Indonesia is mix country with many tribes, culture and language which existed from Sabang
(Sumatera) to Merauke (Papua) and from Miangas Island to Rote Island. Despite the fact that
Indonesia had been colonized for more than 300 years by Dutch, this make the Indonesian had been
united all across the archipelago. Therefore, it is hard to find the main characteristic of the
Indonesian since they are united from all the differences. However, we still can see the
characteristics of Indonesian in general. The main characteristic of Indonesians are religious,
tolerant, friendly and hard worker.

We Indonesian are religious. Our country was divided into many different kingdoms, and
most of these kingdoms are Hindus and Buddhist before the colonialization began. Then, Muslim
came to our country becoming the major religion in our country. Almost all of Indonesian have
religion which we can see on the daily basis there are a lot of prayer activity based on religion itself.
A big religion event day also become the national agenda for all Indonesian even they are not from
the same religion.

Secondly, we Indonesian are tolerant. We respect all differences between all of Indonesian,
which based on the first characteristic that big religion day run peacefully. Moreover,we Indonesian
from different religion will help the other Religion day to succed the event. On the other hand, we
Indonesian are also respect other people’s culture. Tolerance has been taugh from our founding
father when we was a children which happen continuously.

The third characteristic is that the Indonesian are friendly. We Indonesian known worldwide
from our huge smiles to the new people. Even we never meet before, we will give our big smile to
anyone. We indonesian tend to hide the darkside of our feelings to always feel happy. Our founding
father taught us to not show our sadness to other people. This makes us the Indonesian easily get a
new friend even this “ our new friend “ come from another country.

Finally, We Indonesian are hard worker. Our founding father always give us advice to always
“work hard, pray hard” and serious when studying or working. This makes us the Indonesian looks
like hard worker to over come life problem.

In counclusion, we Indonesian are basically mix from many tribes, culture and language
which means there is a lot of characteristic of Indonesian. As a result, this is the main or major
characteristic of Indonesian which easily can be found, that is Religious, tolerant, friendly and hard
worker.
