ME 305 – OPERATIONS RESEARCH

1 a. Formulate assignment as a mathematical model CO3

b. Solve the following travelling salesman problem CO3

A B C D E

A ∞ 17 16 18 14

B 17 ∞ 18 15 16

C 16 18 ∞ 19 17

D 18 15 19 ∞ 18

E 14 16 17 18 ∞

2. a. Explain Bellman’s principle of optimality with an example? CO3

b. Solve the following linear programming problems by dynamic programming. CO3
Maximize z = 3x1 + 5x2
Subject to the constraints
X1 < 4
X2 < 6
3x1+ 2x2 < 18 ; x1 , x2 > 0

3. a. Explain the dominance rules CO4

b. Using dominance principle to simplify the rectangular game with the following pay of
matrix, and solve it graphically:
Player B
I II III IV
I 18 4 6 4
Player A II 6 2 13 7
III 11 5 17 3
IV 7 6 12 2

4. a. Explain the characteristics of queuing theory CO4

b. Cars arrive at a fast food drive through window according to poisson’s distribution with
the average rate of 1 car every 1min. the time each customer spends ordering and getting
food is exponential with the average time of 3min. when a customer is served , the other
arrived customer has to stay in line looking for their turn. Compute i) Expected number of
cars in the line at any time. ii). The probability that line is empty iii). The average time the
car spends in the system
5. a. What are the advantages and disadvantages of simulation CO5
b. In a single server queuing system inter arrival time distribution and service time CO5
distribution is as follows :
Inter arrival time Frequency Service time Frequency
(Min) (Min)
0 12 4 8
3 18 6 20
6 50 8 36
9 74 10 88
12 32 12 48
15 14
Consider the following random numbers for inter arrival time
58, 47, 23, 69, 35, 55, 69, 90, 86, 74
The following random numbers for service time
87, 39, 28, 97, 69, 87, 52, 52, 15, 85
Simulate the system for 10 arrivals and find average waiting of the customers
6. a. What is decision tree and explain the expected value criterian for taking decisions under CO5
risk with suitable example CO5
b. Mr. Sinha has to decide whether or not to drill a well on his farm. In his village, only 40%
of the wells drilled were successful at 200 feet of depth. Some of the farmers who did not get
water at 200 feet drilled further up to 250 feet but only 20% struck water at 250 feet. Cost of
drillings is Rs. 50/- per foot. Mr. Sinha estimated that he would pay Rs. 18000/- during a 5-
year period in the present value terms, if he continues to buy water from the neighbor rather
than go for the well which would have life of 5 years. Mr. Sinha has three decisions to make:
(a) Should he drill up to 200 feet? (b) If no water is found at 200 feet, should he drill up to
250 feet? (c) Should he continue to buy water from his neighbor? Draw up an appropriate
decision tree and determine its optimal decision.
