Mang Inasal - Injap Sia

1. Based on the life circumstances presented in the story, discuss the personality traits
that account for the success of the entrepreneur. Support your answers.

Patient - Injap was determined to make things work. He wanted to wait a full 2 years
before moving on to bigger things. It was his first time in the food industry so he
patiently studied and observed on things he lacks and what he can do to improve.

Originality - Although it could be said that it is impossible to be original, Injap believed

in being creative on its own. He said that copying someone else’s concept is risky and
will eventually lead to nothing. He made a concept from an existing one an add a twist on
it. Imagine making your inasal experience to be cheap, tasteful and quick.

Passionate - Right from the start it was seen that Injap is passionate about creating
something that he believes in. He showed this by being persistent with his idea even
though a few questioned its success. But what he said at the end was something only a
passionate person would say. He mentioned that he is not yet sure if he’s going to make
another business but he is spending his time learning to gain more knowledge and
experience in the world of business. Open to new learnings and experiences. This is what
a passionate entrepreneur person is like.

Leadership - Injap and his siblings were trained to be a provider. He projected himself to
be a leader and it was seen with this business, he was able to provide employment for the
people and new business ventures for entrepreneurs like himself.

Integrity - It was important for Injap that right from the start there is integrity to what he
does. This was shown when he declined offers for franchises because he did not want to
involve anyone unless he was sure that the restaurant is not just a fad. He would rather
fall on his own than bring others with him just for the instant profit.
2. Discuss the entrepreneur’s life-path circumstances that led to the organizational
start-up.

After seeing a 250-meter-space in Iloilo, Injap Sia saw a vision of turning the
"inasal" casual dining experience into a fast-food operation. Before starting the business,
he laid his plans to his family. He consulted his parents and siblings to organize their
ideas since they established a business-oriented family. However, it was not an easy task.
He underwent some circumstances in terms of capital and operations. Since there was a
significant number of customers on their first day, he had to improve the operations so
that it would run smoothly to give these people satisfaction. Because of that, the owner
had to borrow P400,000 from his parents because their initial capital was not enough to
keep the operations going for another month. Sia, together with his family, worked hard
to establish their identity in the market; and just after eight months, he was able to return
the money he borrowed from his parents.

Even though Mang Inasal's operation was doing well, Injap Sia was skeptical of
expanding it. He disciplined himself by waiting for a full two-year cycle. He did not want
to be impulsive so that no one would be at stake. This young entrepreneur was able to
prove that his business is sustainable. Although it was successful, he faced certain
challenges that made him more determined. One of these is opening the first 200 stores.
He mentions that a business should be unique and always new so that a person can have a
good store network. As a result, Mang Inasal caught the attention of the Jollibee Food
Corporation that made Injap Sia one of the richest men in the country. As of this date,
there are 450 branches present nationwide. The owner did not let the circumstances to
hinder him. Instead, he used these things to grow.

3. Discuss how the entrepreneur went through the four stages of entrepreneurship.
● Identify the Opportunity
Injap Sia first saw an opportunity when he saw a 250-square meter space
which was left unoccupied for three years. The space was left vacant since
businessmen and other entrepreneurs saw it as far from ideal since it is far from
the usual way of most mall goers. After seeing the space, Injap immediately
bought it and started thinking of a business concept. The idea of creating Mang
Inasal came by when he realized that there is not a single fast food chain that sells
grilled chicken. Once the idea was there, he grabbed the opportunity to start a
food business that sells grilled chicken and also serving unlimited rice. In his
interview, Injap mentioned that he does not want to copy an existing concept
since it won’t lead him anywhere. Injap’s primary goal during that time was to
“convert inasal casual dining into a fast food operation.”
● Show Initiative
After creating a concept, Injap immediately started looking into
considerations his prospects, or customers in that matter. Creating an idea was not
enough to be an entrepreneur so he decided to ask the opinion of his family
members regarding his concept and immediately work on it for it to take its form.
He started conceptualizing for the name, store look, recipe, price range, target
market, workers, uniforms, and suppliers. He often consults his family regarding
the business and the taste of his product to ensure that his grilled chicken will be
accepted by the public. Additionally, during the interview Injap stated that being
employed was not one of his plans since he was raised and trained to create a
business and train people in order to provide jobs for them. Injap opened his first
Mang Inasal store with a capital of Php 2 million.

● Make Plans
Injap sia wanted to create a concept in which people in our country would
experience a new taste of fast food. Many entrepreneurs did not want to take the
space in iloilo for the first Mang Inasal, but Injap saw a chance. With that he tried
to bring the grilled chicken fast food to the city and because of its familiar taste, it
became a hit for many people in iloilo. He had a starting capital of 2 million
pesos, he would let his family sample the grilled chicken's recipe for dinner,
conceptualize what the store looks like, he was also patient because he wanted to
see if his business was going to succeed, waiting 2 years for Mang Inasal's
branches to open and as a franchise. His vision was met because of his clear plans
and proper allocation of Mobile Resources.

● Mobilize Resources
Injap Sia has a 2 million pesos starting capital. But that 2 million pesos
was not put to waste because he was able to have a place, reconstruct the place as
to how he imagines it will be, he did not even made fancy research that will cost
him more for the name of his business he just came to them. Although he needed
to borrow 400,000 pesos to his parents because of operating activities he was able
to give them back in 8 months, because his business became a hit. Customers
welcomed his business warmly and because of its affordable price he was able to
have a new market, the students. He allocated his resources properly and he did
not waste the 2 million pesos that he had. He had a small beginning capital
compared to other businesses but he was able to make his business big, and his
business did not only give him profits his business gave job opportunities for
everyone.
4. Give some important Contributions of entrepreneurs to society.
● Entrepreneurs importantly contribute to society through the virtue of resourcefulness that
guides them to devise their own in the verge of success for the common good.
Entrepreneurship is creative and forward thinking. Although businesses run on money,
entrepreneurs are often focused on a great deal more than their bottom line. They
contribute to society by leading the way and by finding innovative solutions to practical,
financial and social issues.

● Innovation
• Injap used Mang Inasal to create products and services that solve problems in
innovative ways. Because businesses must earn a profit to survive, entrepreneurs don't
have the luxury of being impractical. Their products and services must be functional, and
they must be designed to be cost-effective and to appeal to enough people to make it
viable to produce the products.

● Local Focus
• When injap started his successful business, he create jobs that contribute to widespread
prosperity. Unlike large companies, which often divert profits to centralized corporate
headquarters in distant cities, small businesses keep local dollars close to home. Their
successful businesses create jobs, and those jobs pay neighborhood workers, who in turn,
reinvest their paychecks in local economies.

● Free Thinking
• Injap think outside the box. This capacity for free thinking helps avert cultural
homogeneity, which might occur if everyone worked for the same large businesses and
who shared the same values. Corporate jobs tend to reward workers who put in long
hours and don't question company policies. Small businesses thrive on ongoing learning,
which requires fresh thinking, new ideas and unusual approaches to problem solving.
• As he experienced being immersed in day to day operations and hearing the needs and
concerns of workers, is more likely than a corporate executive to set up a work
environment that balances quality of life with the need to get the job done. In fact, Injap
is more than likely to understand that – without quality of life – workers may have
trouble getting the job done well.

● Growth of Entrepreneurship
• Entrepreneurship the advent of new venture particularly small ventures in order to
materialize the innovative ideas of the entrepreneurs. Thus, the growth or establishment
of Mang Inasal the specific contribution of entrepreneurship in every economy of the
world
● Creation of job opportunities
• Mang Inasal contributed a large share of new jobs. It provides entry-level jobs so
necessary fur training or gaining experience for unskilled workers. The small enterprises
are the only sector that generates a large portion of total employment every year.

● Impact on community development

• A community is better off if its employment base is diversified among many small
entrepreneurial firms. It promotes abundant retail facilities, a higher level of
homeownership, fewer slums, better, sanitation standards and higher expenditure on
education, recreation, and religious activities. Thus, what Injap started leads to more
stability and a higher quality of community life.

● Political and economic integration of outsiders

• Entrepreneurship is the most effective way of integrating those who feel disposed of
and alienated into the economy. Minorities, migrants, and women are safely integrated
into entrepreneurship that will help to develop a well-composed plural society.

● Spawns entrepreneurship
• Entrepreneurship is the nursing ground for new inexperienced adventurists. It is the
field where a person can start his/her idea of the venture, which may be ended up in a
giant enterprise. All the large industrial ventures started as a small entrepreneurial
enterprise. Therefore, entrepreneurship provides a wide spectrum of ventures and
entrepreneurs in every economy. The vast open arena of entrepreneurship thus acts as an
incubator to entrepreneurs.

● Enhances the standard of living

• The standard of living is a concept built on an increase in the amount of consumption of
a variety of goods and services over a particular period by a household. So it depends on
the availability of diversified products in the market. Entrepreneurship provides
enormous kinds of a product of various natures by their innovation. Besides, it increases
the income of the people who are employed in entrepreneurial enterprises. That also
capable employed persons to consume more goods and services. In effect,
entrepreneurship enhances the standard of living of the people of a country.

● Promotes research and development

• Entrepreneurship is innovation and hence the innovated ideas of goods and services
have to be tested by experimentation. Therefore, entrepreneurship provides funds for
research and development with universities and research institutions. This promotes the
general development, research, and development in the economy. Entrepreneurship is the
pioneering zeal that provides events in our civilization. We are indebted to it for having
prosperity in every arena of human life- economic, technological and cultural. The above
discussion, in a nutshell, enumerates that tremendous’ contributions of entrepreneurship.

5. Individually, what is your take-away lesson from the story as a future entrepreneur.
(Individual answers)

Angela Bautista
- One thing that I absolutely loved from what Injap said was about during the time that a
lot of people inquired about franchises he didn't immediately said yes and opted to wait it
out till he sees that the business is profitable and booming because of what it has to offer
and not because its on trend. He didn't want to involve other people unless it was
something good. It was important for him that the business is something that provides
employment, financial opportunities and good relationship instead of giving in to instant
profit. It is important for us to learn that fooling people would not be a great way for you
to boost your business. Your moral values should go above anything else.

This is an inspiring story but I wonder if I would do the same and be persistent with my
life choices. I already have something that I dream of establishing but some people
question it that it might just be a fad and eventually fade out in the future. As someone
who dreams for this, the story motivates me even more to fight for it and I'm eager to
produce a business that the people would appreciate and would want for decades.

Caith Caranto
- Long ago, I called my profession. I always wanted to be a CPA, as well as a
lawyer if time permits. But I wanted my own small business as well, so my
passion is in the franchise industry. With the success story of Injap, I could say he
changed my view of small business. I know that I should start studying and
preparing what business I should build as early as now-if I really want to make a
name in the business sector. His knowledge of the companies that imitate the
concept of other company really had a big impact on me.
Sure, a franchise company does work and generates revenue, but it's easier to
have your own business with your own ideas. He made me realize that the first
steps towards success are commitment and hard work. His initiative was truly
admirable and an inspiration for people like me who in the future wished to have
their own business.

- Injap Sia heavily impacted my view on entrepreneurs. It came to me that it is not
always originality equals success. What struck me was that Injap was willing to wait for
the gradual process to success instead of focusing on personal greed and worrying about
time. He changed the rule of what entrepreneurship should be by seeking into loopholes
that would definitely need more effort but ends up feasible and well-rounded. Today,
Mang Inasal is one of the most respected fast-food chains as it changed the game in terms
of inclusivity to all Filipinos who would appreciate the affordability of the various
products. Personally, I greatly aspire to create what’s authentically mine and passionately
work for what’s due. As a future entrepreneur, it is personally essential that I become an
achiever not only for myself, but for the greater common good.
Czar Luzano
- as an entrepreneur I personally view Injap as someone who against all odds made
it. Against tough competition he found success. I believe that the risk that Injap
took was great, he would look crazy to someone whom did not read his story
because he challenged and impacted the food industry in a great way. I myself
want to achieve more in life and Injap is a great inspiration in it. As someone who
wants to further his knowledge in the business and entrepreneurial world i would
love to have Injap’s braveness and innovation. And hoping that someday I may
innovate and be an entrepreneur who’s story should be read about also
Stephanie Padilla
- After reading Injap Sia’s story, I realized that Entrepreneurs create variations. They do
not simply adapt, but also innovate. It was a great idea to turn a casual dining food into
something a fast-food operation. Mang Inasal is accessible because it has several
branches; and affordable because a person will only be spending around Php 120 to have
an unlimited-rice meal which is a great deal for us Filipinos because rice is a part of us.
But beyond that, I admired the owner for being disciplined. After gaining a significant
amount of money did not change his work style, determination, and passion. He kept
reminding himself of his goal which many of us forget once we reached the things we
aim.

As a future entrepreneur, I want to have that same drive; I want to maintain the passion
regardless of the challenges. I will keep my determination intact because if I do that,
everything will pay off. I know that entering the business world will not be easy, but
keeping the right discipline will make it attainable.

Claire Regodon
- To be honest, I really don’t see myself as an entrepreneur but just a business woman
who dreams of creating an accounting firm. However, this view of mine not wanting to
venture in entrepreneurship somehow changed while I was reading the story of Injap Sia.
I did not know that creating Mang Inasal was really a hard challenge for Injap simply
because when I started to know it, it was already a hit to the mass and I was also thinking
that maybe the creator of it did not really had a hard time in conceptualizing and creating
the brand. I learned that the best way that can lead to success in life is to be imaginative,
patient, and disciplined. Being imaginative does not always mean that you’ll be thinking
about grand things perse. Injap’s imagination lead him to create a simple yet a service
and product that is loved by many. This is one of the traits that made Mang Inasal the
way it is today. Patience is also needed to succeed. Being successful is not a one night
thing. You need to be patient in order for you to achieve want you really want in life.
Being patient and imaginative is not enough in order to succeed we also need to be
disciplined. Discipline in a manner that we focus our energy on getting better and doing
our best in order to find success. These three things were the things that I have learned
while reading the success story of Injap Sia and how Mang Inasal came to be.
