AKNOWLEDGMENT

Foremost among the many people to whom the researcher is deeply

indebted are:

The almighty God, the creator, the spring of their lives and the prim-mover,

for without HIM to initiate anything in this world, none of these could have been

possible;

To her parents, Celsus Sr. and Conversion whose unconditional loved

have made her accept her otherwise flawed self.

To her brothers and sisters, Manong Dodgie, Manoy Jun-jun, Ate Kim,

Jerome and Joy. Life with these clamorous but otherwise adorable siblings have

been so very much worth living;

To her cousins Sole S. Segovia and late Ma. Luthie S. Nierra for their

moral support and willing to extend valuable help and time.

To her close friend Ruth “ai-ai” Pulod Albarico, for her undying and

valuable support to make this study possible,

Dr. Matias A. Bentor Jr., Naval State University OIC President, for him

never-ending encouragement to all graduate school students to finish their

postgraduate degree.

Dr. Susan S. Bentor, Dean Graduate School and her adviser for her

constant consideration and for her advice to improve this study.

ABSTRACT

DUALLO, JESSICA A., Naval State University, Naval, Biliran, Philippines,

February 2017, “ASSESSMENT OF CHEMISTRY INSTRUCTION AT VISAYAS
STATE UNIVERSITY, VILLABA CAMPUS”A Masteral Thesis.

Adviser: DR. SUSAN S. BENTOR

The study aimed to assess the chemistry instruction at Visayas State

University Villaba Campus, the outcome of which will serve as the basis for crafting

a development plan for chemistry instruction to improve the academic performance

of the students.

The data of this study were taken from the teachers teaching chemistry and

the first year college students in the said university using survey questionnaire.

The complete names were gathered from the Human Resources Management

Office or the Dean’s Office in the Visayas State University- Villaba.

Utilizing the descriptive survey method, this study determined the socio-

demographic profile of the teacher respondents; teaching competencies;

adequacy and effectiveness of the teaching strategies employed by the teacher in

teaching chemistry; adequacy of the instructional facilities materials used by the

teacher’s; academic performance of the first year college students in chemistry;

the significant relationship between teacher respondents socio-demographic

profile, teaching competencies, adequacy and effectiveness of the teaching

strategies, adequacy of the instructional facilities and materials employed and the

academic performance of the first year college students in chemistry.

x
Based on the findings of this study, it was found out that the chemistry

instruction at the Visayas State University Villaba Campus was competent in terms

of the teaching competencies of the subject matter, teaching skill, classroom

management and evaluation skills, and very competent with regard to the

professional ethics and personal qualities. Most of the teacher respondents were

at the middle age, female dominated, married with masteral units, most of them

specialized chemistry with a present position of instructor and having a length of

11-15 years teaching experience and most of them had attended local, regional

and national training. The adequacy and effectiveness of the teaching strategies

were moderately adequate and moderately effective and the instructional facilities

and materials were inadequate and ineffective. Majority of the student’s academic

performance in chemistry had a rating of 82-87 (2.0-2.25)

As regards to the significant relationship between the profile of the teacher

respondents and the academic performance of the students the hypothesis is

rejected. However there was a significant difference between the teaching

competencies and the academic performance of the students but there was no

significant difference between the adequacy and effectiveness of teaching

strategies and the academic performance of the students.

In the heights of the findings and conclusion of the study the researcher

recommended that the VSU-VC should craft and implement a development plan

to enhance teaching competencies, professional growth, and chemistry instruction

and upgrade instructional facilities and materials that would improve the academic

performance of the students in chemistry.
