Network capabilities
The C3200 consists of a base system with one Switch and Management Module
(SMM) slot and six slots for DOCSIS interface modules (downstream DQM QAM
modules or upstream DCU modules). Any combination of downstream modules and
upstream modules are supported by the platform to enable a flexible downstream to
upstream channel ratio.
The DOCSIS QAM Module (DQM) provides DOCSIS packet processing and QoS,
DOCSIS downstream MAC, PHY, and RF up-conversion. There are three versions of
downstream modules: DQM04 (4-channel), DQM08 (8-channel), and DQM16
(16-channel). All downstream modules have four output ports.
The DOCSIS Control and Upstream module (DCU) includes DOCSIS packet
processing, DOCSIS upstream MAC, and burst mode receivers. There are three
versions of DCUs: DCU16 (16-channel), DCU-8 (8-channel), and DCU04
(4-channel).
For complete information on the C3200 features and capabilities, see the Casa
Systems C3200 CMTS Data Sheet.
C3200 chassis
The C3200 chassis is a 3RU enclosure that installs in a standard 19-inch equipment
rack for AC and DC power plants. Rack mounting flanges are included with the
chassis to facilitate mounting in the many rack variations available today.

At the RF output (downstream) and RF input (upstream) cable interfaces using the
75-ohm F-connectors, ports are numbered with <module> and <port> in format of
<module>/<port>.
On the DQM QAM, ports are 0 to 3 counting from left to right on each module.
On the DCU upstream, the two rows of ports on each module are numbered 0 to 7
counting from left to right on the bottom row first, and then from left to right on the
top row.
Three internal fans draw cooling air into the front of the chassis where the air is
directed across the internal components at two configurable fan operating speeds, low
and high. The air exits through openings at the rear of the chassis.

Power plugs/
ON/OFF switches
The power modules provide filtered, hot-pluggable, redundant, and load-shared power
to the chassis. If one module fails, the redundant power module immediately begins
providing power to the system. Although one power module can provide sufficient
power for a fully configured chassis, the system should not be run for an extended
period of time with only one power module. If a power module fails, you should
install a replacement module as soon as possible.

DOCSIS modules
In addition to the SMM, there are two types of DOCSIS modules that install into the
C3200.
• DOCSIS QAM downstream (DQM)
• DOCSIS Control and Upstream (DCU)
The DOCSIS QAM Module (DQM) is a DOCSIS downstream processor that includes
DOCSIS packet processing, QoS, DOCSIS downstream MAC, PHY, and RF up
conversion, serving as the RF downstream interface between the cable headend and
DOCSIS-based cable modems.
The DOCSIS Control & Upstream (DCU) Module is a DOCSIS upstream unit that
includes RF burst receiving, signal demodulation, DOCSIS upstream MAC, PHY, as
well as packet processing and QoS, serving as the RF upstream interface between the
cable headend and DOCSIS-based cable modems. The DCU is a single-slot module
and supports 8 DOCSIS burst receivers. It is a hot-swappable unit.

Make sure that you attach an electrostatic discharge (ESD) strap to the CMTS anytime
you perform any maintenance that involves removing hardware components. ESD
straps usually have an alligator-style clip that allows you to easily attach the strap to
the system sheet metal. Air vent holes in the sheet metal allow for easy attachment of
an ESD strap with an alligator clip.
See Figure 2-1 for attaching an ESD strap to the C3200 CMTS.

This chapter describes the maintenance activities that you can expect to perform on
the C3200 after the system has been running. You may have to perform specific
maintenance procedures to ensure the system is operating properly. These procedures
include routine maintenance such as upgrading system components or replacing
components with field replaceable units.
System components fall into two categories: hot-swappable components that do not
require you to power off the system before replacing them, and those components that
do require you to power off the system. All line cards, for example, are hot-swappable
and can be replaced while the system is running.

Replace the SMM to see if this eliminates the unexpected reboots. If the problem
persists, the card cage may be a fault. See Chapter 4, “Maintaining the C3200
hardware” for information on replacing the SMM and the card cage, if necessary.
System unresponsive
Assuming there are no power-related problems, a system that is not responsive can be
due to a hardware failure or a software problem. If the console is attached, it might be
possible to collect information from the system. The output of the show tech and
show dmesg commands might provide information that will help identify the
problem. Contact Casa Technical Support. If a hardware problem exists, it is possible
that the SMM has failed.
Replace the SMM to see if this eliminates the problem. If the problem persists, the
card cage may be at fault. See Chapter 4, “Maintaining the C3200 hardware” for
information on replacing the SMM and the card cage, if necessary.
If the line card is in the "Not ready" state, first ensure that the line card is properly
seated in the slot and that the screws are tight. Otherwise, a failure may be present at
the line card, card cage, or at the SMM. The first step should be to try to reboot the
line card unconditionally from diagnostic mode, as follows:
If these actions do not resolve the problem, swap the line card. If the problem persists,
swap the card cage. If this still does not resolve the problem, then swap the SMM.
See Chapter 4, “Maintaining the C3200 hardware” for information on replacing the
SMM and the card cage, if necessary.
If it is a hardware problem, it is most likely the line card that has failed. Swap the line
card first. If the problem persists, then swap the card cage. If this still does not resolve
the problem, then swap the SMM.
See Chapter 4, “Maintaining the C3200 hardware” for information on replacing the
SMM and the card cage, if necessary.
First, reboot the line card to see if the modems come back online. If this works, then
the problem is most likely a software or plant problem.
If the problem persists, swap the line card. If this does not resolve the problem, replace
the card cage. If this still does not resolve the problem, then swap the SMM.
See Chapter 4, “Maintaining the C3200 hardware” for information on replacing the
SMM and the card cage, if necessary.
First, reboot the system to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, then the
problem is most likely a software problem. If the problem persists, swap the card cage.
If this does not resolve the problem, replace the SMM. If this still does not resolve the
problem, then swap the affected line cards.
See Chapter 4, “Maintaining the C3200 hardware” for information on replacing the
SMM, card cage, and line cards, if necessary.
Appendix C describes how to re-seat or replace the C3200 DIMM on the SMM card.
It may be necessary to re-seat (or replace) the SMM DMM if the SMM should
suddenly malfunction. Malfunctions include processing errors, segmentation faults,
core dumps, and a failure of the system to boot up properly. After re-seating the DMM
and reinstalling/rebooting the SMM, check for proper system operation. If this does
not correct the problem, replace the DMM and perform another SMM reboot. If the
problem persists, replace the SMM.
