College Application Narrative

I have always been a quiet and shy person, so you can imagine how intense the idea of a

job interview was to someone like me. I would consider my personality that of an introvert

because I enjoy being with small groups and quiet settings, but as I started to plan my future, I

realized that I needed to challenge myself by coming out of my comfort zone. At the age of

sixteen, I decided that it was time to look for a job that would lead to possible future

advancements in the nursing field. I had decided that a career in the medical field was something

I wanted to pursue, so when a job opened at Bradford Ecumenical Home I decided to apply. I

was called in for an interview just a few days later. This was nerve wracking for me and made

me incredibly anxious. This was the first time I would be on my own without someone to guide

me like my mom or a teacher. I knew this was something I needed to do in order to start gaining

independence and responsibility.

The interview was not as uncomfortable as I had initially thought it was going to be and

to my excitement, I got the job. I was hired as a Nutrition Aide at Chapel Ridge, where I have

been for two years now. This job has allowed me to grow personally, as I have come out of my

shell. I interact with the residents, staff, coworkers and supervisors daily and enjoy it

thoroughly. I am proud to earn my own money, manage my bank account and have some level

of independence. I am praised by my boss about how dependable and responsible I am. This

experience has helped me realize that I can challenge myself and take risks.

This job not only helped me overcome my social insecurities, but it has provided me

with opportunities for college and a career. I will be able to take my state certified nursing

assistant test this year, which would allow me to advance at my current place of employment.

Once I am a certified nursing assistant at this facility, they will help contribute to my college

expenses and even provide me an opportunity for employment after I graduate. This is something

that I plan on taking advantage of and it has helped me set that goal for myself.

I would have never imagined that a simple awkward job interview would lead to these

possibilities. I am proud of my work ethic, as I am always on time and never call off or not show

up. My boss knows that she can depend on me, as well as my coworkers. I am also

compassionate and patient with the residents, which has helped me develop close relationships

with them. I believe this is an important trait to have as a nurse as we are there to help people,

especially when they are not their best. I understand that I will be in situations that may be

difficult, challenging, stressful and sad as a nurse but that there are also great rewards. I believe

that I will gain more confidence, as I force myself to try new experiences because I never know

where they may take me.
