LESSON PLAN IN SCIENCE VI

Content Standards: Learners demonstrate understanding of the different

characteristics of vertebrates and invertebrates.
Performance Standards: The learners should be able to make an inventory of
vertebrates and invertebrates that are commonly seen in the community.
Learning Competency: Determine the distinguishing characteristics of vertebrates
and invertebrates CODE: S6LT-IIe-f-3

I.OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson, the learners should be able to:
1. describe the characteristics of vertebrates and invertebrate.
2. list down characteristics of vertebrates and invertebrates.
3. show respect care to animals around us

II. CONTENT
A. Subject Matter: Describing the Characteristics of Vertebrates and Invertebrates
B. Science Concept: Vertebrates are animals with backbone. Invertebrates are
animals without backbone.
C. Values Integration: Respecting and caring the animals around us

IV. PROCEDURES
Before Lesson
1. Elicit: Enumerate ways showing healthful habits that promote proper
functioning of all the organs in the body.
2. Motivation:
Answer each riddle below. Choose the answer from the pictures.

I live in water and I have gills for breathing. My body is covered with scales. I have fins that
help me move and keep my balance. What am I?__________
I spend part of my life in water and part of my life on land. I have gills for breathing but they
will soon be replaced by a pair of lungs as I grow older. What am I? ________________.

I have lungs as the main organ of respiration and I have dry scaly skin. What am I?
______________
I have wings for flying. My skeleton is made up of strong but light bones. I have legs for
walking or running. What am I? ______________
I eat grass. I feed my young with milk. I have lungs for respiration and four legs for walking
and running. What am I? ____________

B. During Lesson:
3. Exploration
1. Divide the class into 5 groups.
2. Introduce Lesson: LM Activity 1A-D- “Properties of Materials in Terms
3. Check for the completeness of the materials brought by the pupils for the
activity. Make sure that the students were reminded to bring the
materials prior to the lesson or the teacher will be providing the
materials which the pupils will use for the activities.
4. The activity sheet must be distributed at the same time, manila paper and
marking pen should be prepared
5.Give other necessary instructions for doing the activity (i.e. allotted time for
the activity, the data table to be accomplished, group presenter/member’s
role/responsibility, precautionary measures to take, etc.).
6. Supervise the pupils while they are doing the activity

4. Explanation
1. Have the pupils present their outputs.
2. Discuss the activity and check the pupil’s responses to the given guide
questions.
3.Correct misconceptions if needed about the characteristics of vertebrates
and invertebrates

B. After the Lesson

5. Elaboration
a. Generalization: *How do you describe the vertebrates and invertebrates?
*What are the characteristics of vertebrates and invertebrates?
b. Valuing:
*Are vertebrates and invertebrates important to the environment? Why?
*How should we take care of them to maintain a balance ecosystem?

6. Evaluation:
Identify the animal as vertebrate and invertebrate. Write V if it is vertebrate and IV if
it is invertebrate inside the circle.

1. Beetle 4. Flies
2. Fish 3. Clams 5. Frog

7.Additional Activity
Construct a diagram showing the characteristics of vertebrates and invertebrates.

Learning Competency # 3: Determine the Distinguishing Characteristics of

Vertebrates and Invertebrates
Activity 1A: Characteristics of Vertebrates and Invertebrates
Objectives:
1. Describe the characteristics of vertebrates and invertebrates.
2. List down characteristics of vertebrates and invertebrates
3. Show respect and care to animals around us
What You Need:
* (Pictures of the animals below)
Dog Spider
Horse Earthworm
Carabao Snail
Goat Squid
*1pc. Manila paper
*1pc. pentel pen

What to do:
1. Examine the pictures of the animals under each group (vertebrate and
vertebrate).
2. Write the characteristics of each group of animals to complete the diagram
below.
3. Discuss your output in the class.
Groups of Animals

Vertebrates Invertebrates
