Students to volunteer at Commonwealth Games

Students at Leeds Metropolitan University are gearing up for the trip of a

lifetime as they prepare to volunteer at the Commonwealth Games in India.

Nine students, studying a range of courses including Physical Education,

Sport Development and Sport & Exercise Science, will travel to Delhi later this
month to be given a selection of roles at the Games including helping to
manage pre-Games training with the Commonwealth Games Organising
Committee.

Kate Wadkin an MSc Sport & Exercise Nutrition student spoke of her
excitement at the prospect of the trip: “It's such a great opportunity to
experience the Commonwealth Games in Delhi. This will be a unique chance
to observe a major championship both as a fan and to further my experience
in elite sport. I am also really looking forward to the cultural experience of
India as well.”

The volunteers will be joined by a number of Leeds Met students who will be
competing in the Commonwealth Games including diver and Sport & Exercise
Science student Sarah Barrow who will be part of England's diving squad.
National champion Sarah will compete in the individual 10m platform event as
well as teaming up with Tonia Couch for the 10m platform synchro event.

The divers will be joined by three Leeds Met student race-walkers who have
also been selected for the England Athletics team after impressive displays all
season. British number one Johanna Jackson will compete in the women's
20km walk, whilst Tom Bosworth and Alex Wright will compete in the men's
20km event.

Also heading to India is Carnegie Scholar James Campbell who will represent
Scotland in the javelin having recently added 4mto his Personal Best with a
throw of 80.38m, Matt Lambley who will be part of England's athletics squad
taking part in the Hammer and Cristen Callow who has been selected for
the Isle of Man's badminton squad.

The University volunteering programme for the visit to the Commonwealth

Games in Delhi is supported by funding from the Prime Minister's Initiative
(PMI2) student mobility programme which has made it possible for Leeds
Metropolitan students to take part in such a large international sporting
event.

In January 2008, Leeds Metropolitan became the official UK Education

Partner for the 2008 Commonwealth Youth Games in Pune and the 2010
Commonwealth Games in Delhi. The University successfully led a group of
student volunteers to the Youth Games in 2008 in India, giving them the
unique opportunity to experience and work in elite sport at an International
event.
