OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE MANUAL FOR SLOPE

General Slope Maintenance

Category Description Details of Maintenance Works

A Routine Maintenance Routine Maintenance Inspection should includes:
Inspections, which can be
carried out adequately by a) Clearance of accumulated debris or soils from drainage channels.
any responsible person b) Repair of cracked or damaged drainage channels or pavement.
with no professional c) Repair of cracked or damaged rigid slope surface protection.
geotechnical knowledge d) Clear and unblock weepholes and outlet drain pipes.
(layman). e) Removal of any vegetation that can cause severe cracking of drainage channels.
f) Re-turfing on bare soil slope surface.
g) Removal of loose rock debris and undesirable vegetation from rock slopes or
around boulders.
h) Check for leakage of buried water-carrying services (e.g. water supply, sewerage
pipes).
i) Detect tell-tale signs such as creeping of slope, tension cracks, or cracking of
buildings near the slopes.

Routine Maintenance Inspection (RTI) by layman should be carried out at a minimum of

twice a year for slopes with negligible or low risk-to-life. For slopes with high risk –to-life,
more frequent RTI is required (once a month frequency). It is recommended that
inspection for all the drainage channels, clearance of any blockage by siltation or
vegetation growth and repair works for all cracked drains to be carried out before the
monsoon season. Inspection should also be carried out after every heavy rainstorm.

B Engineer Inspections for Engineer’s Inspection for Maintenance should be carried out to prevent slope failure
Maintenance, which when the Routine Maintenance Inspection by layman observed unusual ground
should be carried out by a movement such as widening cracks, settling ground, bulging, wall distortion or settlement
professionally-qualified of the crest platform. An Engineer’s Inspection for Maintenance should be conducted
and experienced once every five years or more as required based on the Routine Maintenance
geotechnical engineer. Inspections. More frequent inspections may be desirable for slopes and retaining walls in
the high risk-to-life category.

Reinforced Geogrid Slope Maintenance

The maintenance procedure outline in the General Slope Maintenance is applicable for the maintenance works for reinforced geogrid
slope.

Turf Maintenance:
Thick and tall turf could contribute to the slow surface water discharge which in turn could have caused significant surface water
infiltration especially during continuous heavy rainfall. In view of these consequences, it is recommended that the turf to be trimmed and
maintained at 100m thick for reinforced geogrid slope.

In the event of slope failures, the following rectification methods are proposed.

Type of Failure Probable Cause of Failure Proposed Rectification Works

Shallow slip failure - Continuous heavy rainfall Slope Rectification:
which resulted in surface slips - Remove failed materials.
of the slopes and caused - Fill with 25mm size Gravel.
severe deterioration of the - Lay geotextile separator Polyfelt TS30.
reinforced slope surface. - Lay 300mm thick compacted suitable fill.
- Apply Polymat with close turfing at the slope surface.

A drawing showing the cross-section of the slope and the proposed

rectification measures is attached as Figure 1.

The above method of rectification for the reinforced geogrid slope

should be verified by professionally-qualified and experienced
geotechnical engineer based on the Engineer’s inspection.

Major Slip Failure - Continuous heavy rainfall The method of rectification for the reinforced geogrid slope should be
resulting in high volume of designed by professionally-qualified and experienced geotechnical
surface water infiltration into engineer based on the Engineer’s inspection.
the slope surface and saturate
the soil thereby reducing the
shear strength of the soil.
