promotes turbulence and
generates mixing. Contact between the fluid jet and the inward sloping mouth of the
diffuser creates turbulence in the flow (zones of re-circulation), which facilitate mixing

11 MANUAL PART # 90-90-641 (REV.--)

of the two phases. The flow continues through the first throat of the diffuser into a
secondary void space, where changes in velocity and geometry create more
turbulence and re-circulation zones. The flow then enters the second throat of the
TMD and exits into the 6-inch (15 cm) pipe creating a third change in velocity, more
recirculation and turbulence. At this stage, all material is effectively entrained in the
fluid.
All models have a 2-inch (5 cm.) diameter angled port installed directly below the 4-
inch (10 cm.) butterfly valve on the inlet to the eductor void space. This is used for
the addition of liquid products from a drum, bulk tank or tanker. Liquids with a
viscosity similar to water can be added at rates up to 108 USGPM (410 l/m).
Induction rates will vary depending on the temperature and viscosity of the fluid
added.

hard pipe via grooved coupling or 150# flanges. Ensure rig survey information
includes type of rig hard pipe connection.

• Ensure all nuts on grooved couplings and flange connections are properly
torqued prior to leak tests.

Unit Assembly (175-EA)

If the HiRIDE is shipped unassembled or disassembly is required for maintenance the
following steps should be followed for assembly.
• The Mixer Body, it will have pipe nozzles of 4 inch and 2 inch sticking out. Slide
the MPD Nozzle into the longer section of 6-inch pipe. Once fully seated, the
MPD nozzle should align flush with the leading edge of the 4-inch perpendicular
pipe and the lip of the nozzle should be flush with the end of the 6-inch pipe

NOTE: THIS IS THE UPSTREAM END OF THE EDUCTOR.

21 MANUAL PART # 90-90-641 (REV.--)

• Take a gasket from one of the 6 inch grooved couplings, visually check for
damage and lubricate the gasket. Install it over the 6-inch pipe of the Mixer Body
where you have just installed the MPD nozzle. Select the Nozzle Backing Pipe -
a 6 inch pipe with a ½ inch coupling welded to the middle. Position the Backing
Pipe to the back edge of the MPD Nozzle and move the grooved gasket into
place such that it seats on both the Mixer Body and the Nozzle Backing Pipe at
the same time. Fit the 6-inch grooved coupling into the grooved ends. Install the
nuts and bolts and torque as required.
• The TMD diffuser is cast inside a 6-inch pipe with a 2-inch piece of the orange
polyurethane protruding. Take a gasket from another one of the 6inch grooved
clamps, visually check for damage and lubricate the gasket. Install it over the 6
inch pipe where you have found the TMD Diffuser. Slide the polyurethane
protrusion into the remaining 6-inch opening on the mixer body and slide the
gasket in place then connect the grooved clamp. Torque the nuts and bolts.
• Take the gaskets out of the 2 quick connect couplings 4-inch type 78. Visually
check the gaskets and lubricate them for installation. Slide one over the 4-inch
(10 cm.) inlet to the Mixer Body. Slide the other over the customer’s 4-inch
solids induction line.
• Position the 4-inch (10 cm.) Butterfly Valve to the face of the customer’s 4inch
(10 cm.) solids injection pipe work. Slide the gasket in place and attach the 4-
inch (10 cm.) grooved quick connect clamp. Rotate the valve for handle access.
• Align the outlet of the 4-inch (10 cm.) valve with the 4-inch (10 cm.) inlet pipe on
the Mixer Body. There may be a gap here that will require you to raise the
bottom piping to make contact with the valve. Slide the gasket up onto the valve
and pipe, then quickly affix the 4 inch (10 cm.) quick connect grooved clamp.
• Tighten all grooved couplings to the correct torque.
• Locate the vacuum gauge (scale 30 inches Hg to 30 psig). Put Teflon tape
around the threads on the gauge and install it in the ½-inch coupling found on
the vertical 4-inch pipe.
• Locate the pressure gauge (scale 0 to 160 psig). Put Teflon tape around the
threads on the gauge and install it in the ½ inch coupling found on the 6inch
pipe located behind the MPD Nozzle.
• All models also have a 2-inch (5 cm.) angled port with 2-inch (5 cm.) cam lock
coupling and dust plug. Ensure these two items are present or install them as
required. Put Teflon tape on the threaded 2-inch pipe and screw the coupling in
place.

22 MANUAL PART # 90-90-641 (REV.--)

• Check the Cam Lock gasket is in place and either install the Dust Cap or install
a flexible 2-inch liquid injection hose.

Note: Alternatively the eductor piping may be fitted with grooved to Flange
adaptors and then the unit may be bolted between flanges. All flanges, if used,
must be installed with gaskets. Each gasket should be lubricated with copper
based lubricant to prevent adhesion of gasket to face of flange.

Note: All gaskets supplied with grooved couplings must be lubricated

either with copper based lubricant or petroleum based to facilitate
installation and removal.

SECTION 4.2 Installation Steps HiRIDE Model 175-SE

HiRIDE Model 175-SE unit is requires an opening in the Drilling Fluids line of
approximately 42.2 inches with the two ends grooved to fit grooved couplings.
Drilling fluids piping should be approximately 8-inches from centerline to the
bottom of the table mounting pads. Any variations in height can be
accommodated by adding shims to raise the table assembly.
• It is expected the table will be mounted on a level surface and oriented to
the correct fluid flow direction, as indicated in the drawing (Figure 4).
• Inlet of the MPD nozzle should be oriented downstream of main drilling
fluids line connection (indicated by arrows). Mudflow should be directed
into the 5½-inch (14 cm.) mouth of MPD nozzle discharging through 1¾-
inch (5 cm.) orifice. Confirm flow direction prior to installation.
• The MPD nozzle and TMD diffuser pipe sections are connected to rig hard
pipe via 6-inch (15 cm.) grooved couplings or 150# flanges. Ensure rig
survey information includes type of rig hard pipe connection required.
• Ensure all grooved couplings and flange connections are properly torqued
prior to leak tests and that the nuts are easily accessible with a wrench.
• Check access to the table top to ensure it is ergonomically suitable to the
personnel who will be dumping sacks into the hopper.

Unit Assembly (175-SE)

the bottom piping to make contact with the valve. Slide the gasket up onto
the valve and pipe the quickly affix the 4-inch (10 cm.) quick connect
grooved clamp.
• Torque all of the grooved couplings as required.
• Install the two eductor pipe clamps, insert the bolts and torque the nuts
and bolts. This will secure the piping to the table.
• Locate the vacuum gauge (scale 30 inches Hg to 30 psig). Put Teflon
tape around the threads on the gauge and install it in the ½-inch coupling
found on the vertical 4-inch solids inlet pipe.
• Locate the Pressure gauge (scale 0 to 160 psig). Put Teflon tape around
the threads on the gauge and install it in the ½-inch coupling found on the
6inch Nozzle Backing pipe located upstream of the MPD Nozzle.
• All models also have a 2-inch (5 cm.) angled port with 2-inch (5 cm.) cam
lock coupling and dust plug. Ensure these two items are present or install
them as required. Put Teflon tape on the threaded 2-inch pipe and screw
the coupling in place.
• Check the Cam Lock gasket is in place and either install the Dust Cap or
install a flexible 2-inch liquid injection hose.
Note: Alternatively the eductor piping may be fitted with grooved to Flange
adaptors and then the unit may be bolted between flanges. All flanges, if
used, must be installed with gaskets. Each gasket should be lubricated
with copper based lubricant to prevent adhesion of gasket to face of flange.

Note: All gaskets supplied with grooved couplings must be lubricated

either with copper based lubricant or petroleum based to facilitate
installation and removal.

SECTION 4.3 Installation Steps HiRIDE Model 175-FE

HiRIDE Model 175-FE unit is requires an opening in the Drilling Fluids line of
approximately 42.2 inches with the two ends grooved to fit grooved couplings.
The piping centerline elevation can be between 5 and 8-inches from the bottom
of the table mounting pads. Any excess variation with this height can be
accommodated by adding shims to raise the table assembly.
• It is expected the table will be mounted on a level surface. The eductor
piping assembly may be rotated and elevated as necessary to

loosening the bolts on the 5x4-inch reducer coupling, located between the
valve and Mixer Body, and moving the piping as necessary. Once the
desired position is obtained, tighten the coupling.
• The inlet of the MPD nozzle pipe section should be oriented downstream
of main drilling fluid line connection (indicated by arrows). Mudflow should
be into the 5½-inch (14 cm.) mouth of MPD nozzle discharging through
the 1¾-inch (5 cm.) orifice. Confirm the fluid flow direction prior to
installation.
• The MPD nozzle and TMD diffuser pipe sections are connected to rig hard
pipe via 6-inch (15 cm.) grooved couplings or 150# flanges. Ensure the
rig survey information includes the type of rig hard pipe connection.
(grooved or 150# Flange)
• Ensure that all grooved couplings and/or flange connections are torqued
prior to leak tests and that the nuts are easily accessible with a wrench.
• Check access to the table top to ensure it is ergonomically suitable to the
personnel who will be dumping sacks into the hopper.

Backing Pipe to the back edge of the MPD Nozzle and move the grooved
gasket in place such that it seats on both the Mixer Body and the Nozzle
Backing Pipe at the same time. Fit the 6-inch grooved couplings into the
grooved ends and torque as required.

• The TMD diffuser is cast inside a 6-inch pipe with a 2-inch piece of orange
polyurethane diffuser protruding. Take a gasket from another one of the 6-
inch grooved couplings, visually check it for damage and then lubricate it.
Install the gasket over the 6-inch pipe where you have found the TMD
Diffuser. Slide the polyurethane protrusion into the remaining 6-inch
opening on the mixer body and slide the gasket in place then connect the
grooved coupling. Torque as required.

• Take the gaskets out of the 2 quick connect couplings, 4-inch type 78.
Visually check the gaskets and lubricate them for installation. Slide one
gasket over the 4-inch (10 cm.) inlet to the Mixer Body. Slide the other
gasket over the 4-inch outlet from the hopper on bottom of the table.

• Position the 4-inch (10 cm.) Butterfly Valve to the face of the 4-inch (10
cm.) pipe extending from the hopper. Rotate the valve for handle access.
Slide the gasket in place and attach the 4-inch (10 cm.) grooved quick
connect coupling.

(NOTE: YOU WILL NEED SOME ASSISTANCE WITH THE NEXT FEW
ASSEMBLY STEPS AS THE PIPING IS FAIRLY HEAVY. YOU WILL NEED
EITHER A CO-WORKER OR A MECHANICAL JACKING DEVICE)

27 MANUAL PART # 90-90-641 (REV.--)

• Align the bottom of the 4-inch (10 cm.) valve with the 4-inch (10 cm.) slider
pipe; this pipe has an extended grooved groove. Attach the slider pipe to
the valve using one of the 4-inch type 78 grooved quick connect
couplings.
• Take the gasket from the 5x4-inch grooved reducer, check it for damage
and lubricate it for installation. Install the gasket over the bottom of the 4-
inch Slider Pipe.
• Take the assembled mixer body spool, with assistance, and position it
such that the 4-inch (10 cm.) Slider Pipe fits inside the 5-inch (12.5 cm.)
pipe opening on the mixer body. Raise the pipe spool so the 4-inch (10
cm.) pipe is partly inside the 5-inch (12.5 cm.) pipe, move the 5x4 grooved
• Reducer gasket in place so that the 5-inch opening of the gasket fits on
the 5-inch pipe and install the 5x4 grooved Reducer in the groove. Torque
the bolts as required, before releasing the pipe spool. The pipe spool is
now supported by the 5x4 grooved reducer coupling and the hopper table
through the valve.

28 MANUAL PART # 90-90-641 (REV.--)

• Tighten up all of the grooved couplings to the correct torque.
• Locate the vacuum gauge (scale 30 inches Hg to 30 psig). Put Teflon tape
around the threads on the gauge and install it in the ½-inch coupling found
on the vertical 5-inch solids inlet pipe.
• Locate the Pressure gauge (scale 0 to 160 psig). Put Teflon tape around
the threads on the gauge and install it in the ½-inch coupling found on the
6inch pipe located upstream of the MPD Nozzle.

SECTION 4.4 POWER REQUIREMENTS AND SUPPLY

Please note; there are no electrical or electronic components on the HiRIDE

mixing hopper tables.

M-I SWACO Project groups may be approached for applications in which HiRIDE
mixing hopper tables may be equipped with automatically controlled valves
and/or electronic instrumentation.

ATTENTION !

BEFORE MAKING ANY ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS, MAKE

SURE THE POWER SOURCE IS DISCONNECTED AND THE
STARTER IS IN THE OFF POSITION.

SECTION 5 OPERATION

Prior to operation, installation personnel must confirm flow direction and

conformance with flow indicator arrow on Eductor assembly. Make sure there are
no downstream pipe restrictions or obstructions. Make sure no downstream
valves are closed.
First elbow downstream of the HiRIDE must be a minimum of 4 pipe diameters
downstream of the discharge end of the TMD diffuser pipe section. For example:
Based upon a 6-inch (15 cm.) pipe section the nearest downstream elbow must
be a minimum 24-inches (60 cm.).
All valves must be in the OPEN position. Open all flow control valves on the drill
fluid line. NOTE: DO NOT OPEN THE HOPPER ISOLATION BUTTERFLY
VALVE AT THIS TIME.
Do not open the 2-inch ball valve on the liquid induction port. This valve is
located on the liquid chemical tank and should remain closed until you are ready
to induct fluid. Typically, when liquid product is to be introduced, the 2-inch (5
cm) ball valve is opened and the 4-inch (10 cm.) butterfly valve controlling solids
induction is to be closed.
Ensure all connections are sound and that pressure/vacuum gages equipped
with manual vents are in the open position.
Start the pump and initiate flow through the 6-inch drilling fluid lines. Check the
pressure gauge and vacuum gauge as well look around for any leakage.
For safety, where possible increase pump power in 20% intervals up to desired
flow rate to ensure there are no leaks. Check connection integrity at each
interval.
Note record vacuum and pressure gauge readings.
Begin feeding material. If you are using liquid injection, open the 2-inch inlet
valve and check the flow and check for leaks. If you are using solids induction
through the hopper, open the 4 inch butterfly valve, listen to the jet flow and
deposit powdered solids as required through the hopper and hopper throat.
Visually monitor the jet for solids buildup.
Once mixing cycle is complete, continue to run unit at full flow for 15 minutes to
clear any buildup in the Eductor assembly
Disengage pump and close all valves.
Close Butterfly Valve at base of hopper bowl to prevent any foreign object from
entering the eductor.

31 MANUAL PART # 90-90-641 (REV.--)

ATTENTION!
Safety Tips:
• Always wear PPE such as safety glasses, face shield, gloves, respirator and
disposable coveralls as required when operating the unit. The PPE should
reflect the chemicals being used.
• The HiRIDE unit generates a strong vacuum in the hopper. Care must be
taken to keep hands and equipment clear of the hopper throat or inlet.
• Do not exceed the maximum operating pressure of 125 psig.
• Never close valves downstream of the HiRIDE unit when the feed pump is
running. This will cause drilling fluid to backup in the hopper and result in a spill.
• IDEALLY, DO NOT INSTALL VALVES DOWN STREAM OF THE HiRIDE
EDUCTOR/HOPPER.

SECTION 5.1 STARTING/STOPPING

ATTENTION!

SECTION 6 MAINTENANCE

The HiRIDE Mixing Hopper is constructed of durable and corrosion resistant stainless
steel. The legs of the unit are constructed of HSS and coated with corrosion resistant
paint. The pipe sections are constructed of mild steel and coated in corrosion resistant
paint. The MPD nozzle and TMD diffuser are constructed of abrasion resistant
urethane. All components have been designed for extended, rugged offshore use.
Proper maintenance will ensure long lifespan. Regular maintenance should include:

• All connections should be manually checked before and after each mixing cycle.
• Any visible buildup in the Eductor assembly should be cleared manually or
removed using high-pressure water. At no time should any hands or manual
devices be placed into the orifice at the bottom of the hopper bowl while
the unit is in operation. Considerable vacuum is present and this creates a
potential serious injury hazard.
• The MPD nozzle and TMD diffuser are constructed of abrasion resistant
polyurethane MPD and TMD pipe sections should be removed once every six (6)
months for visual inspection, cleaning and replacement if required to maintain
optimum performance.
• Damage to surface coatings should be repaired regularly with corrosion resistant
paint.
• All non metal surfaces such as the polyurethane MPD nozzle and TMD diffuser
are non corroding and do not require surface protection.
• If used in cold weather climates where extended sub-zero temperatures are
possible, the Eductor assembly should be disassembled if dormant for an
extended period of time and a protective coating of WD40 or LPS applied.
• Before applying protective coating and storing, wash all components with warm
soapy water and allowed to dry before applying protective coating.
