According to TODARO development refers to as a multi-dimensional process

involving the reorganization and reorientation of the entire economic and social systems.
Thus, he emphasized that development is a broad term which should not be limited to
mean economic development, economic welfare or material wellbeing, development in
general includes improvements in economic, social and political aspects of whole society
like security, culture, social activities and political institutions. Just because it is multi-
dimensional it means that we should base it to other developing countries, which is a
misconception because we grow differently and each country is way different from one
other.

In Marcus’s era in late 90’s Philippines has reached its peak, in fact we are
considered as the model of development and is famous as one of Asia's industrial
powerhouse. Unfortunately, things didn’t go well with the country and up until now we are
struggling, so what’s the turning point of Philippines? Why did we become like this? I do
think that the turning point of the Philippines misery is taking the risk (Martial Law)
and not taking into account the future effects of such decisions. We are victims of
mistaken beliefs that at that time they think is right but now is not because in reality
greed has taken over people in making such harsh decisions. Marcus’s era is pretty
devastating in a sense that we now are financially struggling to cope up with other
developing countries because of the debts incurred during that time. Our debt is of
trillions and just recently it was confirmed that we have paid only the interest, which
is a joke. A very bad joke because truthfully Philippines won’t be able to pay that kind
of amount for centuries which is sad.

The Martial Law era has created big impacts as well as bad ones but the
greatest lesson we have learned in Marcus regime is that people should join forces
in order for us to attain the freedom or democracy that we wanted. Although that era
is pretty disastrous because we are in with the Martial Law which is for me the greatest
downfall anyone has ever encounter, it has given us Filipinos the drive to fight for the
things that we ought to be right. And that probably is the best take away from
everything that has happened.
Generally, Philippines is very poor in the eyes of others, even though we are
abundant with natural resources we have not really use them in a sense that it could
be beneficial for the country. Yes! Philippines development would take years, and
years of building and restructuring but I do think that we are on its ways to success.
Some may not see the light behind those criticisms but Philippines definitely is
developing in its own phase, were on the right path. The only thing that we need to
do in order to be of help in the country is let our voices be heard because only then
we can make a difference. Also government should be aware of the factors that
affects the development in the country, they should not let their desires over power
their responsibility to the people. The hierarchy between rich and poor is pretty
overwhelming and that should change too because in reality the rich people are
becoming rich while the poor people are becoming poorer and that’s should not be it.
Development should be equally distributed to people not just on the one side of it.
And government should also focus on the agriculture industry because reality what
so nots farmers are gravely mistreated which in fact they should be given more
attention because they are the source of our food.

Since Filipinos are known to be resilient, able to rise from difficulties we have
seen light amidst all darkness and challenges that have filled the country. We aren’t
just mediocre human being that would give up, yes! We are dying with debts in the
World Bank but I can definitely say that it motivates us to do better and be better. I
can see improvements within the country, it maybe small for some but I do think that
its better compared to having none. Filipinos nowadays are very creative, they
surprise us with things outside the box and I couldn’t be proud of. We don’t sulk in
the corner because we are poor in the eyes of other countries, we make a difference
in hope that even in our small little way we could be of help in the country. Thus I can
definitely attest that Philippines has indeed become a better country as well as its
people because we have gone through series of difficulties that no one on this world
could ever bring our spirits down.
