1.

Considering the issues on legal separation, annulment and divorce and rapid
cultural changes, would you still believe in long engagement and marriage? Why?
Despite the cases of legal separation, annulment divorce, and rapid cultural
changes, I still believe in long engagement and marriage because the essence of love
goes beyond misunderstanding, hatred, and pride. Love by itself, patches the wounds,
heal the hearts of the broken and accepts failures and imperfection. As stated in the
Bible, “Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers a multitude of sins.”
Negative issues regarding marriage does not hinder the existence of true love
among couples. Marriage takes patience, courage and acceptance for the rest of the lives
of the couple. It is sacred because it not only a union of two individuals but a union of
the couple and God himself.
2. Cite and critique at least five (5) changes in the Filipino families that are brought
about by the modernization and technological development.

 Filipino families are prone to broken marriages

Because of the influence of media, marriage loses its sacredness and
sanctity. Filipinos regularly watch annulled and divorce celebrity couples in
the television until Filipinos become accustomed to it and think it is normal
these days.
 Filipino families do not go to church together.
It’s a sad reality that Filipino families don’t exercise their devotion to
God together. In some cases, the parents to even encourage their children to
attend mass and church gatherings. I think its one of the reasons why their
teenage children prefer to go to church with their boyfriends or girlfriends.
 Filipino families have lesser time to bond with each other.
The responsibilities of the parents in their jobs prevents them from
spending enough time for their children for family gathering and small talks.
When they get home after work, they go straight to bed to rest.
 Filipino families often have separate lives inside their home.
Due to the constant exposure of the Filipino families to the use of
gadgets, family members often face each other in the sofa yet do not talk to
each other. Everyone is so busy holding their phones- texting, calling, and
posting pictures on social media. Filipino families prefer the virtual talks
rather than personal ones which is supposed to be more intimate and
valuable.
 Filipinos families are less disciplined.
Because of the publicity and criticism, a mother or any guardian gets
whenever he or she punishes a child for his or her wrongdoings, many
children stay uncorrected and unreprimanded. This gives the children the
idea that in this modern world they are given more power to reason out at
times they should be constructively punished.

3. Cite and discuss at least 5 Filipino cultural practices and values that are
considered good and at least 5 that are considered undesirable and must be
modified and eradicated.

5 Filipino cultural practices and values that are considered good:

 Fipinos have strong "Bayanihan Spirit”

Filipinos today value sense of brotherhood and social accountability.
We are open to help our neighbors in times they need assistance. When there
are also birthday and fiesta celebrations, neighbors come together to help
prepare the food and the venue.
 Filipinos take pride in their families
For every Filipino, family comes first. Whether the children are
successful or not, parents still take pride of them as they bear the family’s
name.
 Filipinos celebrate Fiestas religiously
Filipinos love to hold celebrations and fiestas. Every city, town, and
barangays spend a great amount of money just to throw fiesta. It is the time
family members come home and dine together with neighbors and visitors.

 Filipinos are always positive.

Whatever comes in life, Filipinos find time to smile. Many foreigners
admire how we remain resilient and positive all the time.

 Filipinos are hospitable

Filipinos are very welcoming even to the strangers. They receive their
visitors with open hearts. They always offer food that they can share while
exchanging conversations.

5 Filipino cultural practices that are considered undesirable and must be

modified and eradicated:

 Extravagant weddings

Filipinos nowadays have become so impractical in spending money during

wedding ceremonies. Couples prefer to spend any amount just to throw a decent yet
expensive wedding without thinking that future expenses may occur when they
start building families
 Filipino practice vote- buying

Vote-buying has become a culture in the Philippines. It is not an election if

the voters do not receive money from the candidates. Filipinos don’t value honesty
and truthfulness anymore.
 Some Filipinos are addicted to cock fighting
Filipinos still practice cockfighting which was brought by the Spaniards
during their invasion. Most Filipinos spend their daily earnings to take their bet
without thinking if they have food to carry with them when they get home.
 Filipinos don’t follow traffic rules
Most Filipinos park right in front of the sign that says ‘no parking’, loads
passenger where it says ‘no loading. The signages doesn’t mean anything to them. It
takes a traffic enforcer who should be present all the time in order for the Filipinos
to follow rules.
 Filipinos litters everywhere
Filipinos are not responsible of their trash. You can not find a street without
plastics, papers, and bottles on it. Filipinos are not committed to keep the
community clean.

4. Give suggestions how we can preserve our desirable Filipino Cultural

practices and values.

I think we can preserve our desirable Filipino cultural practices and values
by practicing it regularly in our daily lives. We should be firm in keeping the
tradition we acquired from the past generations and hold them dear to our heart.
We must learn to preserve our identity and refuse being too westernized and
modernized so that we don’t get confused on our own values and culture. Lastly, we
should not look down our roots instead we should be proud of it at all times under
any circumstances.
