PURPOSE AND USE OF PROCESS INDUSTRY PRACTICES

In an effort to minimize the cost of process industry facilities, this Practice has
been prepared from the technical requirements in the existing standards of major
industrial users, contractors, or standards organizations. By harmonizing these
technical requirements into a single set of Practices, administrative, application, and
engineering costs to both the purchaser and the manufacturer should be reduced. While
this Practice is expected to incorporate the majority of requirements of most users,
individual applications may involve requirements that will be appended to and take
precedence over this Practice. Determinations concerning fitness for purpose and
particular matters or application of the Practice to particular project or engineering
situations should not be made solely on information contained in these materials. The
use of trade names from time to time should not be viewed as an expression of
preference but rather recognized as normal usage in the trade. Other brands having the
same specifications are equally correct and may be substituted for those named. All
Practices or guidelines are intended to be consistent with applicable laws and
regulations including OSHA requirements. To the extent these Practices or guidelines
should conflict with OSHA or other applicable laws or regulations, such laws or
regulations must be followed. Consult an appropriate professional before applying or
acting on any material contained in or suggested by the Practice.

This Practice is subject to revision at any time by the responsible Function Team
and will be reviewed every 5 years. This Practice will be revised, reaffirmed, or
withdrawn. Information on whether this Practice has been revised may be found at
http://www.pip.org.

NOTES:
32 Flanged ends may be molded raised face with threaded ductile iron flanges, lap joint flanges with lap joint ends on lined pipe, or two-piece lap joint
flanges with lap joint ends on lined pipe that meet Class 150 dimensions. Inner flange corners are to be chamfered a minimum of 1/4" or per the
manufacturers specifications.
34 Branch on lateral to be full sized.
35 Reducing flange (reducing filler flange). Bolts for reduced connection to thread into blind holes in the face of the flange.
37 Both ends of the reducing ELL to have Class 150 flanges.
38 Gaskets are not required for connections between plastic-lined components. 3/16" PTFE envelope gaskets are required for mating plastic-lined
components to non-lined components. See manufacturer’s specifications for specific applications.
39 Hex head bolts or cap screws, nuts, and washers may be used where required.
40 Consult manufacturer for limits for temperature, pressure, and vacuum ratings for specific service.
41 Torque to manufacturer’s requirements. Re-torque per manufacturer’s requirements.
42 Welding or heating of metal surfaces of plastic-lined pipe is not permitted.
43 Bending of plastic-lined pipe is to be done only by the manufacturer.
46 The use of spacers should be limited as much as possible. Spacers are permitted for field fitting or where other means of making connections are not
possible.
47 Plastic lining in pipe to comply with ASTM F1545 standard specification for PP plastic-lined ferrous metal pipe and fittings. Pipe to have Class 150
flanged ends. Pipe to be equipped with means to vent pressure from between plastic liner and steel pipe. The vent shall not be obstructed.
48 Fittings to comply with ASTM F1545 standard specification for PP plastic-lined ferrous metal pipe and fittings. All wetted surfaces are to be fully
lined. Fittings to comply with ASME dimensional requirements B16.42 or B16.5.
49 Instrument tee to slip between two flanges on the main run. Branch connection is to have a Class 150 flange for the branch size.
62 Install in horizontal position with cover up or in vertical position with upward flow.
64 Install in horizontal position or in vertical position with upward flow.
