Goals and Objectives: To understand fundamental concepts of mechanical vibrations. To model

mechanical systems and determine natural frequencies, damping ratios, and response to periodic forcing
functions. To model multi degree of freedom systems and determine natural frequencies, mode shapes,
and forced response.

Textbook: Rao, Mechanical Vibrations, 5th Edition, Prentice Hall, 2010.

Grading: Students can select between two options

Important Notes:
 Students are strongly encouraged to select Grading Option 1. However, duplicate or copied
homeworks will be penalized. Submitting 1st homework means selecting Option 1, and not
submitting means selecting Option 2. This decision cannot be revoked. Copied homeworks results in
losing the 5%.
 Solve as many problems as you can. This is the only way to learn.
 Attendance is expected for all lectures during the semester.
 Use of cell-phones in the class will not be tolerated. You may leave class to check your phone.
 Only the students with a valid excuse (medical report, etc.) are eligible to take a make-up
examination. Be prepared to experience more difficult questions in the make-up exams.
