Accomplishment you are most proud of: It is simply the fact
I have been able to live the American dream. I have a great
family (wife Catherine, son Zach and daughter Rachel) and
through opportunities, luck and diligence, I have been able to
accomplish more than I ever dreamed.
You’d never guess that I … come from a family of eight and
grew up on a small farm in a town of less than 300 people.
Why I’m proud to be affiliated with the Joe Machens
Dealerships: My parents taught me at a young age that if you
treat other people the way you want to be treated, you will do
well. I was fortunate to find an organization where taking care
of the customer and doing the right thing is the No. 1 goal.
Mr. Drewing has created an atmosphere of high expectations
and gives every employee the opportunity to reach them. I am

2011 Cadillac CTS will be at
the top of a lot of Christmas
lists this year.
Cadillac combines luxurious comfort
and aggressive performance in a sports
sedan that appeals to auto lovers of all
ages. The car’s siren song begins with the
styling, which is sleek yet substantial and
compares favorably to high-end European
sedans. It possesses a sort of quiet grace that
commands attention without resorting to
frivolous flash.

The seats are a road-tripper’s dream
come true — infinitely adjustable, roomy
and firm. And backseat passengers won’t
feel as if they’re being punished; there’s
plenty of elbow room for two. When the
family’s all buckled in (and protected by a
state-of-the-art safety system that includes
airbags, traction control, OnStar automatic
crash response and a long list of additional
safety features), they’ll enjoy the long ride
over the river and through the woods to
Grandma’s house for the holidays. The
terrain won’t matter in this car because

Winterize Your Car
I
t’s the sleigh and not your car that is
supposed to dash through the snow, but
if vehicles are not adequately prepared
for winter, driving can be more stressful
and treacherous. Many motorists seem
willing to take that chance, according to
figures from the Car Care Council, which
reports that 70 percent of drivers don’t
winterize their vehicles.
“Everyone is pressed for time, especially
around the holidays, and the vehicle often
gets neglected … until something happens,”
says the council’s Executive Director Rich
White. “Winterizing is a proactive step that
helps ensure safe and reliable driving during
one of the busiest times of the year.”
Among the safety items to check before
winter sets in are the brakes, especially if it
has been a while since your last routine brake
inspection. Brakes are a normal wear item for
any car and eventually need to be replaced
for both performance and safety reasons.
Drivers should also monitor tire pressure.

When temperatures drop, tires lose pressure,
affecting ride, handling, traction and safety.
It’s also very important to check the
antifreeze. The owner’s manual will have
usage specifications but the mixture of
antifreeze (coolant) and water inside your
vehicle’s radiator is typically 50:50. When
properly mixed, antifreeze and water provide
excellent anti-freeze, anti-boil and anti-
corrosive properties. Do not add 100 percent
antifreeze to the radiator, however; at full
strength, antifreeze actually has a lower freeze
point than when mixed with water.
For motor oil, the council recommends
changing to low-viscosity oil in winter, as
it will flow more easily between moving
parts when cold. Drivers in subzero driving
temperatures should drop their oil weight
from 10W-30 to 5W-30 because thickened
oil can make it hard to start the car.
Cold temperatures also reduce a vehicle
battery’s cranking power, making it critical
to keep the connections clean, tight and

corrosion-free. Unfortunately, batteries don’t
always give signs before they fail completely.
If your vehicle’s battery is 3 years old or
older, it’s wise to replace it. Make sure the
new one has adequate capacity for your exact
make and model.
Cold weather can shorten the life of
windshield wipers by making the rubber
hard and brittle, and increasing the potential
for cracks. Cracked or torn wiper blades, or
blades that chatter, streak and don’t properly
clean your windshield should be changed.
Some manufacturers offer special winter
blades with a rubber boot covering the arm
assembly to keep snow and ice out. When
changing the blades, have the windshield
wiper system nozzles cleaned and adjusted if
necessary, and check the windshield washer
reservoir in case it needs fluid.
Lastly, don’t forget the emergency kit
that should include an ice scraper, flashlight,
blankets, extra clothes, bottled water, snacks,
gloves, flares, a first-aid kit.

he Lincoln Complimentary Maintenance Program has
become a permanent staple for all new Lincoln customers
with the beginning of the 2011 model year. First announced
last summer as a promotion for select model year 2010
Lincoln lease and retail customers, the program became permanent for
all model year 2011 vehicles in fall 2010.
The program is designed to enhance the four-year, 50,000-mile
bumper-to-bumper manufacturer’s warranty and is fully transferable
to a second owner. Furthermore, the program includes coverage for
oil and filter changes, tire rotations and multipoint inspections for up
to eight service visits.
• Fuel economy leadership with each new vehicle — leading to Lincoln
emerging as the most fuel-efficient luxury lineup on the market
• More useful technology and features — with a special focus on
comfort and convenience. New advanced features include fully
retractable glass roofs; adaptive, computer-controlled suspensions;
electronic, push-button gear selectors; active noise control and
exclusive MyLincoln Touch driver connect technology
Lincoln already is gaining traction. The J.D. Power and Associates
2010 Initial Quality Study showed Lincoln had moved into the top 10
among all automotive brands in the United States. Lincoln was in the
eighth spot, up from the 26th position a year ago — the largest jump
of any brand.

2011 Ford Explorer More Adaptable Than Ever

Whether hauling mountain bikes
through mud ruts, or groceries and kids
through rush hour traffic, the new 2011
Ford Explorer will adapt to peoples’ lives
more than ever — building on the capability,
flexibility and utility that made it America’s
favorite SUV for two decades.
The redesigned Explorer, which arrives
later this year, will deliver more adaptability
than ever before, from adjustable creature
comforts like a four-way head restraint
to responsive driver-assist and safety
technologies such as a terrain-management
system and Curve Control.
“The Explorer has always been about
maximum adaptability, but it’s not just about
off-road capability, flexible cargo space and
seating configurations anymore,” says Amy
Marentic, group marketing manager for Ford
cars and CUVs. “With the new Explorer,
we’ve redefined what adaptability means by
expanding the user’s ability to adjust vehicle
features and functions. At the same time we
are offering innovative technologies that can
allow the Explorer to automatically adjust to
driving conditions if needed.”
One of the new Explorer’s flexible
features is the four-way head restraint
designed to provide protection for occupants
with more adjustable comfort and increased
flexibility than industry-standard two-way
restraints. The four-way system moves up
and down, as well as forward and backward,
for 12 positions to increase occupant
comfort while helping to provide occupant
injury protection in rear impacts.
Two other Explorer features are the
adjustable brake and accelerator pedals and
the tilt/telescoping steering wheel that allow
drivers of different statures to position these
controls at a comfortable distance closer or
farther away from them.
While the new Explorer’s driver and
passengers can easily adjust interior features
to their liking, the Explorer seamlessly
adjusts to external driving conditions. Two
new-for-2011 technologies that perform in
this adaptable manner are Curve Control
and a terrain-management system.
Curve Control, which makes its debut on
the Explorer, senses when a driver is taking
a curve too quickly and responds by rapidly
reducing engine torque and applying four-
wheel braking, slowing the vehicle by up to
10 mph in about one second. The system
can be useful when drivers are entering or
exiting freeway on-  or off-ramps with too
much speed.
The new Explorer offers Ford’s first
intelligent four-wheel-drive control that
optimizes vehicle capability by integrating
powertrain and braking controls to provide
appropriate traction for any driving
conditions. Terrain management is activated
by a console-mounted, switchable knob,
enabling four-wheel-drive control through a
choice of settings that eliminates guesswork
with simple icons that represent the climate
or surface situation drivers may encounter.
