Problem Statement

Out of three students and five hats, three light and two dark, how is one student positive
of their hat color if they can only see the the color of the two hats the other student are wearing?

Process

I approached this problem by analyzing the different combinations of hats the three
students could have worn. From all those combinations there was only one combination where
the one student would know exactly what color hat they were wearing.

*In the diagram I left out multiples of the same combination

Solution/Reflection

The student’s hat must have been light, and the other two were dark. This can be
concluded because if the two students who weren’t guessing both had dark hats then that would
eliminate all the dark hats and leave the one student guessing with only one hat color option. It
would also make the other two students when guessing unsure of their hat color because they
would both see a dark hat and a light hat, leaving one dark option and two light options.

Extension Question

What is the likeliness that the one student would correctly guess their hat color without looking
at the other two student’s hats?
