C3200 system overview

The Casa Systems C3200 Cable Modem Termination System (C3200 CMTS) is a new
class of cable edge device that combines a third generation DOCSIS CMTS and an
MPEG video edge-QAM in a high-density and a high-availability 3RU platform.

The C3200 provides DOCSIS-based IP applications, such as broadband access, VoIP,

IPTV and video-over-IP etc., as well as digital video applications that include SDTV
Broadcast over Cable, HDTV broadcast over Cable, video-on-demand (VOD),
Network Digital Video Recorder (nDVR), interactive gaming, and switched digital
video.

Casa Systems C3200 CMTS

1-2 C3200 Hardware Installation Guide
C3200 chassis

Network capabilities
The C3200 consists of a base system with one Switch and Management Module
(SMM) slot and six slots for DOCSIS interface modules (downstream DQM QAM
modules or upstream DCU modules). Any combination of downstream modules and
upstream modules are supported by the platform to enable a flexible downstream to
upstream channel ratio.

The DOCSIS QAM Module (DQM) provides DOCSIS packet processing and QoS,
DOCSIS downstream MAC, PHY, and RF up-conversion. There are three versions of
downstream modules: DQM04 (4-channel), DQM08 (8-channel), and DQM16
(16-channel). All downstream modules have four output ports.

The DOCSIS Control and Upstream module (DCU) includes DOCSIS packet
processing, DOCSIS upstream MAC, and burst mode receivers. There are three
versions of DCUs: DCU16 (16-channel), DCU-8 (8-channel), and DCU04
(4-channel).

A typical configuration for channel bonded deployment can be 48DSx48US or 1:1

channel ratio or 32DSx64US for 1:2 channel ratio. Each downstream QAM channel
can be configured to support DOCSIS or MPEG/DVB-C video or a combination. In
the minimum configuration, the C3200 can have one DQM04 downstream module
(4 channels of QAM) and one DCU04 upstream module (4 channels of burst mode
receivers).

For complete information on the C3200 features and capabilities, see the Casa
Systems C3200 CMTS Data Sheet.

C3200 chassis
The C3200 chassis is a 3RU enclosure that installs in a standard 19-inch equipment
rack for AC and DC power plants. Rack mounting flanges are included with the
chassis to facilitate mounting in the many rack variations available today.

Front and rear views

The C3200 front panel enclosure supports the fan tray assembly, dual AC or DC
power modules, status LEDs, and the rack mounting brackets, as illustrated in

Slot and port numbering

The C3200 contains six line-card slots located at the rear of the chassis. The slots can
accept any combination of the two types of DOCSIS modules; DQM or DCU
modules. Slots are numbered 0 to 2 counting from left to right on the bottom row and
then 3 to 5 from left to right on the top row, as illustrated in Figure 1-3.

At the RF output (downstream) and RF input (upstream) cable interfaces using the
75-ohm F-connectors, ports are numbered with <module> and <port> in format of
<module>/<port>.

On the DQM QAM, ports are 0 to 3 counting from left to right on each module.

On the DCU upstream, the two rows of ports on each module are numbered 0 to 7
counting from left to right on the bottom row first, and then from left to right on the
top row.

Fan tray assembly

The fan tray assembly (see Figure 1-5) provides cooling air to the chassis from front to
back. It connects to the chassis through a 10-pin connector that plugs into the chassis
midplane.

Three internal fans draw cooling air into the front of the chassis where the air is
directed across the internal components at two configurable fan operating speeds, low
and high. The air exits through openings at the rear of the chassis.

The fan tray is only replaceable as a complete unit.

AC and DC power modules

The C3200 ships with two AC or two DC power modules, as illustrated in Figure 1-6.
The DC power modules receive –36 to -72 VDC from separate power sources. The
AC power modules provide 90 to 264V to the chassis using the appropriate country
cords.

The power modules provide filtered, hot-pluggable, redundant, and load-shared power
to the chassis. If one module fails, the redundant power module immediately begins
providing power to the system. Although one power module can provide sufficient
power for a fully configured chassis, the system should not be run for an extended
period of time with only one power module. If a power module fails, you should
install a replacement module as soon as possible.

Safety guidelines for C3200 installation

This section provides general safety guidelines to prevent injury during equipment
installation and operation. It includes the following:
• Electrical Equipment guidelines
• Preventing Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) damage
• Chassis lifting guidelines

Warning: Only trained and qualified personnel should install, replace, or

service this equipment.

This equipment must be grounded. Never defeat the ground conductor or

operate the equipment in the absence of a suitably installed ground
conductor. Contact the appropriate electrical inspection authority or an
electrician if you are uncertain whether suitable grounding is available.

Do not work on the system or connect or disconnect cables during

lightning activity.

Electrical equipment guidelines

Be sure to follow these important electrical guidelines:
• Always unplug or disconnect the power cable before installing or removing a
chassis.
• Locate the emergency power-off switch for the room in which you are working. If
an electrical accident occurs, turn off the power immediately.
• Do not work alone if potentially hazardous conditions exist.
• Never assume that power is disconnected from a circuit. Always check.
• If an electrical accident occurs, proceed as follows:
— Use caution; do not become a victim yourself.
— Turn off power to the system.
— If possible, send another person to get medical aid. Otherwise, assess the
condition of the victim and then call for help.

Casa Systems C3200 CMTS

Installing the C3200 hardware 2-3
Safety guidelines for C3200 installation

— Determine whether the person needs rescue breathing or external cardiac

compressions; then take appropriate action.

Preventing electrostatic discharge damage

Electrostatic discharge (ESD) damage, which occurs when electronic cards or
components are improperly handled, can result in complete or intermittent failures.
The SMM module, all DOCSIS line-card modules, and the RF switch module consist
of a printed circuit and must be handled properly to protect the modules from ESD.
Use an antistatic strap each time you handle the modules. Handle the modules by the
edges only; never touch the cards or connector pins.
Following are guidelines for preventing ESD damage:
• Always use an ESD-preventive wrist or ankle strap and ensure that it makes good
skin contact. Before removing a module from the chassis, connect the equipment
end of the strap to a bare metal, unpainted surface on the chassis or mounting rack.
See “Attaching an ESD strap.”
• Handle line cards by the faceplates and edges only; avoid touching the card
components or any connector pins.
• When removing a line card, place the removed module component-side-up on an
antistatic surface or in an antistatic bag. If the module will be returned to the
factory, immediately place it in an antistatic bag.
• Avoid contact between the modules and clothing. The wrist strap protects the card
from ESD voltages on the body only; ESD voltages on clothing can still cause
damage.

Attaching an ESD strap

Make sure that you attach an electrostatic discharge (ESD) strap to the CMTS anytime
you perform any maintenance that involves removing hardware components. ESD
straps usually have an alligator-style clip that allows you to easily attach the strap to
the system sheet metal. Air vent holes in the sheet metal allow for easy attachment of
an ESD strap with an alligator clip.

See Figure 2-1 for attaching an ESD strap to the C3200 CMTS.

Chassis lifting guidelines

A fully-populated C3200 chassis weighs approximately 70 lbs and should not be
moved frequently.
Before you install the C3200, plan the chassis placement to ensure that your site is
properly configured. This will keep you from having to move the chassis later to
accommodate power sources and network connections.
Whenever you lift the chassis, follow these guidelines:
• Always disconnect all external cables before lifting or moving the chassis.

Casa Systems C3200 CMTS

Installing the C3200 hardware 2-5
Required tools

• Ensure that your footing is solid, and balance the weight of the object between
your feet.
• Lift the chassis slowly; never move suddenly or twist your body as you lift.
• Keep your back straight and lift with your legs, not your back. If you must bend
down to lift the chassis, bend at the knees, not at the waist, to reduce the strain on
your lower back muscles.
• Lift the chassis from the bottom; grasp the underside of the chassis exterior with
both hands.

Required tools
The following tools are necessary for C3200 installation:
• #2 Phillips screwdriver
• A flat-tip screwdriver
• Nut drivers
• Antistatic wrist strap and for handling system components

Unpacking the system

When the system arrives at your installation site, you will need to carefully unpack the
system and other items included with the shipment. Check the shipping container for
any exterior damage. The container may have a “shock watch” that will reveal if the
container was mishandled during shipment.

Note: If damage is present, notify the shipping company and Casa Systems
immediately for a return material authorization, if necessary.

The C3200 is shipped with all ordered components already installed in the chassis.
The chassis weighs approximately 70 lbs. Follow the lifting guidelines covered earlier
in this chapter.

Installing the system in a rack

Shipping contents
The following items are included with the C3200:
• Technical documentation CD-ROM
• Rack mounting hardware (brackets, screws, and spacers)
• Console cable for local system management
• AC power cables (as ordered for the destination country)
• Small form-factor pluggable (SFPs) modules for Ethernet connections at the
SMM
If ordered, AC-to-DC power supplies with cabling are shipped separately. Contact
Casa Systems for additional information.

Installing the system in a rack

The C3200 is designed for installation in a standard 19-inch mounting rack using
Casa-supplied rack mounting guides. If you installing are multiple systems in an
unpopulated rack, install the first system at the bottom of the rack and work up. This
will prevent the rack from becoming top-heavy and unstable during equipment
installation.,

Caution: Caution must be exercised when rack-mounting this or any

other type of equipment. Ensure that all equipment is properly secured
using the specified hardware. Equipment must be installed in a safe
manner to prevent overloading, tipping over, or other unsafe conditions.

System ventilation at the installation site

When installing equipment, ensure adequate ventilation is available. Inadequate
ventilation will result in higher than normal operating temperatures and may result in
degraded operation. Always ensure the system receives sufficient airflow such that it
will operate within the specified operating temperature range.

Installation procedure
Use the following procedure to install the chassis.

Connecting the chassis to ground (DC systems)

Connecting the chassis to ground (DC systems)

Connecting the C3200 chassis to earth ground (GND) is required for all DC power
installations. The chassis provides a shelf ground terminal at the left rear of the system
near the bottom. The ground terminal provides two M8 bolt studs to connect dual
ground terminal cables .

Note: Star washes, split lock washers, and M8 nuts that are required to
complete the GND chassis connection are not provided with the C3200
chassis.

Warning: Electrical Hazard. Connecting the chassis to Protected Earth

(PE) is mandatory prior to connecting power to the rack and chassis. It
will minimize the potential for damage to your system and maximize
safety at the system site.

Each DC power supply is also equipped with a grounding point. Casa recommends
that you use both the chassis and DC power supply grounding points to ensure
adequate power and chassis GND connections.

Note: In a typical telecom environment, the RETURN (RTN) path of the -48 V
supply is grounded to Protective Earth (PE) of the building.

The specification for the chassis ground connection cable is:

• Required wire size: AWG6
• Use ring terminals large enough for M8 posts.

On the DC power supply GND connection:

• Required wire size: AWG10
• Use ring or spade terminal suitable for M4 threaded screw.

Figure 2-5 illustrates the chassis GND cable installation.

Connecting the Gigabit Ethernet ports

Connecting the Gigabit Ethernet ports

The network uplink connections are made through the GigE Ethernet (GigE) ports at
the SMM module.
The twelve GigE ports support IEEE 802.3z and IEEE 802.3ab specifications for
1000BASE-T/-X (1000 Mbps) transmission over fiber-optic cables and standard
CAT5/CAT6 cables. These ports also support auto-sensing and auto-negotiation of the
proper transmission mode (half duplex or full duplex) with an attached device.
Cables connect to the Ethernet ports using SFP (Small Form-factor Pluggable)
modules.

Installing SFP modules

All GigE ports each require the insertion of an SFP module (SFP-CP copper or
SFP-LC fiber), as illustrated in Figure 3-1. The following warning applies to
fiber-optic SFPs.

Warning: Invisible laser radiation may be emitted from disconnected

fibers or connectors. Do not stare into beams or view directly with optical
instruments.

Figure 3-1. Sample SFP module

To insert an SFP module into a 10GigE or GigE slot:

Casa Systems C3200 CMTS

Connecting and starting the C3200 3-3
Connecting the Gigabit Ethernet ports

1. Attach an ESD wrist strap, grounding the strap to bare metal on the rack or to the
4mm plugs located on the front and back sides of the chassis.

Warning: You must be properly grounded before handling this

ESD-sensitive product. Otherwise, you could damage the SFP during
handling.

2. For optical SFP modules, locate the transmit (TX) and the receive (RX) markings
that identify the topside of the SFP module.

Note: On some modules, the TX and RX markings might be replaced by

arrowheads. These point out of the module connector to signify the transmit
direction, and into the connector to indicate the receive direction.

3. Aligning the back (receive) end of the module in front of SMM faceplate, insert
the module into the Gigabit Ethernet port until you feel the connector snap into
place.
4. Remove the dust plugs from the optical ports, and store them for later use.

Connecting the Ethernet cable to the SFP

To connect to the GigE Ethernet cable:
1. Insert the Ethernet cable into the front (transmit) end of the SFP module, as
illustrated in Figure 3-2.
2. Repeat Step 1 for the other Gigabit Ethernet ports.

Removing Ethernet cables and SFP modules from the SMM

To remove an SFP module:
1. Remove the cable from the front end of the SFP module.
2. To release the lock, pull the SFP module release lever down until it stops.
3. Slide the module out of the receptacle.
4. Replace the dust plugs on the optical ports for protection.

Connecting the RF I/O ports

Connecting the RF I/O ports

Connect the RF I/O upstream and downstream ports to the HFC network, as illustrated
in Figure 3-6:
1. Attach the 75-ohm F-connector on one end of the cable to the RF connector on the
faceplate of RF I/O module.
2. Attach the other end of the cable to the equipment that acts as a gateway to the
HFC network, using the appropriate type of connector for your HFC distribution
equipment.

Caution: When connecting the cable F-connector to the RF connector

on the RF I/O module, ALWAYS use a torque wrench to set the tightness

DC power sources and requirements

DC power sources and requirements

Follow the instructions in this document when connecting a DC power supply to your
C3200. Power supplies that do not meet the requirements, or connections made under
other configurations may cause circuit damage to the system.

General cautions on DC power sources

Caution: General DC power

• The equipment is intended for connection to a suitable SELV rated DC
power source by a qualified personal with adequately rated supply
wire in accordance with local and national regulations.
• The equipment may have multiple power supply connections and
hazardous energy may be present. To de-energize the unit, all
connections must be removed from the power sources by the
disconnection devices or switches.
• A suitably-rated and easily-accessible double pole DC power
disconnect device shall be incorporated if the (+) lead of the power
supply is not grounded. A single-pole disconnect device on the hot (-)
lead will suffice if it is grounded. The device 'On' and 'Off' positions
shall be marked. A disconnect device shall be used on each power
source if multiple power sources are used.
• Each power source shall provide 2 separate feeds to each power
module (each module has 2 terminals, -48VDC and RETURN).
• Equipment's accessible non-current carrying conductive parts and
outer conductor of the coaxial cable receptacle shall be reliably
connected to protective earth/ground.
• Bare conductors of DC input power are not allowed to be accessed by
the end user due to energy hazards.

Power supply usage requirements

The following power supply usage requirements apply to C3200 operations:
1. A power supply must have floating outputs so that OUT (+) can be grounded.
2. A power supply that has only GND and OUT (+) cannot be used for C3200.
3. A power supply that has OUT (-) internally grounded cannot be used for C3200.

Casa Systems C3200 CMTS

Connecting and starting the C3200 3-11
DC power sources and requirements

4. A power supply that has only +48v output pin and a ground pin cannot be used.
5. For a power supply with only -48v output pin and a ground pin, the (-) terminal
(-48v) on the power supply connects to the -48 on C3200; the (+) terminal of the
power supply connects to the (+) terminal (RTN) on the C3200.
6. The C3200 operates using -48VDC power, and consumes less than <700W. Casa
recommends a power supply rated to provide -48VDC at a minimum 850W. Two
power supply circuits are provided for optional redundancy.
7. Two hot-pluggable redundant power supply modules are located at the front of the
chassis.
The power filtering must consist of filtered power terminals and a discrete
line-filter for each power input.
The input voltage range for the chassis is -39 VDC to -60 VDC.
8. The power supply wires to the unit should be a minimum of AWG 10 gauge wire.
Use ring terminals designed for M4 type or UNC 6-32 type screw.
It is recommended that all equipment and racks be properly grounded to eliminate
shock hazards and prevent any unintended voltage offsets among devices.

Note: In a typical telecom environment, the RETURN (RTN) path of the -48 V
supply is grounded to Protective Earth (PE) of the building.

Configuring the optional power unit

To ensure adequate DC power to the C3200, you will need to connect CP2000
modules as follows:
• For 240VAC power sources, you will need one AC voltage input to provide an
output of 2000W. The three remaining AC inputs, if connected, will provide
power redundancy within the CP2000AC54PE. This means that 8000W would be
available to power the C3200.

Casa Systems C3200 CMTS

Connecting and starting the C3200 3-13
Connecting the DC power supplies

• For 120VAC power sources, you will need a one AC voltage input to provide an
output of 1200W. The three remaining AC input, if connected, will provide power
redundancy within the CP2000AC54PE should the one AC input fails. Using all
four AC voltage inputs provides 4800W of power the C3200.
Follow the instructions supplied with the power rectifier for information on rack
mounting and cabling to your AC power source.

Connecting the DC power supplies

Before making the connections to the C3200 power supplies, as shown in Figure 3-8,
be sure that the cables from the DC power source meet the following specifications:

Power cables

• Minimum wire size: AWG12

• Maximum length: 2.5 to 3.0 meters
• Suitable for 30A at 50° C ambient temperature

Required terminals

• Use ring or spade terminals suitable for M4 screw or UNC 6-32

Wire the second power module to a secondary power supply in the same way (for
redundant power applications).
After connecting the power supplies, replace and install the protective covers using
the integrated screws.

Chapter 4. Maintaining the C3200

hardware

This chapter describes the maintenance activities that you can expect to perform on
the C3200 after the system has been running. You may have to perform specific
maintenance procedures to ensure the system is operating properly. These procedures
include routine maintenance such as upgrading system components or replacing
components with field replaceable units.
System components fall into two categories: hot-swappable components that do not
require you to power off the system before replacing them, and those components that
do require you to power off the system. All line cards, for example, are hot-swappable
and can be replaced while the system is running.

About online removal and insertion

About online removal and insertion

All DQM downstream line cards, DCU upstream line cards, dual AC and DC power
supplies, and the fan assembly in a C3200 support online insertion and removal (OIR).
This function allows you to install and replace those components while the system is
operating.
When you remove or insert an OIR component, the system midplane pins send signals
to notify the system, which then does the follows:
1. Rapidly scans the midplane for configuration changes.
2. Initializes all newly inserted OIR components, noting any removed interfaces and
placing them in the administratively shutdown state.
3. Brings all previously configured interfaces back to the state they were in when it
was removed. If any new interfaces are put in the administratively shutdown sate,
as if they were present (but not configured) at boot time and the module must be
configured.

Shutting down the system

Use the following procedure to shut down the system.
1. Notify appropriate personnel that you plan to shut down the system and that the
shutdown results in total loss of service. Appropriate personnel include the
regional alarm or network monitoring center, central office personnel, and key
customers.
2. Before you shut down the system, use the copy command (copy running-config
startup-config) to save any configuration changes to NVRAM. Refer to the Casa
Systems – CMTS Software Configuration Guide“for instructions.
3. Go to the remote power source and set the power switch on the OFF (0) position.

Use the following procedure to replace a DOCIS line card (DQM or DCU) modules.

Removing the line card modules

To remove a line card from the chassis, complete the following steps as illustrated in
Figure 4-1.
1. Make sure that you are properly grounded and that you have an ESD strap
attached to your wrist. See “Attaching an ESD strap” in Chapter 2. Observe all
electrical and safety guides as covered in “Safety guidelines for C3200
installation” in Chapter 2, “Installing the C3200 hardware.”
2. Loosen the captive screws on the faceplate.
3. Grasp the handle and slide the module out of the slot.

Caution: Always handle the module so that you never touch card
components or connector pins.

4. If you are returning the module to Casa Systems, carefully place the module in an
antistatic bag prior to packing the module for shipping.
5. If you are installing a new or replacement card, proceed to the next step.
Otherwise, install a blank cover over the slot and screw down its captive screws to
complete this procedure.

7. Reconnect the interface cables to the SMM.

Replacing the AC and DC power supplies

The C3200 is shipped with two AC or DC power modules that provide a redundant
power supply to the system. One power module can provide sufficient power for a
fully configured chassis so that if one power module fails, the other automatically
begins providing power for the entire system. However, you should not operate the
system for an extended period time with only one power module. If a power module
fails, install a replacement power module as soon as possible.
You do not need to shut down the C3200 to replace a redundant power module. If you
are replacing both power modules, you can replace one, bring it online, and then
replace the other one to avoid shutting down the entire system.
Removing and replacing a power module in a C3200 involves the following tasks:

Casa Systems C3200 CMTS

Resolving C3200 hardware problems

Hardware and software problems can result in the same symptoms. Therefore, it is not
always possible to be certain if an actual hardware failure has occurred. Casa Systems
recommends that you open a case with Technical Support to troubleshoot the problem
with you.

In the United States: Tel: 978-699-3045

E-mail: support@casa-systems.com

The following symptoms usually indicate a hardware failure:

• System rebooting unexpectedly
• System unresponsive

Casa Systems C3200 CMTS

B-2 C3200 Hardware Installation Guide
Resolving C3200 hardware problems

• Line card status is "Not ready" or "Not provisioned"

• Line card reboots on its own
• Modems not registering or dropping off line on all ports on a line card
• Multiple line cards fail

System reboots unexpectedly

Assuming there are no power-related problems, a system that reboots on its own can
be due to a hardware failure or a software problem. If the console is attached, it might
be possible to collect information from the system. The output of the show tech and
show dmesg commands might provide information that will help identify the
problem. Contact Casa Technical Support. If a hardware problem exists, it is possible
that the SMM has failed.

Replace the SMM to see if this eliminates the unexpected reboots. If the problem
persists, the card cage may be a fault. See Chapter 4, “Maintaining the C3200
hardware” for information on replacing the SMM and the card cage, if necessary.

System unresponsive
Assuming there are no power-related problems, a system that is not responsive can be
due to a hardware failure or a software problem. If the console is attached, it might be
possible to collect information from the system. The output of the show tech and
show dmesg commands might provide information that will help identify the
problem. Contact Casa Technical Support. If a hardware problem exists, it is possible
that the SMM has failed.

Replace the SMM to see if this eliminates the problem. If the problem persists, the
card cage may be at fault. See Chapter 4, “Maintaining the C3200 hardware” for
information on replacing the SMM and the card cage, if necessary.

Line card in "Not ready" state

If a CMTS line card is in the “Not ready”state, it is most likely a hardware problem.
However, a failed process in the operating software will also result in the “Not Ready”
state. Casa Technical Support can determine if this is the actual problem.

If the line card is in the "Not ready" state, first ensure that the line card is properly
seated in the slot and that the screws are tight. Otherwise, a failure may be present at

C3200 troubleshooting B-3
Resolving C3200 hardware problems

the line card, card cage, or at the SMM. The first step should be to try to reboot the
line card unconditionally from diagnostic mode, as follows:

(diag)# reboot module x unconditional

If these actions do not resolve the problem, swap the line card. If the problem persists,
swap the card cage. If this still does not resolve the problem, then swap the SMM.

See Chapter 4, “Maintaining the C3200 hardware” for information on replacing the
SMM and the card cage, if necessary.

Line card in "Not provisioned" state

If a line card is in the “Not provisioned” state, it is most likely a hardware problem.
This can be due to the way the line card is seated in the slot, a line card failure, a card
cage failure, or an SMM failure. The first step should be to make sure the card is
properly seated in the chassis, the microswitch is engaged, and the thumbscrews are
tight.

Line card reboots unexpectedly

If a line card reboots on its own, this can be due to a hardware failure or a software
problem. If the console is attached, it might be possible to collect information from the
system. Contact Casa Technical Support. The output of the show tech and show
dmesg commands might provide information that will help identify the problem.

If it is a hardware problem, it is most likely the line card that has failed. Swap the line
card first. If the problem persists, then swap the card cage. If this still does not resolve
the problem, then swap the SMM.

See Chapter 4, “Maintaining the C3200 hardware” for information on replacing the
SMM and the card cage, if necessary.

Casa Systems C3200 CMTS

B-4 C3200 Hardware Installation Guide
Resolving C3200 hardware problems

No modems on a line card

If all the modems on a line card drop off or will not range, this can be due to a
hardware failure or a software problem. The output of the show tech and show dmesg
commands might provide information that will help identify the problem. If it is a
hardware problem, it is most likely a line card failure.

First, reboot the line card to see if the modems come back online. If this works, then
the problem is most likely a software or plant problem.

If the problem persists, swap the line card. If this does not resolve the problem, replace
the card cage. If this still does not resolve the problem, then swap the SMM.

See Chapter 4, “Maintaining the C3200 hardware” for information on replacing the
SMM and the card cage, if necessary.

Multiple line cards failing

If multiple line cards fail at the same time, this can be due to a hardware failure or a
software problem. The output of the show tech and show dmesg commands might
provide information that will help identify the problem. Contact Casa Technical
Support. If it is a hardware problem, it is most likely the card cage that has failed.

First, reboot the system to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, then the
problem is most likely a software problem. If the problem persists, swap the card cage.
If this does not resolve the problem, replace the SMM. If this still does not resolve the
problem, then swap the affected line cards.

See Chapter 4, “Maintaining the C3200 hardware” for information on replacing the
SMM, card cage, and line cards, if necessary.

Appendix C. C3200 memory

replacement

Appendix C describes how to re-seat or replace the C3200 DIMM on the SMM card.

It may be necessary to re-seat (or replace) the SMM DMM if the SMM should
suddenly malfunction. Malfunctions include processing errors, segmentation faults,
core dumps, and a failure of the system to boot up properly. After re-seating the DMM
and reinstalling/rebooting the SMM, check for proper system operation. If this does
not correct the problem, replace the DMM and perform another SMM reboot. If the
problem persists, replace the SMM.
