The words as, since and because can be used
to refer to the reason for something. So is used
to refer to the result.
We decided to go out because / since /
as it was a pleasant evening.
It was a pleasant evening, so we
decided to go out.
For example and such as are used to give
examples. Put a comma after ‘for example’

Children should avoid eating junk


food such as burgers and chips.
Children should eat less junk food. For
example, they should avoid eating
burgers and chips.
Instead of (a preposition) and instead (an
adverb), means in place of or alternative

We can use instead at the beginning or the end


of a clause
Holidays in Italy are too expensive so we're
going to Greece instead.
Holidays in Italy are too expensive so
instead we're going to Greece .
Instead of (a preposition) and instead (an
adverb), means in place of or alternative
instead of + noun
I'll have tea instead of coffee.
instead of + a name
I'll go instead of Jack.
instead of + pronoun you, us, etc.
I'll go instead of him.
instead of + verb + -ing.
He went alone instead of waiting for me.
According to is used to say where information
or ideas have come from

 According to Suleiman, the fire started in the


kitchen.
 According to Einstein, gravity results from
how mass warps space and time.
However, yet, although / though, even
though, and while are used to show contrast

Compare these sentences:
I was very excited to be invited to lunch. However, I
had already made plans

I was very excited to be invited to lunch. I had already


made plans, however.

I was very excited to be invited to lunch. I, however,


had already made plans.
Yet has a similar meaning to although or but. It cannot come
at the beginning of the sentence.

Sara is good at English, yet her favorite subject is


Science.

The weather was cold and wet, yet we had a great


time.
Although is followed by two contrasting ideas. Though is
another variation of although.

Although/Though Sara’s favorite subject is


Science, she is good at English.

Sara is good at English, although/though her


favorite subject is Science.
Use while to show contrast.
Compare these sentences:

I prefer chocolate cake, while my sister prefers


halwa.

While my sister prefers halwa, I prefer


chocolate cake.
Even though is a slightly stronger form of 'although'.
Compare these sentences:

Even though Dawood had enough money, he


refused to buy a new car.

Dawood refused to buy a new car, even


though he had enough money.
As well, too, and also are used to show similarity

Too and as well are used at the end of sentence. Also usually
goes before the verb or adjective, or after and auxiliary or
modal.
James plays soccer. Greg plays soccer, too.
James plays soccer. Greg plays soccer, as
well.
James plays soccer. Greg also plays soccer.
