Emma Dashnaw Clinical Psychologist 9/10/2019

My dream job is to be a clinical psychologist. A clinical psychologist is someone who specializes

in identifying and diagnosing behavioral, emotional, and mental disorders, creating treatments

and therapy sessions, conducting research, publishing research findings, teaching classes, and

monitoring patient progress through sessions. A clinical psychologist helps clients define goals

whether personal, social, educational, or vocational and assists them in achieving those goals.

The education level needed for this position is a doctoral degree, as well as, at least a one-year

supervised internship. Most states also require psychologists to pass the Examination for

Professional Practice in Psychology (EPPP). (All Psychology Schools, n.d.) (Psychologist-License,

n.d.)

I believe a higher level of education is not only extremely important, but vital to succeed in the

career I am interested in pursuing. The state of Massachusetts requires psychologists to have a

doctoral degree, followed by at least one year of full-time, supervised work experience. I am

currently taking General Psychology this semester, which is a requirement for all psychology

majors. I am also taking 1st Year PDS which will help me develop the professional skills needed

to work in my field of interest. Effective Speaking will help me communicate clearly to large

audiences. Learning to Lead will help me develop and apply leadership skills, as well as, work

effectively in a group setting. Digital Applications will teach me how to utilize computer

software, create power point presentations, help me write effective word documents, and

navigate the digital world with ease. In the future, taking classes in pursuance of Psychology will

help me have a better understanding of the human mind, behavioral patterns, and mental

disorders. My goal is to open my own private practice where I may properly diagnose people

through observation, interacting, and interviewing. Treatment would consist of therapy

sessions and working with each of my clients to develop a plan suitable for them to achieve

their individual goals. (Landry, 2007)

The median yearly salary for a clinical psychologist working in the state of Massachusetts is

$79,810. Wages usually start anywhere between $48,710 and go up towards $131,350. I plan to

manage the money I earn by paying off my student loan debt, obtaining the proper licenses and

insurance required to practice as a clinical psychologist. I would like to implement a savings

plan so that hopefully I would be able to purchase a home and a new car of my own. (Sokanu,

n.d.)
