Session 1

Reflection

I am not able to expound ideas about curriculum as of this time. I cannot remember

so much some topics related to it. Now, I am very thankful that this subject is being offered

in this institution. This would really help me activate my sense again on ideas and

knowledges about curriculum. Not only that, this subject is also in line with my major field

of specialization because it is entitled Language Curriculum Design, for sure it would also

contribute enhancing my knowledge on teaching English language in school.

In this session, our professor discussed the definition of curriculum. She provided

different views of how curriculum is defined. All of the definitions collectively pointing or

focusing on a single direction in which learner is the first thing to be considered. Their

learning outcome is the most essential part of designing curriculum. I think, it is because

the learner’s performance are the concrete evidence of the effectiveness of the designed

curriculum in the context of its implementation. Accordingly, in designing curriculum, we

must always consider the situation of the learners and how it tailor fit to theirselves and

to the context they are in.

Curriculum planning was also discussed. It is defined there that it is the advance

arrangement of learning opportunities for particular population of learners. On that

ground, planning should be done ahead of time and not exactly on time of implementation.

In connection to K to 12 or the current curriculum of the country, the teachers were

provided with a curriculum guide wherein the contents and the different objectives under

the objective domains were already stated and they should follow it as their basis of

teaching the lesson or making lesson plan. This idea is probably base on the word

“advance” in the definition of curriculum planning. Meaning to say, planning is very

essential, and it must be done before, not after and never on time of implementation in

order to have a meaningful learning outcomes and quality education.

The K to 12 Curriculum is well planned and it is designed considering the result of

various studies by the expert authorities before it was implemented. Planning is done

before taking it into effect after rigorous studies and analization as well as scrutinization

of possibilities that may occur during and after implementation.

As a senior high school teacher, I can say that K to 12 is effective because it is

relevant to the new trends and issues of the society. The integration of multimedia is

always included in the curriculum guide. Therefore, designing curriculum should be

based on the context of the learners in order to be meaningful and relevant to achieve

quality education.
