CULTURAL AFFILIATION AND ITS INFLUENCE

ON STUDENT PERFORMANCE

ABSTRACT

There is an essential connection between student performance and culture. The

educational context in which the students are expected to be successful,

operates on the norms of the dominant cultures, which more often than not differ

from the culture that students experience in school. Education is a cultural

process. Schools are primarily vehicle for transmitting knowledge and skills as

well as values, practices and a culture of a society.

Thus, this study aims to identify the relationship of cultural affiliation and its

impact on student performance. In this regard, the target groups are the Grade

10 students of St. Mary’s Academy of Guiuan who have shared their views and

perceptions about the topic.

This correlational study involved 127 students of St. Mary’s Academy of Guiuan.

To determine the respondents profile on the preference about cultural affiliation

and student performance, each respondent was evaluated through survey

questionnaire which was designed to collect evidences from the respondent’s

perception.

The data obatined from the survey questionnaire were consolidated, organized

and tabulated in distribution tables and graphs. They were analyzed and

interpreted utilizing suitable statistical tools. Simple frequency counts, percentage

x

and rating scales were employed to present the profile of the respondents in

terms of their perception about cultural affiliation and student performance.

The overall perception on cultural affiliation and student performance is coomon

to all respondents. They share the same view that cultural affiliation has a great

impact on how they perform in different schhol activities.

The computed r value was 0.86 which was interpreted as strong relationship.

This resulted in a p-value of <0.0001 which is considered to be statistically

significant at 0.05 level. Therefore, the research hypothesis was accepted.

In the light of essential finding of the study, it is evident that the students of St.

Mary’s Academy of Guiuan agreed that cultural affiliation really contribute to

student performance.

Based on the results of the study, the following recommendations were

established: Teachers should take into consideration the different types of

cultures his/her students have; administrators should be guided on what kind of

rules to observed ralating to what kinds of culture the students have; and future

researchers could use this study of as their reference in conducting similar study

using other variables that are believed to influence student performance.
