Historical Background
During the Soviet offensive on the Don river, the 812th Siberian Infantry Regiment of the 304th Rifle Division, settled around Hill 213,5
in the night 23 to 24 August in front of the camp of the Italian Regiment Savoia Cavalleria. This unit had too Hill 213,5 as objective. Under
the fire of Soviet mortars and machine-guns, the Savoia Cavalleria had no other choice than to charge the Soviet infantry. Two squadrons
rushed on the enemy, with the support of machine-guns and artillery dismounted. After the first charge, two other squadrons rushed
each in turn to finish the Soviet regiment. Siberians had lost in this battle 150 killed in action, 300 wounded, 600 prisoners of war and
several heavy weapons while the Italians had lost only 33 KIA, 52 wounded and about one hundred horses killed. A tactical victory but a
short-lived one.
