microns millimeters
Range and Definitions
• Lightweight aggregate – up to 2000 kg/m3
• Heavy weight aggregate – more than 3000 kg/m3
• Coarse aggregate – bigger than 4.75 mm
• Fine aggregate – smaller than 4.75 mm
• Fine natural aggregate (natural sand)
• Fine crushed aggregate (crushed sand)
• Dust – most passing 75 microns
• EN – Fines, particle size fraction of an aggregate which passes the 63 micronsns sieve
• Clay lumps
• Aggregate labelling – maximum and minimum sizes (e.g. 19/5)
• Maximum aggregate size
• Filler – material serving as mineral additive, obtained in crushing of limestone or dolomite rocks
• all smaller than 600 microns at least 65% smaller than 75 microns
• Flaky aggregate
• Elongated aggregate
• Single size aggregate
• Multi size aggregate
Grading – Coarse Aggregate: Table 2

No definition of all-in aggregate

EN Definition:
aggregate consisting of a mixture of coarse and fine aggregates
Grading – Fine Aggregate: Table 3, 2016 Revision
Natural Crushed
Grading – Fine Aggregate: Table 3, 2016 Revision
Natural Crushed

Filler definition somewhat different than EN:

IS - all smaller than 600 microns, 65% smaller than 75 microns
EN - all smaller than 2mm, at least 85% smaller than 125 microns, at least 70% smaller than 63 microns

5.5 Particle density and water absorption

When required the particle density and water absorption shall be
determined in accordance with EN 1097-6 and
the results declared on request stating the means of determination
and the calculations used.

Strategies for Using Dust/Fines as Fillers in Concrete
EN 12620 – Filler - material serving as mineral additive, obtained in crushing of limestone or dolomite rocks
all smaller than 600 microns at least 65% smaller than 75 microns

EN 206
3.1.2.1 addition: finely-divided-inorganic constituent used in concrete in order to improve certain properties or to
achieve special properties
3.1.2.2 type I addition: nearly inert addition
3.1.2.3 type II addition: pozzolanic or latent hydraulic addition

IS 118
Allows use of filler, no provisions for properties, except size
IS 466
Allows use of materials not covered by Israeli standard, if they comply with a foreign standard
EN 12620
Does not specify limiting values on properties, except definition of size
• the sand equivalent value (SE) when tested in accordance with EN 933-8 exceeds a specified lower limit;
• the methylene blue test (MB) when tested in accordance with EN 933-9 gives a value less than a particular
specified limit;
• equivalence of performance with known satisfactory aggregate is established or there is evidence of
satisfactory use with no experience of problems.
